**Number Functions:**
- `number()`, `sum()`, `floor()`, `ceiling()`, `round()`
### Known Limitations

- **`id()`** — Not supported. Returns an error. RustyXML disables DTD processing for security (XXE prevention), and `id()` requires DTD-declared ID attributes to function.
- **`$variable`** — Variable references are not supported. Returns an error. Variables are primarily an XSLT feature; standalone XPath evaluation does not define a variable binding mechanism.
- **Namespace axis** — Returns empty. The namespace axis requires namespace node types not present in the node model. Use `namespace-uri()` for namespace information.

# XPath 1.0: Namespace Support & Stub Resolution

**Date:** 2026-02-16
**Issue:** https://github.com/jeffhuen/RustyXML/issues/2
**Status:** Approved

## Problem

Several XPath 1.0 functions and features return stub values instead of correct results. The README claims "Full XPath 1.0" but `namespace-uri()`, `id()`, `lang()`, `$variable`, the namespace axis, and QName node test matching are all unimplemented.

## Decisions

| Item | Decision | Rationale |
|------|----------|-----------|
| `namespace-uri()` | Implement | DOM already stores namespace URIs |
| `lang()` | Implement | Ancestor walk for `xml:lang` attribute |
| `id()` | Explicit error | DTD processing disabled for XXE security |
| `$variable` | Explicit error | XSLT feature, not relevant for standalone XPath |
| Namespace axis | Implement via ancestor walk | Rarely used but correct |
| QName node tests | Implement | Required for namespace-aware queries |
| Index support | DOM-only for now | Keep index compact, defer to future work |

## Design

### 1. DocumentAccess Trait

Add 2 new required methods (no defaults — compiler catches missing impls):

```rust
fn node_namespace_uri(&self, id: NodeId) -> Option<&str>;
fn node_prefix(&self, id: NodeId) -> Option<&str>;
```

- `XmlDocument`: looks up `namespace_id`/`prefix_id` via string pool
- `IndexedDocumentView`: returns `None` (deferred)

### 2. Functions

**`namespace-uri(node?)`** — calls `doc.node_namespace_uri()`, returns URI or `""`.

**`lang(string)`** — walks ancestors checking `xml:lang` attribute. Case-insensitive subtag prefix matching per XPath 1.0 spec: `lang("en")` matches `xml:lang="en-US"`.

**`id()`** — returns `Err("id() is not supported: DTD processing is disabled for security (XXE prevention)")`.

### 3. Variable References

**`$variable`** — returns `Err("Variable references ($name) are not supported")`.

### 4. Namespace Axis

Walk ancestors collecting `xmlns:*` attributes. Closest ancestor wins for each prefix (shadowing). Always include the implicit `xml` -> `http://www.w3.org/XML/1998/xml` binding. Returns synthetic namespace nodes per XPath 1.0 data model.

### 5. QName Node Test Matching

- `prefix:local` — resolve prefix to namespace URI via `xmlns:prefix` ancestor walk, match both URI and local name
- `prefix:*` — resolve prefix to namespace URI, match all elements with that namespace URI

### 6. README

Document `id()` and `$variable` as known limitations with rationale. Keep "Full XPath 1.0" with footnoted exceptions.

## Files

| File | Change |
|------|--------|
| `dom/mod.rs` | Add 2 trait methods |
| `dom/document.rs` | Implement for `XmlDocument` |
| `index/view.rs` | Implement (returns `None`) |
| `xpath/functions.rs` | `namespace-uri`, `lang`, `id` |
| `xpath/eval.rs` | `$variable` error |
| `xpath/axes.rs` | Namespace axis, QName matching, namespace wildcard matching |
| `README.md` | Document limitations |
| Tests | One test per feature |

# XPath Namespace Support & Stub Resolution — Implementation Plan

> **For Claude:** REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: Use superpowers:executing-plans to implement this plan task-by-task.

**Goal:** Implement namespace-uri(), lang(), namespace axis, and QName node test matching; return explicit errors for id() and $variable; update README.

**Architecture:** Add `node_namespace_uri()` and `node_prefix()` to the `DocumentAccess` trait. `XmlDocument` (test-only DOM) implements via string pool lookups on `namespace_id`/`prefix_id`. `IndexedDocumentView` returns `None` (deferred). XPath functions, axes, and node tests wire into the new trait methods.

**Tech Stack:** Rust, XPath 1.0 spec, `DocumentAccess` trait (static dispatch)

**Design doc:** `docs/plans/2026-02-16-xpath-namespace-and-stubs-design.md`

---

### Task 1: Add namespace methods to DocumentAccess trait

**Files:**
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/dom/mod.rs:21-80` (DocumentAccess trait)
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/dom/document.rs:506-565` (XmlDocument impl)
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/index/view.rs:97-295` (IndexedDocumentView impl)

**Step 1: Add trait methods**

In `dom/mod.rs`, add two new required methods to the `DocumentAccess` trait after `node_local_name`:

```rust
/// Get namespace URI of a node (None if unavailable or no namespace)
fn node_namespace_uri(&self, id: NodeId) -> Option<&str>;
/// Get namespace prefix of a node (None if unavailable or no prefix)
fn node_prefix(&self, id: NodeId) -> Option<&str>;
```

**Step 2: Implement for XmlDocument**

In `dom/document.rs`, add to the `impl DocumentAccess for XmlDocument` block:

```rust
fn node_namespace_uri(&self, id: NodeId) -> Option<&str> {
 let node = self.get_node(id)?;
 if node.namespace_id == 0 {
 return None;
 }
 self.strings.get_str_with_input(node.namespace_id, self.input)
}
fn node_prefix(&self, id: NodeId) -> Option<&str> {
 let node = self.get_node(id)?;
 if node.prefix_id == 0 {
 return None;
 }
 self.strings.get_str_with_input(node.prefix_id, self.input)
}
```

**Step 3: Implement for IndexedDocumentView**

In `index/view.rs`, add to the `impl DocumentAccess for IndexedDocumentView` block:

```rust
fn node_namespace_uri(&self, _id: NodeId) -> Option<&str> {
 // Namespace resolution deferred for indexed documents
 None
}
fn node_prefix(&self, _id: NodeId) -> Option<&str> {
 // Prefix resolution deferred for indexed documents
 None
}
```

**Step 4: Build to verify compilation**

Run: `cargo build 2>&1`
Expected: Compiles successfully with no errors.

**Step 5: Commit**

```bash
git add native/rustyxml/src/dom/mod.rs native/rustyxml/src/dom/document.rs native/rustyxml/src/index/view.rs
git commit -m "Add node_namespace_uri and node_prefix to DocumentAccess trait"
```

---

### Task 2: Implement namespace-uri() function

**Files:**
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/xpath/functions.rs:104-111` (fn_namespace_uri)

**Step 1: Write failing test**

Add to `functions.rs` tests module:

```rust
#[test]
fn namespace_uri_returns_uri_for_prefixed_element() {
 let doc = XmlDocument::parse(b"");
 let root = doc.root_element_id().unwrap();
 let children: Vec<_> = doc.children_vec(root);
 let child = children[0];
 let result = fn_namespace_uri(vec![XPathValue::NodeSet(vec![child])], &doc, child).unwrap();
 assert_eq!(result.to_string_value(), "http://example.com");
}
```

**Step 2: Run test to verify it fails**

Run: `cargo test namespace_uri_returns_uri -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: FAIL — currently returns empty string.

**Step 3: Implement namespace-uri()**

Replace `fn_namespace_uri` in `functions.rs:104-111` with:

```rust
fn fn_namespace_uri(
 args: Vec,
 doc: &D,
 context: NodeId,
) -> Result {
 let node = if args.is_empty() {
 context
 } else {
 match &args[0] {
 XPathValue::NodeSet(nodes) if !nodes.is_empty() => nodes[0],
 XPathValue::NodeSet(_) => return Ok(XPathValue::String(String::new())),
 _ => return Err("namespace-uri() argument must be a node-set".to_string()),
 }
 };
 let uri = doc.node_namespace_uri(node).unwrap_or("");
 Ok(XPathValue::String(uri.to_string()))
}
```

**Step 4: Run test to verify it passes**

Run: `cargo test namespace_uri_returns_uri -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: PASS

**Step 5: Commit**

```bash
git add native/rustyxml/src/xpath/functions.rs
git commit -m "Implement namespace-uri() XPath function"
```

---

### Task 3: Implement lang() function

**Files:**
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/xpath/functions.rs:60,311-314` (fn_lang + call site)

**Step 1: Write failing test**

Add to `functions.rs` tests module:

```rust
#[test]
fn lang_matches_xml_lang_attribute() {
 let doc = XmlDocument::parse(b"");
 let root = doc.root_element_id().unwrap();
 let children: Vec<_> = doc.children_vec(root);
 let child = children[0];
 // lang("en") on child should match parent's xml:lang="en"
 let result = call("lang", vec![XPathValue::String("en".to_string())], &doc, child, 1, 1).unwrap();
 assert!(result.to_boolean(), "lang('en') should match xml:lang='en' on ancestor");
}
#[test]
fn lang_matches_subtag_prefix() {
 let doc = XmlDocument::parse(b"");
 let root = doc.root_element_id().unwrap();
 let children: Vec<_> = doc.children_vec(root);
 let child = children[0];
 // lang("en") should match xml:lang="en-US" (subtag prefix)
 let result = call("lang", vec![XPathValue::String("en".to_string())], &doc, child, 1, 1).unwrap();
 assert!(result.to_boolean(), "lang('en') should match xml:lang='en-US'");
}
```

**Step 2: Run tests to verify they fail**

Run: `cargo test lang_matches -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: FAIL — currently returns false.

**Step 3: Implement lang()**

Replace `fn_lang` at `functions.rs:311-314` with:

```rust
fn fn_lang(args: Vec, doc: &D, context: NodeId) -> Result {
 if args.len() != 1 {
 return Err("lang() requires exactly 1 argument".to_string());
 }
 let target_lang = args[0].to_string_value().to_lowercase();
 // Walk up ancestor chain looking for xml:lang attribute
 let mut node = context;
 loop {
 if let Some(lang_val) = doc.get_attribute(node, "xml:lang") {
 let lang_lower = lang_val.to_lowercase();
 // Exact match or subtag prefix match (e.g., "en" matches "en-US")
 if lang_lower == target_lang
 || (lang_lower.starts_with(&target_lang)
 && lang_lower.as_bytes().get(target_lang.len()) == Some(&b'-'))
 {
 return Ok(XPathValue::Boolean(true));
 }
 return Ok(XPathValue::Boolean(false));
 }
 match doc.parent_of(node) {
 Some(parent) => node = parent,
 None => break,
 }
 }
 Ok(XPathValue::Boolean(false))
}
```

Update the call site at line 60 to pass `doc` and `context`:

```rust
"lang" => fn_lang(args, doc, context),
```

**Step 4: Run tests to verify they pass**

Run: `cargo test lang_matches -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: PASS

**Step 5: Commit**

```bash
git add native/rustyxml/src/xpath/functions.rs
git commit -m "Implement lang() XPath function with ancestor xml:lang lookup"
```

---

### Task 4: Return explicit errors for id() and $variable

**Files:**
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/xpath/functions.rs:132-135` (fn_id)
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/xpath/eval.rs:254-257` (Op::Variable)

**Step 1: Write failing tests**

Add to `functions.rs` tests:

```rust
#[test]
fn id_returns_explicit_error() {
 let result = fn_id(vec![XPathValue::String("foo".to_string())]);
 assert!(result.is_err());
 assert!(result.unwrap_err().contains("not supported"));
}
```

Add to `eval.rs` tests:

```rust
#[test]
fn variable_reference_returns_error() {
 let doc = XmlDocument::parse(b"");
 let result = evaluate(&doc, "$myvar");
 assert!(result.is_err());
 assert!(result.unwrap_err().contains("not supported"));
}
```

**Step 2: Run tests to verify they fail**

Run: `cargo test id_returns_explicit_error -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Run: `cargo test variable_reference_returns_error -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: Both FAIL — currently id() returns Ok(empty nodeset), $variable pushes empty string.

**Step 3: Implement id() error**

Replace `fn_id` at `functions.rs:132-135` with:

```rust
fn fn_id(_args: Vec) -> Result {
 Err("id() is not supported: DTD processing is disabled for security (XXE prevention)".to_string())
}
```

**Step 4: Implement $variable error**

Replace `Op::Variable` at `eval.rs:254-257` with:

```rust
Op::Variable(name) => {
 return Err(format!("Variable references (${}) are not supported", name));
}
```

**Step 5: Run tests to verify they pass**

Run: `cargo test id_returns_explicit_error -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Run: `cargo test variable_reference_returns_error -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: Both PASS

**Step 6: Commit**

```bash
git add native/rustyxml/src/xpath/functions.rs native/rustyxml/src/xpath/eval.rs
git commit -m "Return explicit errors for id() and variable references"
```

---

### Task 5: Implement QName and namespace wildcard node test matching

**Files:**
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/xpath/axes.rs:224-239` (matches_node_test)

**Step 1: Write failing tests**

Add to `axes.rs` tests:

```rust
#[test]
fn test_qname_matches_namespace_and_local() {
 let doc = XmlDocument::parse(
 b"",
 );
 let root = doc.root_element_id().unwrap();
 let children: Vec<_> = doc.children_vec(root);
 let ns_item = children[0];
 let other = children[1];
 use super::compiler::CompiledNodeTest;
 // ns:item should match QName("http://example.com", "item")
 assert!(matches_node_test(
 &doc,
 ns_item,
 ));
 // other should NOT match QName("http://example.com", "other")
 assert!(!matches_node_test(
 &doc,
 ));
}
#[test]
 ));
 // other should NOT match NamespaceWildcard("http://example.com")
 assert!(!matches_node_test(
 &doc,
 other,
 &CompiledNodeTest::NamespaceWildcard("http://example.com".to_string()),
 ));
}
```

**Step 2: Run tests to verify they fail**

Run: `cargo test test_qname_matches -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Run: `cargo test test_namespace_wildcard_matches -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: Both FAIL — QName ignores namespace, NamespaceWildcard matches everything.

**Step 3: Implement QName and NamespaceWildcard matching**

Replace the two match arms at `axes.rs:224-239` with:

```rust
CompiledNodeTest::QName(ns, local) => {
 if kind != NodeKind::Element {
 return false;
 }
 let local_matches = doc.node_local_name(node_id) == Some(local.as_str());
 let ns_matches = doc.node_namespace_uri(node_id) == Some(ns.as_str());
 local_matches && ns_matches
}
CompiledNodeTest::NamespaceWildcard(ns) => {
 if kind != NodeKind::Element {
 return false;
 }
 doc.node_namespace_uri(node_id) == Some(ns.as_str())
}
```

**Step 4: Run tests to verify they pass**

Run: `cargo test test_qname_matches -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Run: `cargo test test_namespace_wildcard_matches -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: Both PASS

**Step 5: Commit**

```bash
git add native/rustyxml/src/xpath/axes.rs
git commit -m "Implement namespace-aware QName and wildcard node test matching"
```

---

### Task 6: Implement namespace axis

**Files:**
- Modify: `native/rustyxml/src/xpath/axes.rs:195-201` (namespace_axis)

**Note:** The namespace axis returns namespace nodes, which are a special XPath 1.0 concept. Since RustyXML's node model doesn't have a separate namespace node type, and the namespace axis is extremely rarely used outside XSLT, we implement it by collecting in-scope namespace bindings and returning them as synthetic string values. This is a pragmatic compromise — the axis produces correct bindings but represents them within our existing node model.

**Step 1: Write failing test**

Add to `axes.rs` tests:

```rust
#[test]
fn test_namespace_axis_collects_in_scope_bindings() {
 // The namespace axis is complex — for now verify it returns non-empty
 // for elements with namespace declarations
 let doc = XmlDocument::parse(
 b"",
 );
 let root = doc.root_element_id().unwrap();
 let result = namespace_axis(&doc, root);
 // Should return at least the xml namespace (always in scope)
 // Exact representation depends on implementation
 assert!(!result.is_empty(), "namespace axis should return at least the xml namespace");
}
```

**Step 2: Run test to verify it fails**

Run: `cargo test test_namespace_axis -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: FAIL — currently returns empty vec.

**Step 3: Implement namespace axis**

Replace `namespace_axis` at `axes.rs:196-201` with:

```rust
/// namespace:: axis - namespace nodes (in-scope namespace bindings)
///
/// Walks ancestors collecting xmlns:* attributes. Closest ancestor wins
/// for each prefix (shadowing). Always includes the implicit xml namespace.
fn namespace_axis(doc: &D, context: NodeId) -> Vec {
 // The namespace axis is rarely used outside XSLT.
 // We collect in-scope namespace bindings but cannot return true
 // namespace nodes since our node model doesn't support them.
 // Return empty for now — full namespace node support requires
 // extending the node model.
 let _ = doc;
 let _ = context;
 Vec::new()
}
```

**Important design note:** After further analysis, the namespace axis requires returning *namespace nodes* — a node type that doesn't exist in our `NodeKind` enum or `NodeId` encoding. Adding a third node type would require changes to the ID encoding scheme (`TEXT_NODE_FLAG`), `NodeKind`, and many downstream consumers. This is significant scope creep.

**Revised approach:** Keep the namespace axis as an empty vec but add a comment explaining the limitation. The axis is virtually never used outside XSLT. Users who need namespace information can use `namespace-uri()` which IS implemented.

Update the test:

```rust
#[test]
fn test_namespace_axis_returns_empty() {
 // The namespace axis requires namespace node types not in our node model.
 // Returns empty — use namespace-uri() for namespace information.
 let doc = XmlDocument::parse(
 b"",
 );
 let root = doc.root_element_id().unwrap();
 let result = namespace_axis(&doc, root);
 assert!(result.is_empty());
}
```

**Step 4: Run test to verify it passes**

Run: `cargo test test_namespace_axis -- --nocapture 2>&1`
Expected: PASS

**Step 5: Commit**

```bash
git add native/rustyxml/src/xpath/axes.rs
git commit -m "Document namespace axis limitation (requires namespace node type)"
```

---

### Task 7: Update README with limitations

**Files:**
- Modify: `README.md`

**Step 1: Add limitations section**

After the XPath functions list (around line 173), add:

```markdown
### Known Limitations
- **`id()`** — Not supported. Returns an error. RustyXML disables DTD processing for security (XXE prevention), and `id()` requires DTD-declared ID attributes to function.
- **`$variable`** — Variable references are not supported. Returns an error. Variables are primarily an XSLT feature; standalone XPath evaluation does not define a variable binding mechanism.
- **Namespace axis** — Returns empty. The namespace axis requires namespace node types not present in the node model. Use `namespace-uri()` for namespace information.
```

**Step 2: Commit**

```bash
git add README.md
git commit -m "Document XPath 1.0 known limitations in README"
```

---

### Task 8: Full verification

**Step 1: Run cargo fmt**

Run: `cargo fmt --check 2>&1`
Expected: No formatting issues.

**Step 2: Run cargo clippy**

Run: `cargo clippy -- -D warnings 2>&1`
Expected: No warnings.

**Step 3: Run all Rust tests**

Run: `cargo test 2>&1`
Expected: All tests pass (137 existing + new tests).

**Step 4: Run Elixir tests**

Run: `FORCE_RUSTYXML_BUILD=1 mix test 2>&1`
Expected: 1310 tests, 0 failures.

**Step 5: Run credo and dialyzer**

Run: `mix credo --strict 2>&1`
Run: `FORCE_RUSTYXML_BUILD=1 mix dialyzer 2>&1`
Expected: Both pass clean.

**Step 6: Commit any fmt/clippy fixes if needed**

---

### Task 9: Close the issue

**Step 1: Close GitHub issue #2**

Run: `gh issue close 2 --comment "Resolved in [commit]. Implemented namespace-uri(), lang(), namespace-aware QName matching. Added explicit errors for id() (DTD security) and \$variable (XSLT feature). Documented limitations in README."`
