For some reason, an extra 7E response appears to have snuck in and broke the request-response behavior. Could be a bad j2534 implementation?

I don't have a solution at the moment but this issue will be handy in case it's not an isolated incident -- thanks for bringing in this issue.

By that do you mean driver or hw or something else? The original reporter said it was just off aliexpress:

I believe that those specific j2534 hw+drivers are generally well behaved, so it's probably some other issue.

This is going to be tricky to diagnose without raw j2534 logs, but we can keep this open and review it if more similar issues show up
