Bug description

No popup for events when event starts even though the checkbox is enabled.

Reproduction steps

1. Enable checkbox.
2. Create a test event in Google Calendar
3. Confirm that MeetingBar read that notification within the next minute.
4. Wait for event to start and observe that there was no popup.

Expected behavior

Popup for every event that MeetingBar can read.

There are several conditions in MeetingBar that can prevent popups (event notifications) from appearing, even if the checkbox is enabled:

1. The system notification settings for MeetingBar must allow notifications, and the alert style must be set to "alert" or "banner". If notifications are denied or set to "none", MeetingBar will not show popups, regardless of its internal settings. You can check this in System Settings > Notifications > MeetingBar.
2. The "Send notification when event starts" setting (joinEventNotification) must be enabled in MeetingBar preferences. If this is off, no popup will be scheduled for event start.
3. If you have enabled "Hide meeting title", the notification will still appear, but the event title will be replaced with a generic label.
4. MeetingBar only schedules notifications for events it can read and that have not already been scheduled. If the event is modified or deleted, or if the app is restarted, this can affect notification scheduling.
5. The notification will not appear if the event start time has already passed or is too close to the current time when MeetingBar checks for events.

The presence or absence of a meeting link does not affect whether a popup appears; notifications are based on the event itself, not the link.

If you have confirmed that the checkbox is enabled and MeetingBar is reading the event, please double-check your macOS notification settings for MeetingBar and ensure that notifications are allowed and set to "alert" or "banner". If notifications are still not appearing, try toggling the notification setting off and on in MeetingBar, and restart the app to force a refresh of scheduled notifications.

For more technical details, MeetingBar uses the UserNotifications framework to schedule and present notifications, and it checks both its own settings and the system's notification permissions before displaying a popup. You can see this logic in the code: Notifications.swift, AppDelegate.swift, and Shared.swift.

There are no known issues or discussions directly related to popups not appearing in version 4.10.0, and the presence of a meeting link is not required for notifications to work.

If you continue to experience issues after checking these settings, it may be helpful to reset notification permissions for MeetingBar in macOS and re-enable them.

From the initial report, I've now ensured that Notifications are enbled with type Alert. So, the warning is gone.

After that, I set a new event which I can confirm that MeetingBar sees it.

No fullscreen full-popup, note the regular popup on top-right shows up correctly, here we're talking about the fullscreen popup. So, the bug indeed exists.

When I created the event with meeting link, this time the fullscreen popup was shown.

Hence, we should discuss this further if that should be a hard requirement to show the popup.

Based on the current code, having a meeting link is indeed a hard requirement for fullscreen popups in MeetingBar. The function responsible for triggering fullscreen notifications explicitly checks that the event has a meeting link before displaying the fullscreen popup—if there is no link, the fullscreen notification will not appear, even if all other settings are enabled (source).

This behavior is intentional in the code and is not documented as a bug or discussed as a feature request in the repository. If you think fullscreen popups should also be available for events without meeting links, this would require a change in the current logic.

Message to project owners, do you believe this condition can be relaxed or atleast be user configurable?

Did some digging, the reason we added this condition is because when we did auto-join historically, it led to error Link not found. 1f25958

However, later, we split the autojoin feature from full-screen notification. 35e12f7

Does it make sense to revisit this workflow?

Bug description
No popup for events when event starts even though the checkbox is enabled. This happens even if there is a meeting link (it is a zoom link). It was working fine and stopped after the last restart (Mac OS 15.6). Not 100% sure if upgrade had anything to do with it.
