From 2088a947fbe713339f2addd62499398f7af4dc2f Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: leynos Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2026 23:27:11 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 1/6] Make integration assertions fallible Replace panic-prone assertions in Result-returning integration tests with fallible checks that preserve their predicates and diagnostics. Keep genuine I/O and subprocess failures on the existing Result paths, and share small fallible assertion helpers across related test crates. Remove the unused connection harness builder and make fixture byte construction fallible without changing its generated payloads. --- tests/client_lifecycle.rs | 102 ++++++------ tests/common/fallible_assertions/check.rs | 23 +++ tests/common/fallible_assertions/check_eq.rs | 26 +++ .../common/fallible_assertions/check_equal.rs | 27 ++++ tests/connection.rs | 10 -- tests/connection_fragmentation.rs | 38 +++-- tests/correlation_id.rs | 39 +++-- tests/fixtures/client_messaging.rs | 12 +- tests/fixtures/client_send_streaming.rs | 10 +- tests/fragment_transport/eviction.rs | 13 +- tests/fragment_transport/rejection.rs | 13 +- tests/lifecycle.rs | 81 ++++------ tests/metadata.rs | 80 +++++---- tests/middleware_order.rs | 28 ++-- tests/multi_packet.rs | 51 +++--- tests/multi_packet_streaming.rs | 81 ++++++---- tests/preamble/basic.rs | 40 +++-- tests/preamble/responses.rs | 16 +- tests/preamble/timeouts.rs | 58 ++++--- tests/prepared_app.rs | 133 ++++++++++----- tests/prepared_app_tcp.rs | 48 ++++-- tests/push.rs | 147 +++++++---------- tests/routes.rs | 90 ++++++----- tests/workspace_manifest.rs | 153 +++++++++--------- 24 files changed, 752 insertions(+), 567 deletions(-) create mode 100644 tests/common/fallible_assertions/check.rs create mode 100644 tests/common/fallible_assertions/check_eq.rs create mode 100644 tests/common/fallible_assertions/check_equal.rs diff --git a/tests/client_lifecycle.rs b/tests/client_lifecycle.rs index af73b7a11..008a363af 100644 --- a/tests/client_lifecycle.rs +++ b/tests/client_lifecycle.rs @@ -10,9 +10,16 @@ use std::sync::{ Arc, - atomic::{AtomicUsize, Ordering}, + atomic::{AtomicU32, AtomicUsize, Ordering}, }; Split both files into feature-focused modules, following the existing `tests/preamble/` and `tests/fragment_transport/` layout: - prepared_app/: support, startup, teardown, reuse, tcp, property - connection/: support, multi_packet, logs, state The root files are now thin drivers that declare the submodules. Shared fixtures, harness configuration, and assertions move into a `support` module in each crate. No assertion predicate, message, callback ordering, or test name changed; the crates still build to the same 5 and 17 tests respectively. The `#[path]` declaration for the fallible assertion helpers stays in the driver file because those helpers are `pub(super)`, which resolves to crate visibility only at the crate root. Add a "Fallible assertions in integration tests" subsection covering why `Result`-returning tests need it, how to choose between `check`, `check_eq`, and `check_equal`, and the `Result<(), String>` failure contract. Record the `#[path]` placement rule, since the helpers are `pub(super)` and therefore must be declared in the crate root rather than in a submodule. Remains test-only scaffolding, so no ADR or design document change is needed. Every other I/O error is returned from the task instead, so it surfaces when the caller joins the handle. +### Fallible assertions in integration tests + +Integration tests whose bodies return `Result` cannot use `assert_eq!` and +friends without tripping `clippy::panic_in_result_fn`, which flags a panic +inside a function that promises to report failure by returning `Err`. The +`tests/common/fallible_assertions/` modules provide three small replacement +checks. Each returns `Result<(), String>`: `Ok(())` when the check holds, and +`Err` carrying the predicate-specific message when it does not. A test +propagates a failure with `?` rather than panicking, so the diagnostic reaches +the harness as an ordinary test failure. + +The three checks divide by what they compare: + +- `check` (in `check.rs`) takes a boolean predicate and the message to report + when it is false. Use it for conditions that are not plain equality, such as + a collection containing an expected element or a value lying in a range. +- `check_eq` (in `check_eq.rs`) compares two `Copy` values and reports + `"{message}: expected {expected:?}, got {actual:?}"`. Use it for small scalar + values, such as a connection count or an expected byte. +- `check_equal` (in `check_equal.rs`) compares two borrowed, possibly unsized + values (`A: PartialEq + ?Sized`, `E: ?Sized`) and reports the same + expected/actual shape. Use it for string slices, structs compared by + reference, and other non-`Copy` values. + +Each helper lives in its own module because each integration-test crate pulls +in only the checks it uses, with an explicit path attribute: + +```rust +#[path = "common/fallible_assertions/check_equal.rs"] +mod fallible_check_equal; + +use fallible_check_equal::check_equal; +``` + +The helpers are declared `pub(super)`, which resolves to crate visibility +because the test file is the crate root. That is why the `#[path]` attribute +must appear in the test file itself rather than inside a submodule: a +declaration inside a submodule would be visible only to that module, not to the +sibling test modules that need it. + +These helpers exist only for integration tests. Production code and +non-`Result` unit tests continue to use the standard assertion macros, whose +panic-on-failure behaviour is exactly right when the test has no result channel +to report through. + ### `LoggerHandle::Default` and `ObservabilityHandle::Default` Both `LoggerHandle` (in `wireframe_testing::logging`) and `ObservabilityHandle` From 5c9306128801e3bc37ba48b9ce1d87d3f86325f3 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: leynos Date: Sun, 27 Sep 2026 17:48:52 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 5/6] Fit the extracted manifest helper within the argument policy The rebase conflict resolution merged `main`'s wireframe-loom assertions into this branch's extracted `check_workspace_members` helper by adding `loom_package_id` as a fifth parameter. This repo pins `too-many-arguments-threshold = 4` in `clippy.toml` (the default is 7), so the helper breached `clippy::too_many_arguments` under `-D warnings`. The helper now takes the expected members as a slice of `(package_id, description)` pairs, and each call site names its own pairs. That keeps `main`'s description-carrying loop and the verification of all four workspace members, including the wireframe-loom crate, while restoring the two-parameter signature. The branch exists to remove `#[expect]`s of this shape, so suppressing the lint here would have worked against its purpose. Gate result for this head: `make check-fmt`, `make typecheck`, `make test`, `make markdownlint`, and `make spelling` all exited 0; `make lint` failed only on this one diagnostic, which is now fixed. The function is now 55 lines, below both the CodeScene threshold and its pre-rebase length, and the duplicated `ok_or_else` formatting lives in one place. The diagnostic text is unchanged: it still names the requested field and reports the actual value. `cargo check --workspace --all-targets --all-features` and `cargo fmt --all -- --check` both exit 0 for this change.
