Issue
When attempting to install or update WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), users encounter errors such as:
Error Code: 0x80070003
Messages like: "The system cannot find the path specified."
These issues occur due to:
Missing or outdated WSL binaries (wsl.exe).
Incorrect installation paths for WSL components.
Incompatibility with the Windows version.
Solution
Step 1: Check Your WSL Version
Go to Settings > System > System Components > Windows Subsystem for Linux.
Click the three dots next to it, select Advanced Options, and check the version installed.
Step 2: Download the Latest Version
Visit the winget-pkgs repository for WSL on GitHub.
Navigate to:
https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases/
x64: https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases/download/2.4.13/wsl.2.4.13.0.x64.msi
arm64: https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases/download/2.4.13/wsl.2.4.13.0.arm64.msi
Paste the URL in your browser to download the .msi file.
Step 3: Install the MSI File
Run the downloaded .msi file and complete the installation process.
Restart your computer after installation.
Step 4: Verify Installation
Open PowerShell and type:
wsl
If working correctly, WSL should launch without errors.
