Is there any way to get gpx files for archived labs? Some of the labs at Geowoodstock were archived before I got home.

No, the Adventure Lab is simply deactivated. This is determined by the owner and can be activated at any time.
It corresponds to the temporary unavailability of geocaches. Actually, archived Adventure Labs lead directly to the Adventure Lab main page when the link is clicked. They are also not visible in the app.
This Adventure Lab is definitely archived (ie: retracted by HQ) and could not be activated again.

before redirecting to the main page.
but the GetAdventureIdBySmartLink API call ends in a 404. so i was not able to fetch the id from the url.

That's correct behaviour. The adventure was retracted by Groundspeak. That is: it's vanished and obviously gave a 404.

I've just looked at the Adventure I archived a couple of days ago and there isn't any mechanism to unarchive it.

On my active adventures there is an option to turn it off. I think that option corresponds to Temp Disable, whereas Archive is just that. Everything is read-only.
