Is OpenCart compatible with MariaDB?

I was looking at the page https://docs.opencart.com/en-gb/requirements/ and it does not mention MariaDB. Are people running OpenCart exclusively using MySQL or does it also work with MariaDB?

If it supports MariaDB, maybe the docs page https://github.com/opencart/opencart.github.io/blob/master/docs/en-gb/requirements.html could be updated to say that MariaDB is also a supported option.
