🔍 Comprehensive MLB Player Search - User Guide

✅ New Feature: Search ANY MLB Player!

The Statcast Spray Chart Pro now has access to the complete MLB player database from 2008+ (the Statcast era). You can search for any current or recent MLB player!

🚀 How It Works

  1. Live Database Access: Connects directly to MLB's player database via pybaseball
  2. Intelligent Caching: First search takes 10-20 seconds, subsequent searches are instant
  3. Fuzzy Matching: Handles typos and partial names
  4. Smart Filtering: Filters to only include players from the Statcast era (2008+)

✅ These searches work great:

  • "Aaron Judge" → Finds Aaron Judge
  • "Judge" → Finds Aaron Judge
  • "Mookie Betts" → Finds Mookie Betts
  • "Guerrero" → Finds Vladimir Guerrero Jr and others
  • "Tatis" → Finds Fernando Tatis Jr
  • "deGrom" → Finds Jacob deGrom

⏱️ Performance Notes:

  • First search for any player: 10-20 seconds (fetching live data)
  • Subsequent searches: Nearly instant (cached)
  • Internet required: For new player lookups

🔧 How to Use

  1. Open the app: http://localhost:8501
  2. Enter player name in the sidebar search box
  3. Click "🔍 Search Players"
  4. Wait for results (first search may take ~15 seconds)
  5. Select player from the dropdown
  6. Explore their spray chart with full analytics!

Then try searching for your favorite player!

The first search will show a "Gathering player lookup table" message - this is normal and only happens once. After that, you'll have access to comprehensive MLB analytics for any player you want to analyze! ⚾🎯
