Failed to preview local file

Allowing File Access Permission

How to turn it on: In the Chrome Extensions management page, locate the installed "Markdown Reader" extension, click on "Details", and find the option "Allow access to file URLs" in the details page. Switch it to the enabled state (Please rest assured that "Markdown Reader" only performs read and display operations on markdown files and will not modify or upload user file data).

Due to security reasons, Chrome by default disables extension access to local files. Therefore, after installing the plugin, you need to manually enable the permission in order to preview local markdown files.

@shooteram There is an internal check for "text/markdown" here, but there are also some prerequisite conditions. For instance, the URL needs to end with ".md", ".txt", or ".markdown"... Does the document you preview meet this requirement?

to me, if the http content-type is text/markdown even if the url path doesn't end with a file extension, it should still be handled by your extension

You're not wrong, but detecting whether a page meets the rendering conditions on an arbitrary page requires injecting and running extension code. To avoid intruding on arbitrary webpages, the Markdown reader has imposed a restriction: it renders only URLs of the .md type (and related), rather than solely considering the content-type.

The best approach is to add the .md extension to the URL of the Markdown content. This is the most appropriate method.

If it is a local file (fill://), you will need read：https://github.com/md-reader/md-reader#allowing-file-access-permission.

I think the probability is that there is a problem with the MIME of your local file, the new version has made the text/x-markdown format compatible, so you may be able to open the local file normally, you can take the time to try it if you want to.

No problem, just wasn't what I was looking for.

I was anticipating using my browser to view markdown files. However, that's not what this extension didi. Instead it displayed raw text. Moreover, I noticed that my browser has slowed down since adding the extension. I ran your extension on Google Chrome, however, I also use Edge (occasionally), and FireFox. Neither of my alternate browsers slowed down the way that Chrome did. Grant it, that Chrome, which used to be the fastest browser has become a memory pig and currently takes longer than a stripped down version of itself, but, when takes nearly 60 seconds, just to display the homepage, that's really slow.

I just closed and reopened the browser and removing the extension did vastly improve the startup speed.

Hi I like this extension, it functions great, but it seemed to have one big limitation: that there aren't choices on the rendering of the markdown other than the github flavor. I'm picky about style (partly due to my eyesight) and would like some choices on that, e.g., to choose one with a serif font, the proportions thereof, and to manage the margins. Anyway I'll check back in if see if you've added those features and perhaps re-install it if so.

Hello, sorry it took me so long to reply. But, yes, I'm looking for a useful way to move between in-browser AI chat and formats I can edit, share, and save as a document that non-tech people can use. It doesn't even need to be functional HTML, just legible with code snippets separated from the text and some basic formatting. I've come to quite like markdown and I know (now) there are ways to convert markdown to HTML, but I export from browser to markdown then export as HTML/PDF/DOC as necessary.

Hello, love the dark theme and the collapsible table of contents. However, I couldn't get the auto refresh feature to work. I've enabled full access to local files, private windows, and data on all sites. That was the only deal breaker for me. If you have suggestions I could try to get this to work, I would gladly welcome them.

Not sure where'd you'd put it, but if possible it would be handy to make it clear - before they run it - the steps to enable local file load. Pretty common to have docs locally in md format and a shame if people mistakenly assumed it doesn't work (it does work, well!)

In fact, there is a reminder in the popup (by clicking the extension icon in the upper right corner of the browser), but currently, the icon is hidden by default after the extension is installed, so most people do not see this reminder. As a result, they may notice that the file is not rendering and then uninstall the extension. Because of this, if permissions are not granted, the file page will not be processed by the extension, and no reminder can be displayed on the page, which is quite confusing for me.

I will work on improving this issue. Wishing you a pleasant experience!

What motivated you to uninstall Markdown Reader?

• Looks like I have to create account to paste and render markdown. This shouldn't be the case, there are plenty platforms where this is not needed and the overall process is much simpler. When I did try creating account it wasn't a smooth processes (add google sign in).

Are there any specific improvements or additions you would like to see in future updates?

• Make an extension that allows users to simply click the extension and paste markdown. You can build features around it and improve from there but the first thing a user should see when they click the extension is a text editor to paste markdown.

The basic functions can be used without logging in. Logging in is only for managing subscriptions.

The rendering method is to open a .md file in the browser, and then you can preview it. However, the method of previewing by pasting text is not supported now, I will make improvements in the future. Thank you for your suggestion!

In installed this extension on Brave (Linux Mint) so I could view markdown files, both on line and off line. When I opened a resident file, it didn't view it as a markdown file and all I saw was raw source. I was also hoping I could have updated the file when needed. I recognize that an extension shouldn't be considered as powerful or utilitarian as an editor, but being able to append to an open file should have been easy to do.

Please add a print mode, the sole reason i looked for a way to use the webbrowser to render the rich text format for which 9 of 10 apps are webbrowsers in disguise.

As it is, the sidebar uses half of the space and the font is way too big, fits 40 characters at most.

Used pandoc -t html file.md -o file.html and opened in the browser in the end.

First, I did notice a freeze when installing, which never happened with other extensions.

Then, when I opened my markdown files, all the special characters (regular Spanish accents) were scrambled:

This should be "Tecnología de Asignación". I'm working with Spanish documents, so this is a complete deal breaker.

This was the one I tried. I've seen this many years ago in HTML when not setting the right encoding. But I have no way to set encoding for an md file, as far as I know, so probably the reader should be able to recognize the charset somehow.

After I downloaded it and tried to open it in the browser, the browser seemed to be able to correctly identify the encoding and render it. Is the result I got normal?

I did not see it as in your first screenshot. The text in the viewport looked as in your devtools' preview, with those weird symbols in place of any vowels with accents.

Notice that I'm serving this with vite. This is definitely relevant and I forgot to mention it, sorry about that. I just reinstalled and tried opening it as a local file and the output then is as expected.

I'm not sure why this is... The response looks exactly the same. As for headers:

I cannot see anything that would explain the different behavior. I'm guessing it may be something about how Chrome handles file urls... Let me know if I can help.

When I previewed this file using npx serve, there was no encoding issue. I suspect the problem lies in Vite's static file service, even if the extension is uninstalled, the raw content displayed by the browser remains incorrect.

• If you are in the development stage, you can try manually adding decoding rules:

Only a small portion of the features require subscription. The vast majority of the functions are free to use. You must have missed something. If the preview of local files fails, please first check if you have granted access permission to local files. Please refer to the top comment.

I had already opened that page and searched for the "Allow access to file URLs" setting. The reason I didn't find is was a bad translation to Swedish (my language in Chrome).

Now I've found it and it says "Tillåt åtkomst till webbadresser i filen", which means "Allow access to web addresses in the file". I didn't make the connection.

Anyway, things are working nicely now. Thanks!
