Project has no proper way to be installed on a recent raspberry pi os because of a dependency on omxplayer.

This project should not be public, as it seems no longer maintained

Just install Buster (tested on a Raspi 3B with this software and it works fine):
https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspios_arm64/images/raspios_arm64-2021-05-28/

Of course is open source so you are free to rewrite the code for VLC or other player.
