Towny Wars Redone #11

A few months ago (I think?) some players had a chance to participate in the server's first "Towny Wars," where fake towns and nations were set up on a pre-made battlefield and players could join up with each side to fight each other without having to take any risks or causing real conflict. In fact, just recently another group of battles was waged on the server, with ten or so players taking part.

From feedback received from players (and personal experience), these battles are quite enjoyable to fight in, and add a unique feature that sets this server apart from most others. As such, their recurrence in the future is a no-brainer, but there are a few problems with how it currently works.:

  • Battles take a lot of time to set up and administrate; they involve messing with player towns and balances, so the time and effort necessary to keep track of everything going on is very significant
  • Players do not have the ability to choose when they'd like to fight; they have to wait for someone to organize and administrate the battle
  • Equipment set-up is rather messy and doesn't allow for much customization

Clearly, there are some hurdles to be overcome before this feature would be optimized for casual use, but luckily there's a pre-made system that could allow for this to flow much more smoothly. A plugin called BattleNight (available at http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/battlenight/) allows for the creation of custom arenas, custom classes, and, best of all, allows players to orchestrate when they want to fight without troubling someone to oversee it all.

Hypothetically, this plugin is available for implementation right now, but more appealing features are planned to arrive in an upcoming release, such as Capture the Flag, Free-For-All battles, and even the ability to spectate. The plan will be to wait until version 1.5 drops and implement the plugin from there.
