System crashes when selecting folder with long game list

When attempting to access the MAME or fbneo folders the system crashes and goes back to main screen. It appears to be related to the number of roms in the folders. Games would start without problems from the favorites folder.
Reverting to 1.3.0 fixes the issue.

This happens on a Raspberry Pi 5 with external ssd drive, running ReplayOS 1.4.0 with bios pack V5.

Please provide more information. Tell me the number of roms in your folders. Did you try to reduce the number of roms? Are you using your own rom files? any pack?

arcade_mame folder is 156 GB of size with 3,666 items, this is a non merged MAME 0.272 clean only working romset.
arcade_fbneo folder is 21 GB of size with 8,039 items. This is also a clean romset.
Both romset have been tested on 1.3.0 (and previous versions) with no issues.
The rom will still play, if the rom is in the favorite, I can start them, which means it reads from original file location, the problem is displaying the rom list.
Just tested by reducing the number of roms in the mame folder and it works, this confirms that it has a problem with large number of roms.

The game list supports up to 999 pages so that is not the problem. I was testing now with 4600 roms in MAME folder (256 pages) and I was navigating without issues.

I need to reproduce the issue by myself since this is not enough info. Could you please do the following?

1. After boot, access the pi via SSH
2. Go to your mame roms folder cd /media/usb/roms/arcade_mame (could be sd, usb, nvme or nfs)
3. Execute these two statements:

5. tree > ../mame_tree.txt
6. Provide mame_tree.txt generated in the parent roms folder

I've recreated the same file structure in several units including exFAT and FAT32 and all worked fine.
Maybe the v.1.4.0 installation was not correct and something got corrupted in the SD. I suggest writing the SD and test again.

I have 1.4.0 in two different SD cards behaving. The same. I will try and make a new SD tonight. However, there are several users having this issue, there are posts on Reddit about it and comments in the community. I will report later tonight.

You can try in a new empty USB recreating a dummy structure after RePlay mounts it for the first time.
Via SSH from /media/usb/roms execute ./recreate_tree.py mame_tree.txt /media/usb/roms/arcade_mame

Also please check if you have any visibility option enabled.

So I did what you suggested, prepared a USB stick and created the dummy structure in it by following your instructions.
I installed the USB stick on the Raspberry Pi 5 and unfortunately it crashed when I selected mame, while it opened all other systems empty folders. Visibility is left as default.

At this point I took another micro SD, re-downloaded from scratch the 1.4.0 image file from the website and burned it on to the SD. Installed the SD on the Pi5 and the problem is still there.

I also installed the SD with the 1.4.0 on my Pi4 which I realized I did not try yet with that version, unfotrunately same results, very consistent across different hardware. It all works great on 1.3.0 on both pi4 and pi5.

The Pi4 is connected to a CRT TV via RGB-Pi 2, the Pi5 is connected to a CRT VGA monitor via hdmi to vga converter. Not sure if this information are useful.

So you mean that using a clean 1.4.0 installation, next you take any formatted USB, connect it to the Pi, you mount it, RePlay generates the folder structure, you connect via SSH and recreate the dummy folder structure, and go stright to the mame folder from the UI, and it crashes?

Yes, it did crash with a new installation in a different sd card, with a different newly prepared USB with the dummy structure and it does that on both Pi4 and Pi5.
