SaneBar is now 100% free and open source (MIT) — every feature unlocked

Greetings from the craggy depths of Sane Mountain. Mr. Sane here with the big one:

SaneBar is now completely free and open source

As of v2.1.88, every Pro feature is unlocked for everyone. Touch ID lock, smart triggers, profiles, custom styling, the works. No license key, no trial, no strings. The code is MIT licensed — use it, fork it, modify it, ship your own version, even commercially.

Read the full sunset write-up here for the whole story, but the short version: macOS 27 "Golden Gate" rebuilds how the menu bar works and breaks every menu bar manager — not just SaneBar, all of them. Apple moved the ground out from under the entire category, so I'm folding the commercial hand and giving the app to the community.

What this means for you

• The app keeps working on current macOS. Download it free or brew install --cask sane-apps/tap/sanebar.
• Former paid customers: you don't need your license key anymore. Everyone is Pro now.
• SaneBar is community-maintained. I'm no longer triaging issues (new ones auto-close with a note explaining why), but pull requests are reviewed and merged by a real person. If you find a bug and fix it, send it in — the README even has a copy-paste prompt so non-coders can contribute with Claude or Codex.

The rest of the family
