Ability to define custom thumbnails

Hi,
Thank you for this wonderful piece of software, so useful to maintain a list of useful links and web tools. A little suggestion I have, the thumbnail functionality is nice but it works in so few websites, it would be great to be able to import one as a file I think.
I'll try to add it to my own instance as I need it but maybe it could be of use to other people?

This has been attempted before: #361

I think this is out of scope for Shaarli (Keep It Simple), but if you still want to have a try:

• Thumbnailing is handled by https://github.com/ArthurHoaro/web-thumbnailer
• Adding file upload functionality to shaarli core is definitely not wanted, so acceptable workarounds would be:
  • Adding the ability to specify a thumbnail URL manually and pass it to web-thumbnailer
  • Writing a thumbnail upload plugin (discussion about generic file upload here: file sharing/upload service integration #58)

This shouldn't clutter the "Edit link" dialog because most users won't need this functionality, so any changes to the dialog must live in a plugin.

Thank you very much for the detailled answer, I'll look into that. The plugin idea is great and you're right, it's for some rare specific cases, not the main focus of this project.
