Get rid of the scrollbar use only scrollmap bar

Replace the rubbish scrollbar button that is tiny in width and often displaced alongside the code scrollbar which is much better representation of what you are looking at in the viewport and should just be scrollbar itself. Currently you can directly click anywhere on the scrollmap and it will jump to scrolling into that area, but if you hold down rmb to drag scroll it doesn't work you have to then use the adjacent scrollbar button which is often not aligned at all.. its dumb and annoying having both these, both slightly broken and incomplete in ux functionality.

Currently only Visual Studio and VScode seem to get how to properly do a scrollmap bar that works properly.

i just want to let you know that VScode also has both scrollbar AND scrollmap. and in defense of sourcegit, vscode has different scrollbars depending on which view you are using and that is even worse! at least here we have a default scroll component that behaves everywhere the same and with expected behavior.

having the scrollmap be more zoomed in / localized and scroll itself like in vscode is a lot more complex, and maybe worth it. But the data you want to display is vastly different compared to vscode. Here we want to highlight differences instead of code structures.

however, a good change for the current version would be to allign the scrollmap and scrollbar at least (this would require adding a padding top and bot equal to the size of the arrow buttons which are platform dependent, i think).

what is your opinion on this approach?

The vscode scroll minimap is perfect for code and code comparison, it doesn't need a scroll bar, which is now functionally useless when the minimap itself not only displays more information but the UX of it working exactly the same as a scrollbar aswel.

here is vscode differences view for git commits... with the minimapp scrollbar only showing.. works perfectly, can click anywhere on it and and hold and drag as you would with a scrollbar.. its best of both.

the nuance of the minimap scroll is that you can click anywhere on it to jump to that area, and you can also hold down the mouse to move up and down like a scrollbar.... sourcegit gets the minimap display correct but the finer detail of its ux functionality is kinda misssing and the extra scrollbar for dragging just looks out of place but still required.. it actually reminds of how awful jetbrain ide's are, they don't even have a built in minimap its been a jira ticket for 10years, and the plugin codeglance which does replicate it is far from being as good as either vscode or visual studio, despite have some extra options, one of them being hide the original scrollbar.

Anyway my opinion on what you suggestion is that yes that is a move towards an improvement, I'd be happy with that, but ultimately is it not just basically doing what I'm after only with the existing scrollbar bit sticking out still, only at least aligned better? but not overlapping over the existing the minimap area where I could just use the mouse over that minimap viewport area of the code and scroll it.....

okay i see you point, and i agree on the functionality part.

i just want to let you know that VScode also still has the 2 components, for smaller files they are just perfectly aligned, but for bigger ones it becomes clear:

that said, their implementation is a lot more complex and thus as you mentioned smoother to use. Definitely keep this issue open for improvements to this. I expect them to come in small pieces over time (small opensource project vs paid team of Microsoft employees). The maintainer already mentioned in a similar ticket that the current solution is due to difficulty of the used framework for customizing scroll bars. This makes me think he is open to improving it when the rest of the app is stable enough. Thank you for clearly pinpointing what the nuances are that you would expect.

apologies if i came off as downplaying your issue in my last comment. I've never worked with the UI library this project uses so sadly enough i struggle to find time to contribute to UI issues like this. I'll leave the conversation to people that can from here on. GL

I don't think I've ever noticed that version of it, probably because the minimap area itself is completely clickable and draggable, so directly having to have the mouse over that smaller scrollbit isn't a problem you encounter, it's also the same transparency as main bar so it doesn't visually stick out as much.

It's hard to align displaying range with height/width of the thumb button.

To facilitate user dragging, the thumb button has a minimum height(vertical scrollbar)/width(horizontal scrollbar). But the highlighted display range in minimap is strictly aligned with viewport height.

yes visually aligned accurately, but there could still just be some fixed invisible padding above and below that minimap viewed area that would extend so easier for clicking/dragging. for finer scrolling up/down in the actual code viewport area can use the mousewheel
