To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Pull the latest tethys
2. Start tethys: tethys manage start, then you will see the error

Hi @shawncrawley. I ran into this again after pulling the latest tethys:

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'reactpy'

I traced all reactpy / reactpy_django references in the repo with Claude's help. Can you take a look?

Will fail at import time (same error class as the traceback)

• tethys_components/library.py:731 — from reactpy import web in the class body of DynamicPackageManager (runs on import). This is the one in the traceback.
• tethys_sdk/components/utils.py:1 — top-level from reactpy import component, event.
• tethys_components/hooks.py:8 — top-level from reactpy_django.hooks import ....
• tethys_components/hooks.py:20 — top-level from reactpy import hooks as core_hooks.

Safe — already guarded by has_module

• tethys_apps/base/page_handler.py:35-36
• tethys_portal/asgi.py:19-20
• tethys_portal/urls.py:327-328

Safe — deferred (only fail if the function/method is actually called)

• tethys_components/library.py:112 — inside _ReactPyHTMLManager.__init__.
• tethys_components/library.py:791,798 — uses self.web, only on call.
• tethys_components/utils.py:138, :155, :200 — imports inside functions.
• tethys_components/library.py:22 — logging.getLogger("reactpy.web.module") doesn't require the module to exist.

Settings/config references (load-time, but indirect)

• tethys_portal/settings.py:263 — "reactpy_django" is listed in INSTALLED_APPS. Django will try to import it during app loading → ModuleNotFoundError. Likely needs a has_module guard too if reactpy is meant to be optional.
• tethys_portal/urls.py:58 — REACTPY_WEBSOCKET_ROUTE loaded from_module="reactpy_django". Worth checking whether that helper tolerates a missing module.
