Clone Larger HDD to Smaller HDD or SSD e.g. Clone 4TB HDD with <2TB of Data to a 2TB SSD

Is there a way to clone a larger HDD to a smaller HDD or SSD? Or do the HDD’s have to be the same size?
E.g. clone a 4TB HDD that has less than 2TB of data on it to a 2TB SSD.
I’ve looked through the manual and don’t see any parameters for this.
In other words, clone just the used part of the larger drive to the new smaller drive.
Can this be done without partitioning the larger failing drive?

The way hddsuperclone works and the best way to handle failing drives is to perform a 1-to-1 exact copy to another drive of the same or larger size. Technically you could clone to an image file and do exactly what you want if you import a ddrescue domain mapfile or dmde bytes file. Another alternative is to clone to an image file and use the virtual disk mode to copy out the specific files that you need (that could require 2 spare drives however - one for the image file and one for the file data)

There are probably some tweaks that we could make in hddsuperclone itself to automate calling of the partclone tool to generate a rescue domain and I'll look into that possibility.

Another tweak we could make is skip writing zeros to the destination drive or image file to take advantage of sparse writes
