Live entry involves scoretakers sitting in the spectator area and entering times into WCA Live as they show up on the timer displays, with signals or signs from the judges to indicate penalties. Having immediate results available on WCA Live adds a lot of engagement to livestreamed rounds.
The live entry process is a bit messy since WCA Live is currently not designed for it. It involves quickly typing in a name or user ID, using the enter key, down arrow, or minus key to move the cursor to the correct attempt number, entering the result, then spamming the enter key to quickly move the cursor to the submit button and submit the result. This is not ideal since it's easy to accidentally overwrite results, enter the results for the wrong competitor, and generally involves many key presses for every result.
I think an ideal live entry mode would be an on/off toggle that scoretakers can enable, basically the same UI that batch mode has. It would have the following behaviour:
- Unchecks batch mode if it is checked
- Displays each competitor's ranking from the previous round to make it easy to determine which competitor is sitting at which station without needing to check a different page
- Allows scoretakers to filter results to only show and enter the results for the competitors they are monitoring
- Changes the behaviour of the enter key to jump to the earliest unentered result from the ID box, and jump to the submit button from a result box
- Keeps the behaviour of up/down arrows and plus/minus keys for manual adjustments (e.g. fixing a prior mistake)
