SSL error when adding new subscription

I realize this code is a few years old so perhaps that's the problem, but when clicking the "subscribe" button on http://127.0.0.1:3000/subscribe, I get:

140222397450304:error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol:s23_clnt.c:769:

Any ideas?

Ahhh turns out port 587 for Gmail is not good, switching to port 465 did the trick :)
