National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS) claims "WAVEWATCH IV" and "WW4" as its trademarks, and is in the process of formally registering these trademarks.
Presently, the trademarks are recognized by adding the superscript ™ to the trademarked names. Once the trademark has been formally registered, ™ will be replaced by ®.
It is common practice to use the ™ trademark designation to the WAVEWATCH IV and WW4 in titles of presentations or publications, and the first time the term is used in abstracts and in the bodies of presentations or publications. For subsequent uses of the term the trademark designation is commonly omitted.
Note that WAVEWATCH is originally an acronym, and should therefore always be fully capitalized.
