I have a rather large wanted list, is there a way to to change the wanted format of all wanted to to audiobook or both? It seems to default to ebook only.

Yes, though not from the Wanted page itself. Two separate things going on.

Changing what you already have. Go to Books, filter Status to Wanted, tick the header checkbox, then Set both (or Set audiobook) in the bar at the bottom. The bulk action is set_media_type and it is wired up on Books, Authors and the author detail page. The Wanted page only offers search, unmonitor and blocklist, which is why it looks like there is no way to do it.

One catch with a large list: the header checkbox selects the current page only, not everything matching the filter. Bump the page size to 250 at the bottom and it is four clicks per 250 books. If you have thousands and that is painful, say so and I will add select all matching.

You can also do it per author instead, from Authors with the authors selected, which sets every book of theirs in one go.

Stopping it happening again. Your read is right, the default is ebook. It is Settings, Metadata Profiles, default media type (default.media_type), and it ships as ebook. Set it to Both and everything added from then on lands as both. The companion strict checkbox next to it only appears while the default is ebook or audiobook, and it decides whether that default overrides what the provider says the book actually has.
