On the issue of removing data points in SED fitting

Hi, I have a question about working with SEDs: is it acceptable to selectively include or exclude photometric data from different bands based on my needs? For example, can I remove data from GALEX, APASS, or other specific bands? Also, are there any standard rules for data selection—such as deleting measurements with observational errors greater than 0.1? My current SED fitting isn't producing good results.

Hi, Sure, you can remove data points that you think are bad from the SED fit. Both GALEX and APASS can be problematic based on the magnitude of your target. You can always look up the target in the original catalogs to check if there are any flags, or if the measurement is only an upper limit instead of an actual observation. There aren't really clear rules for SED fits regarding data selection. But what I do is be consistent, and use the same selection rules for all targets that you are working with. And if you publish, clearly mention what your selection criteria were, so it is reproducible, or can be easily compared to different stars. Good luck.
