Query only links are pushing invalid history state in IE

If you have a link which only has query string like: <a href="?search">Search</a> on https://example.com/sampleapp, when clicking will push an invalid path like:
https://example.com/ps://example.com/sample-app?view=sample

The wrong journey starts around https://github.com/zambezi/address/blob/v3.0.4/location.js#L134 and then the protocol part is broken at https://github.com/zambezi/address/blob/v3.0.4/location.js#L159 which returns //: which results in the URL truncated by the first 3 characters.
