using git remote does *not* create ~/.ssh/known_hosts

at some point - perhaps with 2.50.0 (I don't have an earlier version) it seems that using git remote... fails and does not create the ~/.ssh/known_hosts file when in a script. doing it from the ssh command there is a prompt to create known_hosts and add the target git server to it. But via a script it does not prompt and does not do it causing script failures.

i know it used to work but it doesn't now.....

also discovered that git 2.50.1 will not update the known_hosts file if the key is changed when git is executed in a script, resulting is a failure on the part of the client to access the server repo.

Hey @lbdyck are you able to provide your full set of commands along with the export GIT_TRACE=1 output? I suspect the culprit may be ssh-specific since there's no mention of known_hosts in the git source.

it is an ssh issue - suspect it came in with OpenSSH version 9

this is an issue for zigi (written in rexx) which invokes git for the user (and probably for IBM's DBB) - i can find no way around it via an environment variable and do not want to update .ssh/config

so - thoughts?

I've updated zigi in the 3.25dev branch with ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no git@github.com -q (although the github.com is replaced by the name of the hosting server). this seems to do the trick and this only runs once each time a repo is opened.

This could still be an issue for others that script their git server access
