Error contract: exit-code taxonomy + JSON error envelope #31
Description
Design decision 4 (interview 2026-07-18): the error contract is the agent-facing product surface.
Today every error exits 64 with human prose, even under --json (APSError is flattened into ValidationError at Sources/aps/Aps.swift:87).
Acceptance criteria
- Exit taxonomy (sysexits-aligned): 64 usage (bad key/flags/invalidValue), 65 corrupt persisted data, 66 expected state file missing, 73 write did not persist, 70 internal bug; documented in README + specs
- With
--json, stderr additionally gets{"error":{"code","message","hint"}}with stable snake_case codes from APSError cases - Corrupt
note.json/profile.jsonfails loudly (65) instead of silently returning the initial value (StateStore.swift:59 fallback) - Smoke asserts exit codes and stdout purity per case; specs updated in the same change
Locked decisions (design interview round 2, 2026-07-18)
- Envelope timing: mode-following by default (envelope only with --json/--jsonl), plus APS_ERROR_JSON=1 env opt-in for unconditional structured errors on stderr.
