Summary

Projects couldn't be reordered, and different devices showed them in different orders. The daemon kept registered projects in a HashSet and listed them sorted by full path, which isn't the same as sorting by the names users see.

Now each machine's daemon project registry (<socket>.projects.json) holds that machine's project order. Every client shows it and saves reorders back to it.

This builds on #295 (explicit project membership, protocol 13), which made that registry each machine's single project list and pushes changes to clients through subscribe_projects.

  • Daemon:
    • The registry is an ordered list.
      • Registration appends to the end.
      • Removal keeps the remaining projects in order.
      • Older registry files load in their stored (path-sorted) order, so nothing moves on upgrade.
    • inventory (projects), health and the subscribe_projects stream all report roots in registry order.
    • New reorder_projects { project_roots }, which replies project_order:
      • listed roots move to the front, in the order given;
      • registered roots that aren't listed keep their order after them;
      • unknown roots are ignored, so a stale client list can reorder projects but never drop one.
    • A reorder is pushed to every subscribe_projects subscriber, so other devices update right away.
  • Protocol 14 (breaking; main already used 13): update pu, pu-engine and the apps together on every machine.
  • Mac:
  • iPad: Move Up / Move Down through the shared sidebar menu model.
  • iPhone:
    • "Reorder Projects…" on a machine's context menu opens a reorder sheet.
    • It sends the bridge mutation workspace.reorderProjects, which uses the existing operation ledger and permission checks.
    • It's offered only when the bridge advertises workspace.projectOrder and the machine's daemon is at protocol 14 or later.
    • The bridge also refuses older daemons before dispatching.
    • The phone waits up to 100s for the result, as the contract documents, instead of the generic 35s, which was shorter than the bridge's own wait.
  • Daemon spec advanced from EXPLORING to CONVERGING (requested in review):
    • DMN-001 (one daemon for all projects, or one per project) and DMN-002 (version mismatches) each get researched options with trade-offs and sources.
    • The questions stay open (?) until the owner picks a direction.
  • Docs:
    • docs/reference/ipc-api.md
    • docs/product/daemon.md
    • docs/spec-system.md
    • apps/purepoint-mobile/docs/contract.md
    • CHANGELOG.md

Not in scope: machine order. The iPhone still sorts machines with a dialog first, then by name.

Testing

  • just ci passes
    • The ci-rust steps cargo fmt --check, RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo clippy --all-targets and cargo test --all-targets pass locally at 82bf6b3. cargo deny isn't installed locally; it runs in CI as "Dependency Audit".
    • build-app / test-app call xcodebuild, which agents may not run in this repo (AGENTS.md); they run in CI as "macOS Build & Test".
  • Docs and CHANGELOG updated if behavior changed

PageSpace

  • Tasks: none. This repo declares no PageSpace drive (no project.config.json or drive id in AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md), so the work came straight from an owner request. Administration gap: no task, plan, prompt or handoff pages exist yet.
  • Plan: recorded in this description (Summary above).
  • Prompt: owner request: "projects are not currently able to be ordered. and they show up across devices in different orders. there needs to be a single source of truth and the ability to re order them."
  • Reviews: Codex review thread on the daemon spec, addressed by advancing it. Pending independent review.

Verification (at 82bf6b3)

  • Merge: main (including Make adding and removing projects explicit across devices #295) was merged in. Make adding and removing projects explicit across devices #295 reworked the same registry and sidebars, so the conflicts were resolved by hand; the merge commit message explains how.
  • Earlier CI: at 88779ca (before the merge), every check passed, including macOS Build & Test and Mobile Swift & iOS tests. CI on 82bf6b3 is running.
  • Locally:
    • cargo test -p pu-core -p pu-engine -p pu-cli passes.
    • cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets are clean.
    • node --test bridge/workspace.test.js: everything passes except one existing TLS test that needs the packaged lock helper (lock_helper_missing in agent worktrees; it passes in CI).
    • verification/check-rpc-budgets.py passes.
  • given_concurrent_registration_should_persist_every_project now compares as a set, because concurrent registrations land in completion order.
  • Manual check still to do on real devices:
    1. Drag a project on the Mac. The iPhone (after a refresh), another Mac following the same machine, and pu projects should show the new order.
    2. Reorder on the iPhone. The Mac should update right away.
    3. Restart the daemon. The order should stay.

Autonomous agents never merge directly into main/default/protected release targets. Main acceptance requires applicable checks and independent exact-candidate review; production retains human sign-offs.

Projects showed up in different orders on each device and couldn't be
reordered. The daemon kept registered projects in a HashSet and listed
them sorted by path, while the Mac's local sidebar used its own
per-device open order.

The daemon registry is now an ordered list and the single source of
truth for a machine's project order. New projects are appended, and a
new reorder_projects op (protocol 13) saves an order: listed roots move
to the front, unlisted roots keep their order after them, and unknown
roots are ignored.

- Mac: drag project rows within their section; Move Up/Down in the
project menu. The local section follows the local daemon's order.
- iPad: Move Up/Down in the project menu.
- iPhone: "Reorder Projects…" on a machine, through the bridge's new
  workspace.reorderProjects operation.

BREAKING CHANGE: protocol version 13; update pu, pu-engine and the apps
together on every machine.

A project list fetched before a local move could land after it and put
the old order back until the next refresh. Each move now bumps a
revision, and a refresh that started before the move is skipped.

📝 Walkthrough

Protocol 13 adds persistent project ordering. The macOS sidebar and mobile workspace interface can reorder projects, and the daemon returns the saved order to clients.

Changes: Project ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol and persistent registry ordering

The macOS client sends and receives project-order messages, updates local or machine project lists, and refreshes order from the daemon. Tests cover moves, canonical paths, and protocol messages.
macOS sidebar reorder controls
apps/purepoint-macos/purepoint-macos/Views/Sidebar/*, apps/purepoint-macos/purepoint-macosTests/SidebarMenuModelTests.swift
The sidebar adds Move Up and Move Down menu actions and project-row drag-and-drop. Drop validation limits moves to the project’s current section.
Mobile workspace reorder flow

Rapid project reordering on the Mac can save or display an older order than the user intended. Remote machines are affected the same way. On iPhone, a reorder can briefly revert in the UI if a refresh is in flight. These are bounded ordering glitches, not data loss, but they should be fixed or consciously accepted before merge.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 42.42% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 66 functions across 22 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the required Summary and Testing sections, detailed implementation scope, test evidence, documentation updates, and remaining manual checks. However, it repeatedly states that the change uses protocol 14, while the implementation and objectives identify protocol 13. This creates a material inconsistency in the description.

Resolution

Correct the protocol version references in the description, including the breaking-change notice and iPhone capability requirement, to match the implemented protocol version 13. Then update the Testing section with the final CI result if available; otherwise state that CI is still running or remains pending.

Research both open questions with options and trade-offs:
- DMN-001 (one daemon for all projects vs one per project) recommends
the shipped one-daemon-per-socket model that the global inventory,
machines and project order build on.
- DMN-002 (version mismatches) records the strict-equality handling the
CLI, Mac app and bridge already have, and capability flags as the
  next option.

Main landed explicit project membership (#295) at protocol 13, which
reworked the same registry and sidebars. Resolution:

- Protocol 14 for reorder_projects (main already used 13).
- The registry stays an ordered Vec. Registration appends, removal keeps
the rest in order, and a reorder notifies subscribe_projects streams,
so every device following the registry picks up a new order at once.
- The Mac's local sidebar follows main's projects subscription and now
also sorts into the pushed order; the 30s polling loop is gone.
- Remote projects keep main's Hide/Remove entries next to Move Up/Down.
- Bridge: workspace.reorderProjects sits beside workspace.removeProject,
refuses daemons older than protocol 14 before dispatch, and gets the
100s phone deadline that the contract documents (it fell back to the
generic 35s, shorter than the bridge's own wait).

…made

Two moves made before the first was answered could reach the daemon out
of order and save the older one, and a project list fetched or pushed
before a move could put the old order back on screen.

- macOS/iPad: ProjectOrderSaver sends a daemon's reorders one at a time,
in user order. While one is unanswered, a pushed or fetched list keeps
the order on screen (adds and removals still apply). A failure shows
  the daemon's order again.
- iPhone: an inventory fetched across a reorder keeps the order on
screen, and the order in the reorder receipt is applied once it
  succeeds.
