What

Settings → Agents shows two text fields per agent, at both levels:

Launch command Arguments
claude --dangerously-skip-permissions
codex --no-daemon --search
opencode
npx aider (added) --yes
  • Agents — All Projects (~/.pu/agent-settings.yaml) and Agents — This Project (.pu/config.yaml).
  • The terminal runs command + arguments, nothing else.
  • Before this change, the command was a read-only label. Anything baked into it (scripts/agent-launch.sh codex --no-daemon …) couldn't be edited. Now it's a text field.
  • Add agent adds any CLI the same way as the built-ins. It's named after the program it runs (npx aider → aider) and shows up wherever a new agent is started. Added agents can be removed with ✕.
  • An empty project field uses the All Projects value, shown in grey. The grey text is exactly what runs, nothing else.
  • Removed: the Save buttons (fields save on Return or when you leave the row), the resolved-command preview line, and all text about .pu/config.yaml / launchArgs: "".

Design: https://claude.ai/artifact/L17FmosWAxtzFDYUi3u9WJ

How

  • GlobalAgentSettings gains commands. A project agent's command is now optional and resolves as project → machine → built-in → the agent's name. AgentConfig records project_command and machine_command so Settings can show each level.
  • Agent names are validated by format ([a-z0-9][a-z0-9_-]*) rather than against the built-in list, so added agents save and spawn like built-ins.
  • Protocol (additive, optional fields, no version bump):
    • update_global_agent_settings takes commands and remove_agents; the report carries commands.
    • update_agent_config takes command and remove.
    • config_report agents add project_command, inherited_command and origin.
    • Old apps keep working. With an old daemon, the new app says to update it.
  • Saving only project args no longer writes command: into .pu/config.yaml, so the command stays inherited.
  • A project that stores launchArgs: "" (launch bare) keeps it when its row is saved with a blank Arguments field, for example after editing only the command.
  • Also: the status-tracking caption said "Pi"; it now says "Point Guard".

Testing

  • cargo test --workspace, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets and cargo fmt --check are clean.
    • New tests cover command inheritance, machine-added agents, remove, set/clear/remove of a project command, invalid names, report hints/origin, and protocol round trips.
  • The changed Swift files typecheck against Xcode's macOS SDK (swiftc -typecheck). All 14 GlobalAgentSettingsTests were run outside Xcode against the real DaemonProtocol.swift and AgentConfigState.swift, with a few unrelated types stubbed. All pass.
  • New Swift tests are in purepoint_macosTests.swift.
  • CI's macOS Build & Test (Xcode 26.6) builds the app and runs the Swift tests, and passes. The release archive also passes.
  • Not run locally: xcodebuild, because AGENTS.md says agents don't build the macOS app here. The Settings screen hasn't been checked by hand in the running app.

Known limit

An agent added only to one project appears in the new-agent picker after that project's settings load. Starting it in a different project fails with "unknown agent type". Agents added under All Projects work everywhere.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Add and manage agents for other command-line tools from the macOS app. Configure launch commands and arguments for all projects or override them for an individual project.
    • Project settings inherit all-projects values when fields are left blank. Remove custom agents from all-projects or project settings.
  • Documentation
    • Updated configuration and app guides to explain custom agents, command inheritance, and supported settings.

… agent

Settings → Agents is now two text fields per agent, for all projects and per
project: the launch command (claude, codex, opencode, or anything else) and the
arguments after it. The command was a read-only label, so anything baked into
it (a wrapper script, flags) could not be changed.

- ~/.pu/agent-settings.yaml gains `commands`; a project's `command` is now
optional and inherits: project, else machine, else built-in.
- Any agent type name is accepted, so "Add agent" works the same at either
level; added agents appear wherever a new agent is started.
- Grey hints in a project field are exactly what runs when it is empty.
- Protocol additions are optional fields; older apps and daemons keep working.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds machine-level and project-level agent commands, supports adding and removing custom agents, and updates command resolution, daemon reporting, the macOS settings interface, and related documentation and tests.

Changes: Configurable Agent Commands

Layer / File(s) Summary
Agent command contracts
crates/pu-core/src/types/config.rs, crates/pu-core/src/protocol/*, apps/purepoint-macos/purepoint-macos/Services/DaemonProtocol.swift, crates/pu-core/src/protocol/tests.rs, docs/reference/ipc-api.md
Agent configuration and protocol payloads add project and inherited command fields, command origins, machine command updates, and agent removal fields. Protocol tests cover new fields and legacy payloads.
Command resolution and configuration updates
crates/pu-core/src/config.rs, docs/guide/configuration.md, docs/reference/config-schema.md
Machine settings accept commands and launch arguments for validated agent names. Project configuration applies project commands before machine commands and built-in defaults. Updates can add, edit, clear, or remove project agents.
Engine reporting and request handling
crates/pu-engine/src/engine/*, crates/pu-cli/src/output/*
The engine passes command updates to the configuration layer and reports command values and origins. The CLI prints machine-level commands.
macOS agent settings
apps/purepoint-macos/purepoint-macos/{Models,State,Views/Settings}/*, apps/purepoint-macos/purepoint-macosTests/purepoint_macosTests.swift, docs/guide/workflows/macos-app.md
The settings interface edits commands and arguments for all projects or a project. It supports adding and removing agents, and publishes user-added agents in the variant list.

Editing a project command can silently restore machine-wide launch arguments, including flags the project explicitly opted out of. Preserve that setting before merging; also correct the misleading command documentation.

Mark command as optional in both agent configuration tables.

The project loader accepts an omitted command and resolves it to the machine command, the built-in command, or the agent name. The tables incorrectly mark it as required.

Apply the same correction to the command row in docs/guide/configuration.md.

A stored `launchArgs: ""` looks blank in Settings, so saving the row after
editing only the command sent null and re-enabled the machine-level args.
Also mark `command` optional in the config docs.

Re the CodeRabbit nitpick on docs/reference/config-schema.md: fixed in 7901827. The command rows in both docs/reference/config-schema.md and docs/guide/configuration.md now say it's optional and resolves to the machine command, else built-in, else the agent name.

Settings saves a row's command and arguments together, so the launch-args-only
methods were only reached from tests. Tests now go through the row saves.

Xcode 26.6 failed to produce a diagnostic for AgentLaunchTable's body. Build
each row in its own function instead of an inline closure-or-nil ternary, and
mark the row callbacks @mainactor since they mutate view state.
