the operator's shell into the wired
C0PL4ND is a fast, GPU-accelerated, cross-platform terminal emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS — built in Rust, local-first by design, and great out of the box with zero configuration.
It gives developers a modern terminal with built-in tabs, splits, and session safety (no tmux required), Kitty/Sixel inline images, command-palette navigation, OSC 133/7/8 shell integration, and a striking retro-future default theme — without ever asking you to create an account, and without sending your shell input anywhere. Your terminal is yours.
The name is a nod to Serial Experiments Lain's "Copland OS." C0PL4ND is your shell into the wired.
Most modern terminals make you choose. The fastest ones skip Windows or ship with no tabs. The feature-rich ones make you learn a config language or hand a cloud service your login and your keystrokes. C0PL4ND refuses the tradeoff.
- Windows-first, not Windows-afterthought. The two most-loved modern terminals don't run on Windows at all. C0PL4ND treats Windows as a first-class platform with native ConPTY integration and GPU-accelerated rendering — alongside equally first-class Linux and macOS builds.
- Zero-config, great defaults. It's genuinely usable the moment you install it. You never have to open a config file. When you want to tweak something, it's a simple, readable TOML file — never a programming language you have to learn (and never one a typo can lock you out of).
- Built-in multiplexing + session safety. Tabs, splits, and panes are built in. You don't need
tmuxto organize your work — and C0PL4ND won't close a window full of running processes without warning you first. - GPU-fast and memory-light. Hardware-accelerated rendering with glyph-atlas caching and damage tracking keeps input latency low and idle memory small.
- Local-first. No account. No telemetry. There is no login wall, no required cloud sync, and telemetry is off by default. Your shell input never leaves your device. This is a trust feature, and we treat it as one.
- Open and free. Dual-licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0. Use it, fork it, embed it.
- Cross-platform — native builds for Windows, Linux, and macOS from a single Rust core.
- GPU rendering —
wgpu-backed renderer with a cached glyph atlas and dirty-region damage tracking for low key-to-screen latency. - Built-in tabs, splits & panes — full native multiplexing; no external multiplexer needed.
- Session safety — confirms before closing windows with running processes; never silently drops your work.
- Local-first & private — no account, no required cloud, telemetry off by default, shell I/O stays on your machine.
- Shell integration — OSC 133 semantic prompt zones (jump-to-prompt, select-last-output), OSC 7 working-directory tracking, OSC 8 clickable hyperlinks.
- Inline images — Kitty graphics protocol plus Sixel fallback for previewing images right in the terminal.
- Search — fast in-buffer search across scrollback.
- Command palette — discover and run actions without memorizing keybindings.
- Startup panel — a neofetch-style splash on launch: a brand ASCII logo beside live local stats (OS, kernel, host, uptime, shell, CPU, memory, GPU). Reads only local facts — never the network. Toggle with
startup_panelin config. - Retro-future default theme — the Retro-Future Anime OS aesthetic ships as the default (
itasha-corp): a void-black background with Itasha Purple#7700FFstructure and Corp Green#00FF90live/cursor accents, with an optional CRT/scanline effect (off by default). - Readable TOML config — simple key-value configuration with live reload; sensible defaults mean most users never touch it.
Media lives in
assets/media/. Screenshots are generated headlessly (no display needed) with the legacy/dev binary:c0pl4nd-legacy --screenshot <path.png>. (The canonicalc0pl4ndbinary opens a window;--screenshotis a legacy-only flag — seeman c0pl4nd.)
The default itasha-corp theme: void-black background, Itasha Purple #7700FF
structure and Corp Green #00FF90 live/cursor accents, brand-coloured output,
blinking cursor, and an inline Sixel image (rendered via the GPU textured-quad
image pipeline).
Installer (recommended) — download c0pl4nd-<version>-x86_64-setup.exe from
the Releases page and run it. It installs C0PL4ND under
Program Files, adds it to your PATH, and creates a Start Menu entry.
Heads-up: SmartScreen warning. C0PL4ND is an open-source project and its Windows installer is not yet Authenticode-signed (Windows-trusted code signing for OSS is gated behind an approval process we haven't completed). So on first run Windows SmartScreen will say "Windows protected your PC" / "unknown publisher". This is expected — click More info → Run anyway. You can confirm the download is authentic first with the steps below.
Or grab the portable .zip from Releases and run
c0pl4nd.exe directly — no install required (same SmartScreen note applies).
ARM64 Windows (Surface Pro X, Snapdragon laptops): download the portable
c0pl4nd-<version>-aarch64-pc-windows-msvc.zip and run c0pl4nd.exe — the
installer is x64-only for now, so ARM64 ships as the portable archive.
The release ships a single signed checksum manifest — SHA256SUMS plus its
SHA256SUMS.minisig — that covers every binary, archive, and installer. Verify
the manifest's signature once, then confirm your download's SHA-256 is listed in
it. (The SBOM and build-provenance files are covered by the release's SLSA
attestation — gh attestation verify.)
1. Verify the signed checksum manifest (minisign
/ rsign) against C0PL4ND's public key — the same key the in-app updater trusts:
# public key (id A8D869E2B4DD3FD9)
minisign -Vm SHA256SUMS \
-P RWTZP9204mnYqKT/TK6OfYG70QwFoHF5WuuxODg8tgPU+WdLRJYt6iNNA Signature and comment signature verified result means SHA256SUMS is genuine.
2. Check your download against the trusted manifest:
# Linux / macOS:
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing# Windows — compare the printed hash to the matching line in SHA256SUMS:
Get-FileHash .\c0pl4nd-<version>-x86_64-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256(The in-app updater performs an equivalent check automatically: it verifies the
signed latest.json manifest, then confirms each download's SHA-256 against the
signed digest it pins — refusing anything that fails.)
Download the archive for your CPU from the Releases page —
c0pl4nd-<version>-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.tar.gz (Intel/AMD) or
c0pl4nd-<version>-aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu.tar.gz (ARM64, e.g. Raspberry Pi /
ARM servers) — extract it, and run the binary:
tar -xzf c0pl4nd-*-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.tar.gz # or aarch64-…
cd c0pl4nd-*-unknown-linux-gnu
./c0pl4ndVerify your download against the signed SHA256SUMS — the same way as the
verify steps above. A working GPU
(Vulkan, or OpenGL 3.3+) is required — see
TROUBLESHOOTING.md if the window won't open.
Download the archive for your Mac from the Releases page —
c0pl4nd-<version>-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz (Apple Silicon: M1/M2/M3/…) or
c0pl4nd-<version>-x86_64-apple-darwin.tar.gz (Intel) — extract it, and run:
tar -xzf c0pl4nd-*-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz # or x86_64-… on an Intel Mac
cd c0pl4nd-*-apple-darwin
./c0pl4ndmacOS builds are not yet notarized by Apple (a Developer ID certificate is pending), so Gatekeeper will warn the app is from an unidentified developer. To run it the first time: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway, or
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine ./c0pl4ndafter extracting. This does not weaken update security — the signedSHA256SUMSand thelatest.jsonupdate manifest are minisign-signed (Ed25519) and SLSA-attested, and the in-app updater verifies every download against the signed manifest digest before installing. Verify your download againstSHA256SUMSthe same way as above.
C0PL4ND works perfectly with no configuration. When you want to customize it, edit a single readable TOML file:
- Linux/macOS:
~/.config/c0pl4nd/config.toml - Windows:
%APPDATA%\c0pl4nd\config.toml
Changes are applied live on save. See CONFIG.md for the full reference, including fonts, themes, keybindings, scrollback, opacity, cursor styles, and the CRT/scanline effect.
For the default keyboard shortcuts (and how to rebind them), see docs/KEYBINDINGS.md.
For multiplexing and layout — the split-tree grid, nested tabs, drag-to-rearrange, quick-layout presets, and named-workspace save/restore — see docs/LAYOUT.md.
Hit a snag? See TROUBLESHOOTING.md for fixes to common issues — colour/TERM detection, CJK/IME input, GPU and transparency fallback, and where config and logs live.
C0PL4ND is built with Rust. You'll need a recent stable toolchain (install via rustup).
