Command Line Training

Train a model from scratch:

python src/training.py

Follow the interactive prompts to:

  • Select a model architecture
  • Choose single model or batch training
  • Monitor training progress

πŸŽ“ Training

Training Strategy

The system uses a 2-phase transfer learning approach:

  1. Phase 1: Feature Extraction

    • Base model frozen (ImageNet weights)
    • Only train custom classification head
    • Learning rate: 0.001
    • Max epochs: 20
  2. Phase 2: Fine-Tuning

    • Unfreeze top layers of base model
    • Fine-tune with lower learning rate: 0.0001
    • Max epochs: 15

Data Preparation

  1. Preprocess dataset:

    python src/data_preprocessing.py

    This will:

    • Split data into train/val/test (70/15/15)
    • Apply data augmentation
    • Generate class indices and weights
    • Create data generators

Training Configuration

Edit src/config.py to customize:

  • Batch size
  • Learning rates
  • Epochs per phase
  • Data augmentation parameters
  • Model architectures

πŸ—οΈ Model Architecture

Supported Models

  • EfficientNetB0: Efficient and accurate, good for resource-constrained environments
  • ResNet50: Robust feature extraction, proven performance
  • InceptionV3: Multi-scale feature learning

Architecture Details

All models follow this structure:

Input (224x224x3)
    ↓
Pre-trained Base Model (frozen in Phase 1)
    ↓
Global Average Pooling
    ↓
Dense(512) + BatchNorm + Dropout(0.5)
    ↓
Dense(27) + Softmax

Classes

The model recognizes 27 ASL classes:

  • Letters A-Z (26 classes)
  • Special signs:"nothing"

βš™οΈ Configuration

Key settings in src/config.py:

IMG_SIZE = 224              # Input image size
BATCH_SIZE = 32             # Training batch size
NUM_CLASSES = 27            # Number of ASL classes
INITIAL_LR_PHASE1 = 0.001   # Phase 1 learning rate
INITIAL_LR_PHASE2 = 0.0001  # Phase 2 learning rate
MAX_EPOCHS_PHASE1 = 20      # Phase 1 max epochs
MAX_EPOCHS_PHASE2 = 15      # Phase 2 max epochs

πŸ› Troubleshooting

Common Issues

  1. Camera not detected

    • Check camera permissions
    • Try different camera indices in code
    • Ensure no other application is using the camera

  3. GPU memory errors

    • Reduce batch size in config.py
    • Use smaller model (EfficientNetB0)
    • Enable memory growth (already configured)
  4. Model loading errors

    • Ensure model architecture matches selected type
    • Check that weights file exists and is complete
    • Verify class indices file exists
