A flight recorder for AI agents.
loxodonta writes one receipt per completed tool call an AI coding agent makes, into a plain JSON-lines file, and tells you afterwards whether that file was touched. Each receipt carries the SHA256 of the receipt before it, so an edit, a deletion, or a reorder anywhere breaks the chain and verify names the entry. Two Python files, standard library only: loxodonta.py records and judges, supervisor.py reads the record back. Claude Code and Codex CLI are wired with one command, the OpenAI Agents SDK through a small adapter, and any program that can run a command through run.
The adversary it is designed around is the agent itself (ADR-0002): it has the same access to its log as to everything else on the machine, and a session that reads a prompt injection can act on it and then rewrite the log to hide that it did. Receipts are written by a hook the harness fires after each tool call, outside the agent's control, and a rewrite afterwards shows.

verify exits 0 on VALID and 1 on BROKEN. The rewrite was detected, not prevented: nothing here stops an agent from editing its log, and everything here makes the edit visible. With no harness in the picture, run wraps any command and writes its receipt after it exits, whatever it did:

Python 3.9 or newer, nothing to install. Download loxodonta.py, supervisor.py, and SHA256SUMS from the releases page into one folder, check the sums, and ask the file which version it is:

commit unknown is the expected answer for a download; inside a clone the same line names the commit. Releases are cut from main, where the suite runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows; day-to-day work lands on dev.
install-hook adds hook entries to the harness's own settings file (~/.claude/settings.json, or ~/.codex/hooks.json with --codex) and nothing else: no service, no scheduled job. The harness then runs the recorder as a child process after each completed tool call, and uninstall-hook removes the same entries. The OpenAI Agents SDK has no hooks; its adapter hands the SDK's spans to the same recorder (docs/HOOK.md).

Every session from then on leaves a chain under ~/.loxodonta/receipts/<project>-<hash>/, one drawer per project folder and one receipts-<session>.jsonl per session. A receipt is one JSON line: sequence number, UTC time, actor, a one-line action such as Edit: todo.py or Bash: python -m unittest -q, the SHA256 of each project file the call touched, the previous receipt's hash, and its own. Tool output and file contents are never recorded; commands and URLs are, so treat the store the way you treat logs. Every 25 receipts the hook also commits a hash of the harness transcript so far, which verify --transcript judges. To read the store:

Entry 3 fingerprints the file the agent read, entry 4 sends it off the machine, entry 5 strips the recorder from the settings file. That last receipt exists because the hook fired on the call that removed it; after it the chain goes quiet, and a live session going quiet is what the supervisor's completeness alarm watches for (Claude Code sessions only, today). The credentials are still gone. What remains is the order of events, in a record that holds up:

Usage errors exit 64; 4 is a receipt format this verifier does not speak, 5 a harness transcript that no longer matches what the chain committed. The verdict line says why, the code says how grave.
The anchor is the one piece kept off the machine. loxodonta anchor posts the 32-byte chain head to the public OpenTimestamps calendars, which commit it to Bitcoin; anchor --upgrade completes the proof a few hours later and verify --anchors judges it offline, so everything up to an anchored head is on record as of that block. Off by default; install-hook --anchor-at-session-end opts in for every session end (docs/ANCHORING.md).
Each digest row carries an entry address, a prefix of the receipt's hash, and the other commands climb from there. From inside a project folder:

The same five readings are an MCP server, python supervisor.py mcp, for agents that cannot run the hook; it is read-only, with no tool that writes a receipt (docs/MCP.md). To hand a session to someone off the machine, supervisor package <session-id> zips its chains behind a manifest and loxodonta verify-package <zip> judges the result anywhere, ending SELF-CONSISTENT with a line on what that verdict does not cover (docs/PACKAGE.md).
