feat(sdk,kernel): f.agent resume continues a recorded CLI session - #636
Conversation
An agent step can now continue the CLI session an earlier step recorded, instead of starting cold. This is the "knows the original intent" half of Babysitter: a fixer woken again on the same PR, in the same reused sandbox, resumes its previous session. - Surface: AgentOptions.resume, and AgentResult.sessionId, the session the CLI ran as. - Adapters: Claude runs `-p --resume <id>`; Codex runs `exec resume ... <id>` with the same flags. Adapters declare `resumable`. A resume over the relay transport, or to any other CLI, is refused rather than run cold. - sessionId is read from the journaled transcript evidence (trajectory_tail.transcript.result.session_id), so it works for agents that answer with JSON. It is offered only when it passes the resume rule, so a bounded label is never offered. The Codex digest now records the thread.started id. - One lexical rule in both dialects, tested against testdata/agent-resume-cases.json: 1-200 of [A-Za-z0-9._:-], starting with a letter or digit, so an id is never parsed as a flag. - The kernel carries `resume` (closed STEP_AGENT_FIELDS, shape checked before serde, skip_serializing_if) and refuses a malformed one. - Spec parity fixture agent-resume: identical canonical bytes and hash on both sides. It caught the YAML path dropping the field, which is fixed. - Regenerated flows.schema.json; documented in SURFACE.md. Evidence: evidence/agent-resume/, including the real Claude CLI resuming from another cwd and refusing an unknown session. 🟡 Trailing newline breaks resume admission
A session ID ending in a newline passes agentResumeDeclarationError because JavaScript's $ matches before it. The kernel checks every character and rejects the spec after SDK validation accepts it.
Learn more
The SDK validates resume IDs before emitting the kernel spec. JavaScript's $ anchor can match just before a final newline, but the kernel's is_cli_session_id checks all characters. A value accepted by flows check then fails when the kernel validates it.
Example: resume: "abc\n" passes the SDK expression, while the kernel rejects the newline.
Recommended fix: Anchor the expression at the absolute end of the input and add a trailing-newline case to the shared corpus. The replacement uses a negative lookahead to forbid any remaining character.

🔴 Communication agents silently ignore resume
A communicating agent with resume enters the communication dispatch instead of runAgentCli. That dispatch launches a fresh CLI session, so its declared conversation is never resumed.
Learn more
An agent can declare both resume and communication links. expandCommunication replaces the instruction with a communication envelope while preserving resume. AgentWorker.execute routes that envelope to completeCommunicationDispatch before reaching the direct CLI invocation; the communication runtime spawns its own CLI without consuming resume. The step can finish successfully in a new session instead of continuing its recorded conversation.
Example: An agent step with resume: "1908508f-989e-4159-82b0-6a676c3d74d3" and a communication link starts a new PTY session despite the declared resume ID.
Recommended fix: Reject resume on communication steps during compilation and at dispatch unless the communication runtime gains verified session-continuation support; also cover the combination with an integration test.

🟡 Helper agents silently ignore resume
A helper agent with resume takes the helper dispatch before runAgentCli sees the ID. The helper can succeed without continuing any CLI session.
Learn more
A helper step is represented internally as an agent with a special instruction. Its helper identity is detected by helperCall, and AgentWorker.execute completes it without spawning a provider CLI. The new resume field is accepted on agent steps and only checked inside runAgentCli, which this path never calls. Consequently, a helper-shaped agent can declare resume and complete while ignoring it.
Example: An agent step using a canonical helper instruction and resume: "a" completes the helper effect, not a CLI continuation.
Recommended fix: Reject resume on helper-shaped agent steps before admission or at dispatch, since they have no provider CLI session to resume.

Capture the source-reversion command in the red transcript
The transcript claims the product sources were reverted to 22cd1836 “via git stash,” but it captures only the subsequent test invocation; there is no literal stash/checkout command or output proving which files were reverted and restored. This makes the claimed red baseline unreproducible under the repository's evidence rules.

Replace the placeholder with the executed isolation command
The claimed isolated pass uses RELAYFLOWD_BIN=..., which is not the literal command that produced the captured result and cannot be rerun as written. Record the actual value used, together with its literal output, before treating these 156 passing tests as verification evidence.

Reject explicitly requested resumes whose ID is missing
When a caller follows the documented pattern resume: first.sessionId and the preceding CLI did not report a session, first.sessionId is undefined because the field is optional. This spread silently removes the resume declaration and starts a fresh conversation instead of refusing the requested continuation; distinguish an explicitly supplied-but-missing value or otherwise require callers to prove the ID exists.

Refuse non-resumable adapters during preflight
For a resume step whose effective CLI is a conforming custom wrapper, this validation only rejects relay transport, so flows check can successfully probe the wrapper and report the flow ready. At dispatch, runAgentCli deterministically rejects that same wrapper because its adapter is not resumable, turning a statically knowable incompatibility into a runtime worker_error; preflight should check the resolved adapter capability before admitting the run.

Preserve the session ID when an authored agent times out
When a direct Claude or Codex attempt emits its initial session frame and then reaches a declared f.agent timeout, the worker journals that transcript on the failed completion, but consume returns the timeout marker before readCompletedStepOutput invokes this callback. Consequently the resolved timeout AgentResult omits a resumable session ID even though it is in the journal, preventing callers from continuing the partial conversation through the advertised API.

Session id dropped after timeout
Medium Severity
sessionId is copied only from an accepted success payload in onCompleted. A timeout still returns an AgentResult, but that path never reads trajectory_tail, so sessionId is omitted even when the CLI already recorded the session. A later resume cannot continue that run.

Resume validators disagree on newline
Low Severity
SESSION_ID uses $, and JavaScript lets that match before one trailing line terminator. is_cli_session_id rejects the same string. flows check and f.agent can accept a resume value the kernel then refuses as InvalidAgentResume. The shared cases never include a trailing newline, so the parity tests stay green.

The verb-field lint pins every legal step field, and generates a foreign pair for each field on the other verbs. It asked for a sample value for the new agent-only field, and for the two pairs that field adds (deterministic and llm foreign resume). CI's linux-x64-artifact job caught it. My local full run missed it because the lint throws while the file loads, so it reported as FAIL <file>, not as a failed test, and my output filter dropped it. The earlier capture's filter hid a collection-time FAIL. That FAIL was the verb-field lint, fixed in aa11535. This run keeps every FAIL line: 4278 tests pass and 0 fail. One file fails at collection because its bun pin is 1.4.0 and this host has 1.4.2. f.memory.learn was a hard-coded stub that threw unsupported_verb: ai-hist 0.4.1 has no public trajectory writer, so the write slice was never built. learn() now writes the finding under the flow's script scope, twice: - a compacted trajectory file at <scope>/.trajectories/compacted/<id>.json, the format `ai-hist sync` ingests; - the matching trajectories/history rows in the ai-hist SQLite DB, through ai-hist's own sql.js and an atomic file replace, so the next run's recall/why see it without a sync. The id hashes scope + finding, so a resumed body re-running learn (or a later run learning the same thing) upserts one record. Invalid findings refuse with memory_finding_invalid before any write; persistence failures surface as memory_unwritable. Regenerates AUTHORING.md (also picks up drift from AgentWorkforce#636). This is the session-resume piece of the Babysitter owner plan, approved by the lead as "the heart of Khaliq's knows the original intent ask". A fixer woken again on the same PR, in the same reused sandbox (cloud#4356 + flows#635), continues its previous agent session instead of starting cold. The feature itself is generic

Changes agent-step execution and spec hashing for flows that declare
resume; mis-resume or missing CLI session stores fail steps at runtime rather than silently starting new sessions.Overview
Adds
resumeon agent steps andAgentResult.sessionIdso a laterf.agent(or YAML agent step) can continue the same Claude or Codex conversation instead of starting cold.Spec and validation:
resumeis a new optional agent field in the SDK, JSON schema, and kernel (STEP_AGENT_FIELDS, spec hashing when set). Both sides enforce the same lexical session-id rule (sharedtestdata/agent-resume-cases.json); invalid ids fail closed, andresumewithtransport: "relay"is rejected.Execution: Direct-spawn workers pass
resumeinto Claude (-p --resume) and Codex (exec resume); other CLIs or relay dispatch refuse the step rather than run without the session. Codex transcripts now surfacethread.startedassession_id; authoredf.agentreads journaled transcript evidence and returnssessionIdwhen it passes validation (including JSON-object outputs viaonCompleted).Docs:
