fix(broker): record a spawned worker's cli, host and owner - #1914
Conversation
Fleet workers registered through a node carried no owner or machine, so Agent Relay Desktop listed them under "Other live agents" even on the person's own machine, and a worker named without a harness prefix got no icon. The declared-metadata PATCH now also carries `cli`, `host` (the hostname without `.local`) and `owner_hash` (SHA-256 of the Cloud user id), the keys the desktop records for its own sessions. The user id comes from AGENT_RELAY_USER_ID or, for a service-started broker, the CLI's cloud-identity.json. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

🟡 Custom harness workers get the wrong icon
When harnessConfig.command differs from cli, spawn_declared_metadata_publish records the requested CLI instead of the launched executable. The worker launcher runs harnessConfig.command, so the roster displays the wrong harness icon.
Learn more
Fleet spawn requests may carry a PTY harnessConfig.command that overrides the top-level cli. The effective executable is already resolved for preflight, and the worker launcher actually runs that command. Metadata instead parses the top-level cli on both node-registration and HTTP-fallback publication paths. This leaves a live worker labeled as another harness in the roster.
Example: A request names cli: "claude" and harnessConfig.command: "codex". The worker runs Codex but its metadata says cli: "claude".
Recommended fix: Derive the metadata CLI from the actual effective harness command, including PTY overrides, on both publication paths. Preserve the logical harness label for native sidecars rather than substituting their Node executable.

🟡 Token-supplied workers omit roster metadata
When relaycast_ws_spawn_token supplies a token, spawn_declared_metadata_publish never runs because this branch only handles new registrations. Those workers still lack cli, host, and owner_hash, so the roster cannot identify their owner or harness.
Learn more
A non-verified Fleet spawn can carry an existing worker token. The supplied-token branch returns the token without reaching either new metadata publish call; it proceeds to launch the worker. As a result, this hosted spawn does not receive the newly promised roster fields, even when the broker knows its CLI and owner.
Example: A request carries agent.token: "at_live_existing", cli: "codex", and verify_ready: false. The worker starts, but no metadata PATCH records its CLI, host, or owner.
Recommended fix: Arrange one metadata publication after a successful launch for all hosted credential paths, including supplied tokens; ensure it targets the correct registered identity and does not publish on failed launches.

🟡 Signed-out users remain worker owners
After Cloud logout, a running broker with inherited AGENT_RELAY_USER_ID keeps stamping new workers with the former user's owner_hash. Logout removes the stored identity, but cannot clear the broker's environment.
Learn more
The CLI passes the signed-in user ID to child processes in AGENT_RELAY_USER_ID. A long-running broker keeps that environment unchanged, even when a subsequent Cloud logout removes the identity file. Since the new resolver always gives the inherited value priority, every later spawn keeps the old ownership label until broker restart.
Example: Alice starts a broker and logs out, then the broker spawns worker-b. The metadata still contains Alice's owner_hash although there is no signed-in user.
Recommended fix: Define a live broker identity lifecycle for logout and account switching; invalidate or refresh the inherited identity for future spawns. Ensure a missing identity omits owner_hash rather than reusing a stale one.

Publish the effective PTY harness CLI
When an action spawn supplies a PTY harnessConfig.command that differs from the top-level cli, the worker launches the harness command already resolved as effective_cli above, but this publication records the raw cli. The resulting Relaycast metadata can therefore identify the wrong harness and still omit or display the wrong desktop icon; pass the resolved effective CLI to both metadata-publication branches.

| - Workers a fleet broker spawns now record their CLI (`cli`), the machine's name (`host`) and the signed-in Cloud person who runs the broker (`owner_hash`) in their Relaycast metadata. These are the keys Agent Relay Desktop records for the sessions it registers, so the desktop lists your fleet workers as your agents on that machine, with their harness icon, instead of under "Other live agents". The broker reads the person from `AGENT_RELAY_USER_ID` or, for a broker started by a service manager, from the CLI's stored `cloud-identity.json`. |

Mark the pending release as Patch
This is the first user-visible entry after the 13.1.3 release, but it leaves the heading as plain [Unreleased]. Change it to [Unreleased - Patch] so release tooling and readers retain the required pending SemVer level.

…gn-in Review follow-ups: - Publish once the worker launched, on every hosted credential path of the action spawn (node bind, HTTP fallback and a supplied token), as the API spawn already did. - Record the CLI the worker runs: a PTY harness's own command. - Read the owner from cloud-identity.json at each spawn and stop using the inherited AGENT_RELAY_USER_ID, so a sign-out applies to the next worker and every id passes the CLI's validation. - Resolve the hostname and the identity off the event loop. - Match the spawn test's PATCH body in full; mark the release Patch. Why
Workers a fleet broker spawns are registered through the node with no owner or machine in their Relaycast metadata. Agent Relay Desktop decides "this agent is mine" from
owner_hashand groups agents byhost, so a worker spawned on your own fleet node (for examplecode-desktop-cool@finn-mini) is listed under Other live agents instead of under Me. And a worker whose name has noclaude-/codex-prefix gets no harness icon, because nothing records its CLI.What
Once a worker has launched, on every hosted credential path (node bind, HTTP fallback, a supplied token, and the API spawn), the detached declared-metadata PATCH also carries:
clicli(claude,codex,cursor-agent, ...)host.local(same as the desktop's label)owner_hashidentity_hash)The user id is read from the CLI's stored
cloud-identity.json(honouringAGENT_RELAY_DATA_DIR) at each spawn, off the event loop, so signing in or out applies to the next worker without a restart. The inheritedAGENT_RELAY_USER_IDis deliberately not used: it outlives a sign-out, and a broker started by a service manager has none. Unknown values are omitted, never sent blank. The PATCH stays best-effort, detached and a single request.Verified on a real machine: the CLI's stored
userIdhashes to exactly theowner_hashAgent Relay Desktop stamps for the same person.Note: every worker on a node is attributed to the person running that node's broker, including one a teammate spawned there.
Desktop side (reads
clifor the icon; Mac roster draws it): AgentWorkforce/relay-desktopfix/roster-cli-icons.Tests
cargo test -p agent-relay-broker: all pass, including newspawned_worker_metadata_*andpublish_declared_metadata_carries_the_spawned_worker_keys. The twohttp_spawn_*_publishes_declared_metadatatests match the full PATCH body, including this machine'shost/owner_hash.cargo clippy -D warningsfails only on pre-existing Rust 1.98 lints inpty_worker.rsandnode_control.rs, untouched here.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
Note
Medium Risk
Changes agent metadata published to Relaycast on every fleet spawn path and reads cloud identity from disk at spawn time; wrong or missing identity only affects roster attribution, not registration, but behavior is user-visible in Desktop.
Overview
Fleet-spawned workers now publish roster metadata (
cli,host,owner_hash) in the same best-effortPATCH /v1/agents/:nameused for declared workforce fields, so Agent Relay Desktop can attribute them to the signed-in user and machine (with the correct CLI icon) instead of listing them under “Other live agents”.The broker builds that map at spawn time from the actual launched CLI (PTY harness command when present), normalized hostname (no
.local), and SHA-256 ofuserIdfromcloud-identity.json(notAGENT_RELAY_USER_ID). Collection runs on a blocking task; publish is deferred until the worker has launched on every hosted credential path, with duplicate publishes removed from the earlier registration-only hooks in the WS spawn flow. Also includes a delivery-retry test that models consecutive write failures (macOS pipe quirks) and an integration releaseAgent helper that retries while identity cleanup is still in flight.
