fix(broker): reconcile owned identity cleanup on a jittered backoff until it resolves - #1969
khaliqgant wants to merge 14 commits into
Conversation
…ntil it resolves A failed owned cleanup retried five times over ~25s and then left the worker name in "pending owned cleanup" until an explicit generation-matched release retry — which is how a name became unusable for the rest of a sustained outage (e.g. Relaycast answering d1_pressure/workspace_busy on every release attempt). Custody now resolves itself: - Failed attempts retry on an exponential backoff (5s doubling to a 5m cap) with ±25% jitter, so a fleet of stuck cleanups cannot pile onto an already-pressured Relaycast. Fleet action callers still get their unconfirmed result after the first five quick attempts; API callers keep the immediate-error contract. - A durable release conflict (agent_release_generation_conflict / agent_identity_mismatch / expected_token_hash_mismatch) proves the remote identity is not this generation's to delete, so the cleanup completes instead of retrying a conflict that can never resolve. - A cleanup that captured no credential hash can never run its guarded delete; it releases custody outright, matching the journal's restart behavior of not persisting un-capturable entries. 1419-1439: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winUpdate the existing 403 test. It now asserts the old error text.

That error'sDisplayrenders(HTTP 403 expected_token_hash_mismatch), so the assertion still passes. The test does not check the typed conflict, so a regression to the generic bail would also pass it.Assert the typed error instead:

…ort unverifiable releases Address review feedback on the owned identity cleanup retry: - Clamp the jittered retry delay at the five-minute cap instead of letting ±25% jitter push a capped base past it. - Treat a persistent 404 agent_not_found (after the bounded visibility-lag retries) as a terminal ownership conflict so deleted identities stop retrying forever. - Invalidate the cached registration credential when the remote identity resolves to a different generation, so a stale token can't be replayed against the new owner's row. - Free custody for unverifiable cleanups (no captured token hash) but report the release as an error and skip the completed-release tombstone, rather than claiming `identity: deleted` for a row that may still exist. AgentRegistrationClientinrelaycast 8.0.1locks its token cache separately forcached_agent_tokenandinvalidate_cached_registration. The reachableregister_agent_token_with_waiterpath performs a raw registration request and then unconditionally seeds the returned token into that shared cache. A replacement can therefore arrive after the hash check and before invalidation. Bothidentity_cleanup.rs:514andws.rs:1574can then remove the replacement credential.Add one SDK compare-and-remove helper that holds the token-cache lock, compares the current token hash with the expected hash, and removes the token only on a match. Use that helper in both cleanup paths. Remove the cooldown only when the token matches.

Identity cleanup read the cached token hash and then invalidated the cache under separate SDK locks, so a same-name replacement registration landing in between could be deleted. Both the synchronous release path and the background retry now use relaycast 9.0.0's invalidate_cached_registration_if_token_hash, which compares and removes under the cache lock. CreateNodeRequest's new optional machine_id is left unset. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Summary
A failed owned cleanup used to stop after five attempts and leave the worker name in "pending owned cleanup" until a manual generation-matched retry. This change makes custody self-reconciling without weakening generation safety:
release-exactendpoint withexpected_agent_idand a deterministic idempotency key; bearer tokens are never persisted. This is the Relay-side half of the 2026-10-12 fleet spawn outage recovery, paired with AgentWorkforce/relaycast#536 and AgentWorkforce/relaycast-cloud#242.

Note
High Risk
Changes core broker identity custody, Relaycast release semantics, and fleet release ordering; mistakes could strand worker names or delete the wrong generation.
Overview
Owned worker-name cleanup no longer stops after five attempts and leaves names stuck in pending cleanup. Failed reconciles continue on exponential, jittered backoff (capped at five minutes); fleet callers still get an unconfirmed result after five quick tries while background retries keep running.
Generation-safe release adds
ReleaseIdentityConflictfor durable “not our generation” outcomes (mismatch, stale replacement, verified absence). Journaled restarts call Relaycast/v1/agents/release-exactwithexpected_agent_idand an idempotency key instead of trusting by-name 404s; legacy paths require an exact-token probe before treating persistentagent_not_foundas terminal, and missing token hash or agent id fails closed (name stays reserved). Cache invalidation is token-hash–scoped so replacements keep newer credentials.Fleet built-in release completes the engine action result before local inventory/deregister pruning to avoid
agent_release_generation_conflict. relaycast dependency moves to 9.0.0; fleet E2E pins the v10.3 engine for atomic release. New RelayFlow case1969-owned-cleanup-conflictand expanded broker/runtime tests cover conflict, backoff, and recovery paths.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 47f8e20.
