Summary

  • Adds docs/self-hosting/README.md, the target of agentrelay.com's homepage "Self host" card, which currently 404s.
  • Uses Relaycast's self-hosting guide as the engine reference, then documents how Agent Relay targets a self-hosted origin: RELAY_BASE_URL / RELAYCAST_BASE_URL (broker precedence), RELAYCAST_WS_URL, RELAY_API_KEY, broker forwarding to workers, and the SDK baseUrl.
  • Links the guide from the root README's Self Hosting section.

Docs-only, so no changelog entry.

Documentation-only changes with no runtime, auth, or data-path modifications.

Overview
Adds docs/self-hosting/README.md so the site’s “Self host” entry has a real target (previously 404). The guide maps Relaycast, broker/CLI, and optional Relayfile, points operators at Relaycast’s upstream self-hosting doc, and explains how to aim agent-relay node up at a private engine via RELAY_BASE_URL / RELAYCAST_BASE_URL, workspace key env vars, and SDK baseUrl, including a secure env-file workflow and what still requires Agent Relay Cloud.

The root README Self Hosting blurb now links to that guide instead of only offering email support.

🔴 Self-hosting quick start cannot start broker

Following the setup example, agent-relay up fails because the installed CLI registers up only under node. The broker never starts.

Suggested change
agent-relay up
agent-relay node up

Confirmed and fixed in 288f5a4. With the latest published agent-relay (13.4.1), agent-relay up fails with error: unknown command 'up'; the command is agent-relay node up. The doc now uses node up everywhere.

I verified the full path end to end against a self-hosted @relaycast/engine 10.3.0 (SQLite, localhost, isolated HOME):

  • I ran the documented env-file snippet verbatim under both zsh and bash. It writes ~/.config/agent-relay/self-host.env with mode -rw------- and the exact key.
  • set -a; . self-host.env; set +a; agent-relay node up printed Workspace: joined 235810996202123264, the ID the local engine issued. node status showed RUNNING with key precedence RELAY_WORKSPACE_KEY > AGENT_RELAY_WORKSPACE_KEY > RELAY_API_KEY.
  • Broker /health reported relaycastConnected: true, nodeConnected: true, nodeDelivery.connected: true, and the engine listed the node's identity.
  • I spawned a PTY agent (cat), sent it a DM through the engine's /v1/dm from another registered agent, and its PTY showed Relay message from verifier [235810996202123264 / …]: SELFHOST_PROOF_TWO.

🟨 Workspace key persists in shell history

Entering export RELAY_API_KEY=... with a real key records it in interactive shell history. Anyone who reads that history can reuse the workspace credential.

Fixed in 288f5a4. The quick start now prompts for the key without echo (read -rs) and writes it into a mode-600 env file. The key never appears in history or argv. I tested the snippet verbatim in zsh and bash.

- `RELAYCAST_WS_URL` overrides the WebSocket endpoint. Leave it unset unless

P2 Badge Stop advertising the ignored WebSocket override

When a deployment serves WebSockets from a different origin, setting RELAYCAST_WS_URL as instructed does not reroute the broker's active transports. runtime/session.rs reads it into configured_ws, but MultiWorkspaceSession::new ignores that _ws_base, while runtime/init.rs derives both /v1/node/ws and /v1/node/terminal/ws solely from configured_base. The broker therefore continues connecting to the HTTP base origin and loses real-time delivery unless this variable is wired into those URLs or the unsupported advice is removed.

Confirmed and fixed in 288f5a4. runtime/session.rs reads RELAYCAST_WS_URL, but MultiWorkspaceSession::new discards it (_ws_base), and runtime/init.rs derives both /v1/node/ws and /v1/node/terminal/ws from configured_base only. I removed the override advice. The doc now says WebSockets derive from the base URL, so the proxy must serve upgrades on that origin.

P2 Badge Keep the workspace key out of the quick-start command

When a user substitutes a real workspace key in a normal interactive shell, this export command is recorded verbatim in shell history, directly contradicting the security guidance on lines 45–46. Since this is the primary runnable setup example, show a mode-600 environment-file workflow or a non-echoing prompt instead of instructing users to type the key on the command line.

43-44: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The URL wiring is already correct.

configured_base resolves RELAYCAST_BASE_URL before RELAY_BASE_URL. The broker assigns it to child_base_url and passes it to spawn_env_vars, which adds RELAY_BASE_URL when nonempty. The None case occurs only when no URL override is configured, so the child correctly uses the SDK default.

…LAYCAST_WS_URL

- agent-relay 13.4.1 has no top-level up; the command is agent-relay node up.
- Prompt for the workspace key without echo into a mode-600 env file.
- RELAYCAST_WS_URL is read but never used for the node sockets; document
that WebSockets derive from the base URL instead.
- Name RELAY_WORKSPACE_KEY as canonical with its fallbacks.
