fix(mount): tolerate ACL-filtered undercounts in complete-v1 verify - #536
Conversation
complete-v1 snapshot verification compared the caller-visible fs/tree count against the raw manifest's filesExpected. On workspaces whose ACL denies reads for some snapshot files (e.g. AgentWorkforce/cloud's root `/.relayfile.acl` denying `**/credentials*`), the tree legitimately shows fewer entries than the manifest counted, and both the tar-seed and full-tree verification hard-failed forever — the mount could never converge. Both paths now distinguish overcount from undercount: - Overcount always fails (server returned more than the manifest). - Undercount requires explicit ACL evidence: a `.relayfile.acl` marker visible inside the listed subtree, or a successful/403 marker probe on the contents root or its ancestors. 403 counts as evidence because the read was enforced. Other probe errors fail closed. - With evidence, verification continues strictly: every listed file is still content-verified (tar bytes or per-file pull), so a broken projection cannot silently materialize a partial tree.

Persist ACL evidence across traversal cycles
When the fallback traversal exceeds the per-cycle file budget (2,000 by default) and a nested live ACL marker is consumed in an earlier Reconcile, this local flag resets to false on the final resumed call even though BootstrapStrictFilesSeen persists. workspaceAclMayFilterView then probes only the contents root and its ancestors, so it cannot rediscover that nested marker and rejects the legitimate undercount indefinitely; persist the marker evidence alongside the traversal checkpoint.

Exempt ACL-filtered empty views from empty-tree failure
When an ACL hides every manifest file, this branch correctly accepts the 0 < filesExpected undercount, but the immediately following empty-tree guard still returns EmptyRemoteTreeError because remotePaths is empty and the manifest count is nonzero. The full-tree fallback therefore still cannot bootstrap a caller with no visible files; carry the accepted ACL-filtered state into that guard.

🔴 Unrelated ACL marker admits partial snapshots
When a visible file disappears from ListTree despite an unrelated ACL marker, the undercount passes verification. A matching partial tar then completes bootstrap without that file, and later audits can delete its local copy.
Learn more
The clone manifest counts the full imported working tree. A workspace ACL marker can hide some entries, but its mere presence does not establish which entries were hidden. Here an unrelated marker lets any short tree pass the manifest comparison. The strict archive check later compares only against githubWorkingTreeSnapshot, not the complete manifest. The bounded-tree path makes the same assumption at the strict count check.
Example: The manifest expects README.md and app.ts. A marker denies only private/**, while a faulty listing omits app.ts. A tar containing only README.md matches that listing, so bootstrap completes without app.ts although this caller can read it.
Recommended fix: Use an authoritative ACL-filtered expected count or a manifest of expected paths filtered with the caller's actual permissions. Compare the verified visible tree against that filtered expectation on both seed and bounded-tree paths; marker presence alone cannot prove the missing count is ACL-related.

🔴 Resumed bootstrap loses nested ACL evidence
When pullRemoteFullTree resumes after passing a nested ACL marker, traversalSawAclMarker resets while the file count persists. The ancestor probe cannot find that marker, so the valid undercount blocks bootstrap.
Learn more
A bounded bootstrap can stop mid-tree and persist its cursor and strict file count in persistTraversal. Each invocation initializes traversalSawAclMarker to false. Only entries visited in the final invocation set it, while workspaceAclMayFilterView probes the contents root and ancestors, not previously visited nested directories.
Example: The first cycle visits contents/private/.relayfile.acl and reaches its file budget. A later cycle drains the tree, seeing fewer files than the manifest but no further markers. If no ancestor marker exists, every probe returns 404 and bootstrap fails indefinitely.
Recommended fix: Persist the nested-marker evidence alongside BootstrapStrictFilesSeen and the traversal cursor. Reset it on a fresh traversal or invalid-cursor restart, and use the persisted value when verifying the completed traversal.

🔴 Fully filtered tree cannot finish bootstrap
When ACLs hide every contents file, workspaceAclMayFilterView accepts the zero count, but the empty-tree guard rejects it. The bounded fallback repeatedly fails bootstrap despite a legitimate empty view.
Learn more
The strict count can now accept zero caller-visible entries even when the manifest expects files. Immediately afterward, the empty-tree guard rejects an empty remotePaths map for a GitHub mount with a positive manifest count. This affects the resumable bounded-tree fallback whenever the tar seed is unsupported or fails.
Example: A manifest outside contents declares three files, and an ancestor ACL marker denies reads to all three. ListTree(contents) returns no files. The marker probe succeeds, yet the fallback returns EmptyRemoteTreeError on every completed traversal.
Recommended fix: Carry the verified ACL-backed zero-count decision into the empty-tree guard. Keep the guard for empty listings without verified ACL evidence and for other mount types.

Addresses review findings on the undercount tolerance:
- Marker presence alone was too weak: a marker is now evidence only when
its read proves ACL enforcement. Each observed/ancestor marker is
re-read; a 403 counts (the read itself was enforced), and a readable
marker must carry a deny rule with a read/manage/* action whose path
glob intersects the mounted subtree. Rules are extracted from both
marker body shapes (newline-delimited text and the bulk-write
{"semantics":{"permissions":[...]}} JSON blob). A write-only or
unrelated-subtree marker no longer admits a partial tree.
- Marker evidence now persists across resumable bootstrap cycles in
state.bootstrapAclMarkers alongside bootstrapStrictFilesSeen, so a
resume that starts after the marker's page keeps the undercount
justification. Reset everywhere the strict counter resets.
- A fully filtered view (0 visible files) no longer trips the empty-tree
guard after its undercount is ACL-justified — aclFilteredUndercount
carries the decision past the EmptyRemoteTreeError check.

Second review round:
- RemoteFile now decodes `semantics` — production ACL markers keep rules
in `semantics.permissions`, not necessarily in the body. Marker probes
follow server precedence: structured semantics when populated, body
rules (text or semantics JSON blob) otherwise.
- aclMarkerRules decodes bare JSON-array bodies (the `{"` guard skipped
them before).
- Marker cap raised to 256 — the probe early-exits on first evidence, so
a tail of write-only markers can no longer hide a read-deny marker
past the limit.
- Glob literal-prefix overlap now requires a `/` boundary when the
prefix extends past the mount root, so `/repo/contents-old/**` cannot
justify an undercount under `/repo/contents`.
- Live `.relayfile.acl` rows no longer increment strictFilesSeen — they
are not manifest entries, and counting them masked missing files or
forced false overcounts on subtrees with nested markers.

Summary
complete-v1snapshot verification compared the caller-visiblefs/treecount against the raw manifest'sfilesExpected. On workspaces whose ACL denies reads for some snapshot files (e.g.AgentWorkforce/cloud's root/.relayfile.acldenying**/credentials*), the tree legitimately shows fewer entries than the manifest counted, and both the tar-seed and full-tree verification hard-failed forever — the mount could never converge..relayfile.aclmarker visible inside the listed subtree, or a successful/403 marker probe on the contents root or its ancestors.403counts as evidence because the read was enforced; other probe errors fail closed.Companion to relayfile-cloud PR #311, which makes the merged tar export ACL-filter the same way (deny → filtered fall-through instead of hard-403).

Note
Medium Risk
Changes complete-v1 mount verification and ACL interpretation; behavior is intentionally fail-closed on probe failures, but incorrect marker matching could allow a partial tree or block legitimate mounts.
Overview
complete-v1 GitHub snapshot checks no longer treat every
filesExpectedundercount as corruption when workspace ACL can hide files from the caller.Overcounts still fail immediately. Undercounts only proceed after
workspaceAclMayFilterViewfinds real read-deny evidence:.relayfile.aclpaths seen during listing (persisted asBootstrapAclMarkersfor resumable bootstrap) and/or ancestor marker probes viaReadFile(403 counts as enforcement; other errors fail closed). Rules are parsed from marker body text or from newRemoteFile.Semantics.Permissions. Live ACL markers are excluded from the strict file counter so they do not mask missing snapshot files. The same logic applies on tar-seed tree verification and on bounded bootstrap traversal end checks; listed files remain strictly content-verified either way.
