NASA restructured the Artemis program in February-March 2026:
- Artemis III is now an Earth-orbit test mission
- Artemis IV (early 2028) is the first crewed lunar landing at the
south pole
- Lunar Gateway canceled in March 2026
Updates the project's framing to reflect the new mission designation.
The methodology, data, and validation are unchanged. The candidate
landing regions identified in NASA's October 2024 down-selection
remain the validation reference.
Adds Lawrence 2025 (NTRS 20250008952) as a reference and a new
Methodology sub-section mapping selene-base's seven criteria to NASA's
Figures of Merit categories. Specific NASA FOM weight values are not
publicly disclosed; selene-base implements physics-driven analogs of
the documented FOM framework.
Surgical scope:
- README: opening tagline, headline blockquote, Engineering decisions
bullet, image alt text, Roadmap "Note on mission designation
(April 2026)" framing block, new v1.5.1 roadmap entry, new "Mapping
to NASA's Figures of Merit framework" Methodology subsection,
Lawrence 2025 added to References.
- docs/v1.5_catalog_report.md: lead-paragraph mission designation
fixed; new FOM-mapping note added to Section 2.
- Source docstrings + viz labels (cli.py, pipeline/validate.py,
criteria/coupling.py, criteria/los_to_earth.py,
validation/__init__.py, validation/nasa_regions.py,
validation/sensitivity.py, viz/webmap.py, viz/site_report.py).
- tests/test_webmap.py: assertion updated to match webmap label.
Intentionally not changed:
- Citation titles ("Gracy & Lee 2024 Update on the Artemis III
Reference Mission", "Down Selected Artemis III Candidate Landing
Site Navigational Grids", NASA Oct 2024 announcement URL slug
artemis-iii) — citations are fixed.
- Wueller 2026 paraphrasing in README, the v1.5 catalog report, the
validation/wueller_comparison.py module docstring, and the bundled
Wueller 2026 README — Wueller wrote under the Artemis III framing,
which was correct at time of publication.
- Historical Roadmap entries (v0.x — v1.4) — covered by the new
"Note on mission designation (April 2026)" framing block at the
top of the Roadmap section instead of backdating the historical
record.
- Plot-rendering code (notebooks/, pipeline/coupling_sweep.py plot
title) and bundled PNG plot images — touching them would require
regenerating images that this release explicitly does not refresh.
Manual follow-up: update the repo About description from "Artemis III"
to "Artemis IV" via the GitHub web UI (gh CLI workflow scope is not
granted on this host).
