I had to force quit the app while the external screen was disabled using the private API. After opening it again the screen didn't appear in the list, so there was no way to re-enable it. Power from the screen via USB C still worked.
Disconnecting the screen and re-connecting to the same port didn't solve the issue. Connecting to a different port did.
