Reddit Focus

Turn Reddit Back Into A Forum

Reddit Focus strips the algorithmic, engagement-driven layer off Reddit and leaves the forum underneath. No home feed. No "recommended for you". No endless scroll. Just the subreddits you choose, search, and direct post access.

It does not block Reddit. It removes the parts engineered to keep you scrolling, while preserving intentional use.

100% local. No tracking. No network requests. No login.

Features

Feature What it does
Feed Blocking Replaces Home, Popular, r/all, Explore, and discovery pages with a clean message + a "Go to Search" action.
Recommendation Removal Removes related/recommended/suggested communities, suggested & similar posts, "Because you visited…", trending, recommended users, and sidebar recommendations.
Sponsored Removal Strips promoted posts, sponsored content, and advertisements.
Infinite Scroll Control Caps the feed at the first batch and adds a manual Load More button instead of endless loading.
Engagement Metric Hiding Optional toggles to hide upvotes, comment counts, awards, and karma indicators.
Old Reddit Support Works on both reddit.com and old.reddit.com with separate selector groups.
Privacy First No data collection, no analytics, no external servers. Everything runs locally.

All toggles persist via chrome.storage.sync and survive browser restarts.

How It Works

  • selectors.js centralizes every Reddit selector (split into new / old / shared groups). When Reddit changes its UI, this is usually the only file you need to touch.
  • content.js is the engine. It detects new vs old Reddit, then runs one function per feature. A debounced MutationObserver plus patched pushState/replaceState handle Reddit's single-page-app navigation, so rules re-apply as content streams in — without hammering the CPU.
  • background.js seeds default settings on install.
  • popup.* is the settings UI, writing toggles to chrome.storage.sync.
  • styles.css holds the block overlay and class-gated metric-hiding rules.

Privacy Statement

Reddit Focus is built to be invisible to everyone but you:

  • ❌ No data collection
  • ❌ No analytics or telemetry
  • ❌ No network/API requests
  • ❌ No external servers
  • ❌ No login or account

The only thing it stores is your own toggle settings, via Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync. Requested permissions are limited to storage and host access to *.reddit.com.

Roadmap

  • Per-subreddit allowlist / blocklist
  • Keyword-based post filtering
  • Scheduled "focus hours"
  • Optional grayscale / reduced-color reading mode
  • Firefox (Manifest V3) port
  • Bundled toolbar icons

Contributing

Contributions welcome — especially selector fixes when Reddit ships a redesign. See CONTRIBUTING.md for guidelines. The fastest high-value contribution is usually updating selectors.js.
