Retire downloads SABnzbd failed instead of waiting for the stall timeout - #102
SABnzbd usually fails a dead NZB within seconds, but ROMarr only reads its Completed history. The queue row stays grabbed until the stall timeout runs out, 180 minutes by default.
What changes
SABnzbd.failed_jobs() asks for mode=history&failed_only=1 in the client's category. For each job it returns the nzo_id, the fail_message, and whether that message blames the release.
Each new queue row records the romarr_id of the client that took it as download_client. retire_dead_downloads collects failures from every client that has failed_jobs. When a grabbed row's client and download_id match a failed job that blames the release, the row becomes failed with release_fault set and SABnzbd's reason as its detail. The existing code then blocklists it and grabs a replacement in the same sweep, which runs every 15 minutes.
What doesn't change
I tried to keep this from touching any setup it isn't about.
Clients without failed_jobs are skipped. That's qBittorrent and every client type other than SABnzbd, so for them the stall timeout is still the only signal.
Failures are matched to rows by the client that took the job and that client's job id, never by title. A job id is only unique within one client, and the same release name often comes from several indexers, so a title match could pin an old failure on a new grab. Rows queued before this change have no recorded client and keep today's stall-timeout behaviour, as do rows without a download_id.
Only reasons that blame the release count: missing articles, encryption, a password, an unwanted extension, CRC errors, corrupt or unusable RARs, and failed verification or repair. A full disk, a failed move, a post-processing script, or any wording it doesn't recognise waits for the stall timeout as before. Blocklisting on a local fault would burn through good releases one sweep at a time.
With blocklist_failed_downloads off, none of this runs, because the check lives inside retire_dead_downloads.
Every missing-articles failure since SABnzbd 2.3 ends in https://sabnzbd.org/not-complete. SABnzbd appends that link outside its translation, so it matches in any UI language. The other phrases are English, and on a translated install those reasons fall back to the stall timeout.
NZBGet has the same gap, but NZBGet.add doesn't record a job id, so this PR leaves it alone.
Older SABnzbd versions
failed_only, fail_message and the nzo_ids returned by addurl exist in SABnzbd's source at 2.3.9, 3.0.0, 3.7.2, 4.0.0 and the 5.1.x branch, and a live 5.1.3 accepts failed_only. The failure messages this matches read the same in 2.3.9, 3.7.2 and 5.1.x. failed_jobs() also checks each slot's status, in case some build ignores failed_only.
Tests
tests/test_sabnzbd_failed_jobs.py adds 40 cases. Besides the fast path, they pin what must not change: qBittorrent-only setups, local failures, title-only matches, a failure from another client with the same job id, rows queued before download_client existed, matching across a restart, rows already past grabbed, and the setting turned off.
Full suite: 2683 passed, 5 skipped, 1 deselected. main gives 2643 passed.
I also ran the patched failed_jobs() read-only against my SABnzbd 5.1.3. It found 21 failed jobs and classified all of them as the release's fault: 20 with Aborted, cannot be completed - https://sabnzbd.org/not-complete and one with Aborted, unwanted extension detected. The one in the romarr category has the same nzo_id as the still-grabbed queue row shown in #101.
Live test
I copied the two patched files into my running 1.8.0 container, whose files matched main byte for byte, and restarted it. The row from #101 had sat grabbed for half an hour after SABnzbd failed it. The first sweep after the restart retired it. The next scheduled sweep, 15 minutes later, retired the next two grabs, which SABnzbd had failed within 15 seconds:

All three were blocklisted, and each sweep grabbed one replacement. This ran the first commit. The later ones only narrow matching to the client that took the job and add tests.
SABnzbd.completed() reads only Completed history, so a job SABnzbd
failed within seconds left its queue row grabbed until the stall
timeout, 180 minutes by default.
SABnzbd.failed_jobs() reads failed history in the client's category,
and retire_dead_downloads marks a grabbed row failed when its
download_id matches a failed job whose reason blames the release.
Clients without failed_jobs, rows without a job id, and local failures
such as a full disk keep the stall timeout as before.

Walkthrough
SABnzbd now reports failed-history entries and classifies release-related failures. The download sweep uses client and job IDs to match reports to grabbed queue rows and retire matching releases before the stall timeout.
SABnzbd retrieves failed jobs for its configured category and returns each job’s name, ID, reason, and release-fault classification. Tests cover request parameters, failed-entry filtering, connection errors, missing API keys, and reason classification.
The sweep collects reports from configured clients that provide failed_jobs. It marks a grabbed row failed when a release-fault report matches the client ID and download ID. Tests cover matching, timeout behavior, client errors, disabled handling, and replacement grabs.

Paginate the SABnzbd failed-history query, or document the 100-entry cap.
failed_jobs reads at most 100 failed history entries and never requests another page. A grabbed row whose failure falls outside that window is not retired on the fast path. It waits for the stall timeout, which is 180 minutes by default.
Possible fix
Loop over the start offset of the history call until a page comes back empty. If paging is not added, state the 100-entry limit in the failed_jobs docstring.

Skip the replacement grab when another row for the game is still grabbed.
When a release-fault failure blocklists a row, the sweep calls request() for the same game. Neither request() nor grab() checks for another grabbed row, and best_release() filters only by blocklist. The other release can be picked again, so the game gets an extra download.

This is how retire_dead_downloads already replaces a row on the stall-timeout and refused paths, and search_missing doesn't check for an in-flight grab either. I'd rather fix it for all of those paths separately than special-case it here, so I opened #103.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@Atkion The supplied code confirms that all retirement paths use the same replacement logic, and search_missing() also lacks an in-flight check. This is a shared issue, not a SABnzbd-specific defect.
Handling it across those paths in #103 is appropriate. I won’t press for a special-case guard in this PR. The duplicate-download concern remains unfixed.

Learning: Within repository "BlizzHacker/romarr", only for files matching one of ["romarr/app.py"]: When reviewing failed-download matching in romarr/app.py, check that each grab records the client's romarr_id as download_client and that reported failures match queue rows by both client ID and job ID. Do not use job ID or client display name alone. Rows without a recorded download_client must not match reported failures and must retain the stall-timeout path.
Carry the external request ID into replacement grabs, and test it.
When SABnzbd reports a release fault, the sweep replaces the download with self.request(row.game, row.platform), which omits external_request_id. The replacement's completion then skips the external asset and status update. The replacement test never sets an external ID, so it passes with this loss. Add a test that tracks an external request through a replacement, then assert its ID and final status.

The replacement grab here is the existing self.request(row.game, row.platform) call, so stalled and refused rows already lose the external request id the same way. I'd rather fix that for every retire path in its own change than fold it into this PR, so I opened #104.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@Atkion The shared external_request_id loss can stay in #104, with tests for all retirement paths. I won’t require that fix in this SABnzbd-focused PR. This is deferred, not fixed.
A job id is only unique within one download client, and two SABnzbd
client rows can both be enabled. Each queue row now records the
romarr_id of the client that took the job as download_client, and a
failure matches on that and the job id together. Rows queued before
this field existed have no download_client, match no failure, and
wait for the stall timeout.

Page the SABnzbd failed-history lookup, or document the window limit.
failed_jobs() reads one history response capped at 100 entries and never passes a start offset. A failed grab older than the 100 newest failures in the category is never matched, so it stays grabbed until the stall timeout. This PR adds the lookup, so the cutoff is new code, but the fallback outcome matches the pre-PR behavior.

failed_jobs() reads only the newest 100 failures, like completed();
say why that is enough. Add a test that a grab's download_client and
download_id survive a reload and still match a reported failure.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
I kept the 100-entry window. completed() reads the same window, the sweep runs far more often than a category collects 100 failures, and anything older falls back to the stall timeout. Paging would add a request to every sweep for no practical gain, so failed_jobs() now says this in a comment.
Added the restart test. A grab's download_client and download_id survive a reload, and the reloaded service still retires the job when SABnzbd reports it failed.
