It depends on your income, family size, and loan balance. The SAVE plan generally offers the lowest payments for borrowers earning under $50,000. PAYE caps payments at 10% of discretionary income with a 20-year forgiveness timeline. Use the calculator to compare all plans with your actual numbers.
PSLF forgives your remaining federal student loan balance after 120 qualifying monthly payments (10 years) while working full-time for a qualifying employer (government, nonprofit, 501(c)(3)). The forgiven amount is tax-free. You must be on an income-driven repayment plan for payments to count.
Refinancing can lower your interest rate, but it converts federal loans to private — which means you lose access to IDR plans, PSLF, and federal forbearance protections. If you have high income, no interest in PSLF, and strong credit, refinancing may save money. Otherwise, keep your federal protections.
Under PSLF, forgiven debt is tax-free. Under IDR plans, forgiven balances after 20-25 years are currently tax-free through 2025 under the American Rescue Plan, but this provision may expire. Plan for the possibility of a tax bill on forgiven amounts after that date.
