The latest ChatGPT/Codex desktop update can replace a previously working app with a build that no longer opens on older versions of macOS.
This happened on a 2017 Intel MacBook Air running macOS Monterey 12.7.6. The app showed a compatibility error after updating, but a previous signed Intel build was successfully restored.

|---|---|
| Mac | 2017 MacBook Air |

Older desktop builds may:
- Miss newer features and security updates
- Stop connecting to OpenAI services in the future
- Prompt you to update again
- Behave differently across Mac models
- Disappear from their original hosting location
Back up important data before changing applications. Do not use an older build on a managed work computer without permission.
Confirmed results are tracked in COMPATIBILITY.md.
