Problem

desktop/src/index.css began with an @import of Google Fonts (Inter and JetBrains Mono). Loading the web UI in a browser or the Vite dev server therefore contacted fonts.googleapis.com, which conflicts with Studio's local-first rule that nothing leaves the user's machine.

What changed

  • Removed the remote @import from desktop/src/index.css.
  • Replaced the Tailwind font stacks with system stacks (ui-sans-serif, system-ui, Segoe UI, ... and ui-monospace, SFMono-Regular, Cascadia Mono, Consolas, ...), and made the startup splash in desktop/index.html use the same sans stack. No fonts are bundled, so there is no licence or size question. The Tauri CSP is unchanged.
  • Added desktop/src/noRemoteFonts.test.ts: fails if any CSS, HTML, TS or TSX under desktop/src, or desktop/index.html, names a known font host or has a remote @import. desktop/vitest.config.ts lets raw CSS through so the guard reads the real stylesheet (vitest otherwise stubs CSS to empty).
  • Added tools/acceptance/local-fonts-offline.mjs and evidence in docs/testing/local-fonts/.

Verification

  • tsc --noEmit: no errors. vitest run: 71 files, 819 tests passed. npm run build: succeeded.
  • Guard mutation check: putting the old @import back made the guard fail; removing it made it pass.
  • Edge offline run (all non-loopback requests recorded and blocked), dark and light themes, text rendered:
    • before: 2 attempts to fonts.googleapis.com
    • after, dev server: 0 non-loopback requests
    • after, production build via vite preview: 0 non-loopback requests
  • Screenshots (anonymous, no engine running) are in docs/testing/local-fonts/.

Limits

  • Edge only. Not run: the packaged Tauri window (so the issue's guess that the CSP already blocked this there is still unchecked) and WebKitGTK.
  • Before and after screenshots look the same on the test machine because Inter is not installed there and the blocked request already fell back to the system font. Machines that previously loaded Inter will now show their system UI font instead.

Closes #94

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Style
    • The desktop interface now uses system-provided sans-serif and monospace fonts instead of Inter and JetBrains Mono. The splash screen and application UI no longer rely on remote font downloads, so text can render without fetching fonts. Font appearance may vary slightly depending on the system fonts available on your device.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The desktop UI now uses system font stacks instead of importing Inter and JetBrains Mono from Google Fonts. A Vitest source scan and a Windows Edge acceptance script check for remote font requests. Documentation and JSON snapshots record the checks.

Changes

Local Font Behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Replace remote fonts with system stacks
desktop/src/index.css, desktop/tailwind.config.js, desktop/index.html
The Google Fonts import is removed. The splash, sans, and monospace stacks use system fonts.
Scan sources for remote font references
desktop/vitest.config.ts, desktop/src/noRemoteFonts.test.ts
Vitest matches CSS imports with optional query strings. The new test scans sources for remote font hosts and imports, and checks detection of remote URLs.
Run and record offline browser checks
tools/acceptance/local-fonts-offline.mjs, docs/testing/local-fonts/*
The Windows-only script runs the UI in dev or preview mode, blocks non-local requests, checks dark and light themes, and writes results. The README and JSON snapshots document the procedure and recorded results.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 6de18

The change removes the remote Google Fonts import in favor of system font stacks and adds checks to keep remote font requests out. No merge-blocking risk is evident. The installed Tauri build was not tested, which is a verification gap rather than a demonstrated defect.

Explanation

Issue #94 requires removal of the remote font import and verification that the installed build makes no request outside the machine. The PR removes the import, uses system font stacks, and adds source and browser checks. The acceptance script supports only Vite dev and preview modes. The documentation states that the packaged Tauri window was not tested.

Add the required packaged-Tauri check.

The acceptance script runs only Vite dev or preview targets in Microsoft Edge. It does not launch the installed Tauri application. Therefore, a remote font request specific to the packaged runtime can evade both acceptance runs. Issue #94 explicitly requires this installed-build verification.

Add a packaged-Tauri run that records requests and fails on non-loopback font requests.

Closing as superseded. The production fix reached main through PR #112 (commit 79dcf53) and shipped in v1.6.0; issue #94 is closed with that evidence. The CSS and font-stack changes in this PR must not be merged over main's refreshed colours and accessibility work, and desktop/src/noRemoteFonts.test.ts is already identical on main.

Branch fix/94-local-fonts is preserved. Residual work in it that main does not have:

  • tools/acceptance/local-fonts-offline.mjs: an Edge/playwright-core check that loads the dev server or a vite preview build with every request recorded and fails on any non-loopback request. It does not cover the packaged Tauri window or WebKitGTK, and a pass is not a claim of zero network traffic. Owner: the harness-residual work tracked with test(acceptance): bounded engine start in the tool-tabs keyboard harness (#95 review thread) #99, to be carried onto main only if wanted. Not required for the fix.
  • docs/testing/local-fonts/ evidence (before/after JSON and screenshots, README): historical evidence for the same check. It stays on the branch and is not carried.
