Summary

Refactor pass on the DeepCitation SDK: split two god-files, extract reusable helper modules, and drop committed test artifacts. No behavior change intended — verification, hydration, and the citation/evidence UX are preserved.

God-file splits

  • react/Citation.tsx → citationPopoverStore, useSpinnerStage, useKeyboardOpenTracking, a content renderer, and useCitationPrefetch.
  • react/constants.ts → focused animationConstants / security / geometry / timing modules (the old 647-line catch-all is now a thin re-export surface).

Helper extractions

  • Canonical DeepText helper module; parsePageId delegates to it.
  • Evidence geometry helpers extracted and expanded (keyholeGeometry, overlayGeometry).
  • proofImageSecurity pulled out of the constants blob.
  • jsonRepair extracted from citationParser.
  • normalizeCitations relocated to cli; canonical-exports drift fixed; render/rendering dir READMEs added.

Fixes (small, behavior-preserving)

  • Avoid a duplicate partial-match snippet.
  • Repeated-line fallback hydration fix.
  • Size popover loading spinner icons.

Hygiene

  • Remove committed .test.js doubles and gitignore them (run tests from source once) — the bulk of the deleted lines.
  • Add textEquivalence dash-variant matching coverage.

Test plan

  • Existing SDK test suite (the .test.js doubles were removed in favor of running the canonical sources once).
  • Exercised live via the /verify end-to-end run in the sibling skills repo: prepare → verify --html → interactive popover (evidence keyhole, page view) rendered correctly against a real OCR'd chart.

  importer in cli/commands.ts and both test files; fix relative import path for
  logSafety inside the new location
- Add README.md to src/render/ and src/rendering/ documenting what belongs in
  each directory to prevent cross-dir contributor confusion

(a) JSON repair extracted: moved repairJson() and its helper
escapeLiteralControlCharactersInJsonStrings() out of citationParser.ts into
new src/parsing/jsonRepair.ts. Import restored in citationParser.ts.

(b) parsePageId collapsed: the local parsePageId() was a thin wrapper that
already delegated 100% to normalizeDeepTextPageId() from deeptext/index.ts,
returning only the {pageNumber, startPageId} subset. Verified behavioral
identity (same function body, no independent logic). Deleted parsePageId()
and updated all callers (citationParser.ts ×3, parseCitation.ts ×1,
cli/hydrate.ts ×2, cli/merge.ts ×1) to call normalizeDeepTextPageId()
directly. parsePageId was not publicly exported (not in src/index.ts), so
the public API is unchanged.

citationParser.ts: 1360 → 1197 lines. All 2729 tests pass.

Move four unrelated concern groups out of constants.ts (984 ln) into
dedicated modules for tree-shaking and clarity:

- proofImageSecurity.ts (145 ln): SAFE_DATA_IMAGE_PREFIXES, TRUSTED_IMAGE_HOSTS,
  isValidProofImageSrc — pure-relocation, no logic change
- keyholeGeometry.ts (146 ln): KEYHOLE_* constants, projectKeyholeDisplayedWidth,
  buildKeyholeMaskImage, EXPANDED_ZOOM_*, EXPANDED_PAGE_CANVAS_PADDING_PX,
  MIN_PAN_OVERFLOW_PX, DEBUG_PAGE_EXPAND_* colors
- animationConstants.ts (317 ln): five-tier timing scale, easing curves, VT
  timings, blink profile, ghost keyframe constants, drawer/locate/interaction
  timings

constants.ts (558 ln) retains CSS variables, design tokens, indicator styles,
z-index, portal, TtC styles, focus/hitbox classes, and re-exports relocated
symbols for backward compatibility (no import-site churn needed for files that
pull multiple concern groups).

High-churn internal importers updated to canonical paths: hooks, motion/,
evidence/, viewTransition.ts, cdn.ts, Citation.tsx, VerificationLog.tsx,
ZoomToolbar.tsx, primitives.tsx, debug/viewTransitionOverlay.ts.

Public API (src/react/index.ts) unchanged — no re-export paths modified.
All 2729 tests pass.

Extract five separable concerns out of Citation.tsx (1576 → 1332 lines):

- citationPopoverStore.ts: module-level pub/sub for one-at-a-time popover coordination
  (announceActivePopover, subscribeToActivePopover)
- useSpinnerStage.ts: 3-stage spinner progression hook (active → slow → stale)
- useKeyboardOpenTracking.ts: A.5.1 focus trap + A.5.2 conditional focus return hook
- PopoverContentRenderer.tsx: memo component for popover body (custom or default)
- useCitationPrefetch.ts: low-priority image prefetch hook

Behavior-identical: no changes to popover timing, focus management, keyboard handling,
touch thresholds, prefetch triggers, or animation. Pure relocation + wiring.

What was LEFT inline: all touch event handling, outside-click dismiss, telemetry,
double-click handler, and the main CitationComponent forwardRef body. These all close
over isHovering/viewState in ways that would require non-trivial param threading to
extract safely — flagging for a future pass if desired.

Public exports (CitationComponent, CitationComponentProps, MemoizedCitationComponent,
UrlCitationComponent, MemoizedUrlCitationComponent, type re-exports) are unchanged.

Tests: 2729 pass, 0 fail (before and after). Build: clean. Lint: 1 pre-existing warning
in unrelated deeptext/index.ts.

Code Review — PR #464: Refactor split Citation.tsx + constants.ts, extract geometry/security/canonical helpers

Reviewed commit 14636f5. CI shows Playwright: FAILURE and lint-and-validate: FAILURE — these need to be resolved before merge.

Overview

Well-scoped, high-signal refactor. The god-file splits are justified, the module boundaries are clean, and deleting ~29k lines of duplicate compiled .test.js artifacts is the right call. The behavior-preserving claim is credible given the commit messages and test counts. The backward-compat re-export surface in constants.ts is a good pattern.

Issues

Blocking: CI Failures

Two checks are currently failing:

  • Playwright — component tests are red. Must be green before merge.
  • lint-and-validate — Biome is flagging something. The build passes so this is likely a format/lint issue in one of the new files.

Bug: Missing Verification import in CitationComponentBehavior.test.tsx

src/__tests__/CitationComponentBehavior.test.tsx uses the Verification type at lines 47, 55, 60, 65 but never imports it — only Citation is imported:

Stale canonical-exports.md entry

Line 112 of docs/agents/canonical-exports.md still points openedViaKeyboardRef to src/react/Citation.tsx, but the ref now lives in src/react/useKeyboardOpenTracking.ts (extracted in this PR). Update the canonical location or remove the entry — it's an internal ref returned by a hook, not a public export.

PopoverContentRenderer.tsx — inline import() types in interface

Lines 14–16 use inline dynamic import expressions inside the interface body:

Valid TypeScript, but inconsistent with the rest of the codebase. Prefer top-level import type statements for readability and tooling consistency.

jsonRepair.ts — bracket counting ignores string contents

The missing-bracket repair (lines 131–147) counts raw {/} occurrences across the entire string, including inside JSON string values. Input like {"key": "value {{{{"} would miscount opens vs closes and append spurious closing braces.

In practice this is rarely triggered by real LLM output, but a comment noting the limitation (or only applying this pass after an initial JSON.parse failure) would make the heuristic intent explicit.

Minor: No tests for citationPopoverStore

The simplest new module (30 lines, pure pub/sub) has no dedicated tests. Three cases worth adding:

  • Multiple subscribers all receive the announcement
  • Unsubscribe removes the listener
  • Announcing with no subscribers does not throw

Positives

  • useKeyboardOpenTracking — The rAF-based inert cleanup is correct: cancelAnimationFrame fires before the inerted-elements teardown, preventing the race where cleanup runs before the portal is mounted. The A.5.1/A.5.2 comments are the right level of detail.
  • useSpinnerStage — The setState-during-render pattern and React Compiler opt-out rationale are well-documented. Good call isolating this from the parent.
  • proofImageSecurity.ts — Iterative decoding, Unicode lookalike dot rejection, null-byte checks, and the length guard before decodeURIComponent are solid. The blob: and localhost allowances are correctly scoped.
  • keyholeGeometry.ts — The load-bearing invariant comment on projectKeyholeDisplayedWidth (the Math.min(1, ...) clamp preventing phantom upscaling) is exactly the kind of non-obvious constraint that belongs in source.
  • .gitignore — Ignoring compiled *.test.js artifacts is the correct fix for the double-run problem.
  • normalizeCitations relocation — Correct: CLI-specific utility belongs in src/cli/, not src/utils/.
  • New TypeScript tests — The computeEvidenceCropLayout tests with exact rect values are useful regression anchors. cdnPopover.test.tsx source-invariant checks are a smart way to lock structural assumptions about cdn.ts.

P2 Badge Decode escaped DeepText lines before hydration

When raw pages are passed through wrapCitationPrompt() or CLI re-tagging, this now serializes text like AT&T and < as AT&amp;T / &lt;, but parseDeepTextPageLines() later only strips tags and never decodes those entities before hydrating source_context. Citations on tagged lines containing &, <, or > will therefore send escaped text to verification/display and fail to match the original source; either keep line text unescaped as before or decode entities when parsing DeepText lines.

P2 Badge Preserve marker-only DeepText hydration

deepTextPromptPortion is still accepted as a flat stream of <page_number_N_index_I> markers plus line tags, and the previous parser sliced content between those start markers. extractDeepTextPageBlocks() only returns balanced <page>...</page> blocks, so older/custom summaries with start tags but no closing tags now leave pageBlocks empty, skip the raw-pages branch because pages is null, and return an empty line map; deepcitation hydrate then misses every citation from those summaries. Please keep a marker-based fallback when no closed page blocks are found.

For tagged pages that contain blank rows between sparse <line id> markers, this increments currentLineId before dropping the empty text, so blanks consume line IDs. The old hydrator filtered blank rows before assigning inferred IDs, and denseAnnotatePage() also documents that blank lines should not advance the counter; now a citation to the first nonblank row after a blank can hydrate from the wrong line. Move the empty-text check before carrying/incrementing the ID, or only advance for nonblank rows.

When an LLM or UI-shaped payload emits a numeric page alias such as pageNumber: 0/page: 0 for the first page, this now stores the raw number because formatDeepTextPageId(0) returns undefined; later citationDataToCitation() calls normalizeDeepTextPageId() on that number and drops pageNumber/startPageId entirely. The previous normalization clamped numeric page IDs to page 1, so first-page numeric aliases regress; keep that clamp or make the DeepText normalizer accept numeric page values.

Pure formatting pass over the evidence-geometry refactor: JSX 4->2 space
indentation and line wrapping in the react/testing showcase harnesses,
import ordering across cli/parsing/drawing, and single-line collapse of
the DeepText page-id description constants. No behavior change; biome
check is clean on the result.

The CT build (playwright-ct) and rollup fail to parse 30 committed .js files
that contain raw JSX: a .js extension disables JSX parsing, so Vite reports
'JSX syntax is disabled' (CI's rollup surfaced it as a parse error on the first
graph node, CitationAnnotationOverlay.tsx). All 35 removed .js files are stale
compiled doubles of authoritative .ts/.tsx sources; resolveJsToTs maps .js
imports back to the sources. Extends the existing .test.js gitignore rule so the
doubles do not return. Fixes the pre-existing playwright failure on main.

lint (biome ci ./src) clean; 2729 unit tests pass; 328 CT tests pass.
