Follow-up to #86.

📝 Summary

Fresh legacy Fawaz fiat charts now try the preferred source once after upgrading. Failed refreshes retain valid observations and their original fetch time. Shared validation rejects wrong-range dates, post-fetch points, duplicate daily/monthly observations and current-month All samples, while retaining legitimate flat prices and publication gaps.

Concurrent phone/widget loads now preserve and return valid preferred-source or newer history written while another request was running. Successful refreshes still replace unchanged invalid caches, including future-dated records, and allow All history to extend its bundled archive. Failed migration stamps apply only while the originally read record remains unchanged. The main merge preserves hourly intraday expiry and shared latest quotes.

🧪 Validation

  • App, widgets and embedded Watch build passed. Initial app build was about 66 seconds; final incremental app build was 14 seconds.
  • 66 selected iOS native tests, 139 executions including parameterized cases, zero failures/skips. Post-build test session was 11.5 seconds, separate from the 8.2-second native test build.
  • Deterministic regressions fail before the fixes and pass afterward: concurrent preferred/newer writes, unchanged invalid-cache repair, and failed-migration races. Coverage includes caller results, persisted bytes, offline reuse, custom expiry, hourly boundaries and All archive extension.
  • All seven selected phone/widget journeys passed: legacy-cache migration, wrong-date recovery and exact relaunch reuse, real bundled All history, crypto source/restart and non-USD FX notices, medium History display, and simultaneous day/week widget synchronization. Six passed in the 5m14s selected run; an archive modal-transition tap failed, so navigation was stabilized and the unchanged outcome assertions passed in a focused 39-second rerun (38.8-second warm journey), separate from builds. No selected journey remains failed or skipped.
  • Formatting, TypeScript, project structure and independent review passed. No remaining P1/P2 findings. Watch UI was not exercised.
  • CI for this head is queued. Local validation above is complete; the preceding product-code head passed CI planner/tooling, with native CI still running.

Before: valid flat Fawaz cache bypasses the preferred provider

After: legacy source refreshed from the preferred daily provider

A wrong-year cache is replaced with recent observations and retained after relaunch

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved historical currency data reliability by validating saved observations and replacing stale or out-of-range fiat history with recent data when available.
    • Preserved valid cached history when refreshes fail or competing updates occur.
    • Updated eligible legacy fiat history to try the preferred data source while retaining valid saved data if that refresh fails.
    • Clarified that “All” history shows completed months, excluding the current month.
    • Kept valid flat-rate history and saved data when a refresh cannot provide usable replacement data.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance on history ranges, data sources, and valid saved history.

After merging main: repaired preferred-source month survives relaunch

* validate cached and downloaded history with shared date and bucket checks
* refresh legacy fiat sources once while preserving valid offline rates
* cover valid flat timelines, cache corruption and installed-app recovery
* check the abbreviated date through accessibility before visual validation
* remove ambiguous long-date wording from the maintained widget journey

📝 Walkthrough

The change validates cached history against range-specific rules and adds a policy marker for fiat history. The history service coordinates cache reads and writes, including legacy-cache handling after failed refreshes. Unit and E2E tests cover cache validation, repair, source metadata, and persistence after relaunch.

Changes: History Cache Validation and Repair

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache record and validation rules
Domain/ExchangeRates/Sources/ExchangeRates/HistoryCache.swift, Documentation/FeatureMap.md, Domain/ExchangeRates/Tests/ExchangeRatesTests/HistoryCacheValidationTests.swift
A cache record can store a fiat-history policy version. Shared helpers calculate range start dates and validate provider, values, timestamps, ordering, coverage, and date buckets. Documentation and tests describe and check these rules.
History service migration and cache updates
Domain/ExchangeRates/Sources/ExchangeRates/HistoryService.swift, Domain/ExchangeRates/Sources/ExchangeRates/HistoryCache.swift, Domain/ExchangeRates/Sources/ExchangeRates/README.md, Domain/ExchangeRates/Tests/ExchangeRatesTests/HistoryCacheValidationTests.swift, Domain/ExchangeRates/Tests/ExchangeRatesTests/HistoryCacheWriteTests.swift
The service validates cached and fetched series, applies freshness and policy-version checks, and coordinates cache writes. Failed refreshes can preserve valid legacy history while handling concurrent cache changes. Tests cover migration, failures, cancellation, concurrent writes, and invalid downloads.
Seeded history and end-to-end checks
Apps/Currency/App/Sources/Composition/CurrencyE2EStartup.swift, Apps/Currency/Tests/E2E/*
E2E seed data adds the policy marker and uses completed months for All history. E2E tests check legacy and out-of-range cache replacement, persisted source metadata, saved-history details, and behavior after relaunch.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 371ca

The archive E2E journey cannot reach its saved-history checks because its source-label expectation differs from the displayed label. Correct that expectation before relying on this regression check; the evidence identifies no user-facing history-data failure.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in Apps/Currency/App/Sources/Composition/CurrencyE2EStartup.swift: seedHistory now calculates the current month start and the starts of the two prior months, failing with seedVerificationFailed if any boundary is unavailable. For .all, the first point moves from a fixed 60-day lookback to two months before the current month, and the last point moves from one day before now to the previous month start. .yearToDate and other non-day ranges retain their respective start rules.
  • observed — Modified behavior in Apps/Currency/App/Sources/Composition/CurrencyE2EStartup.swift: writeHistory now requires the encoded history to deserialize as a JSON dictionary, adds fiatHistoryPolicyVersion with value 1, and serializes the result with sorted keys before the atomic write. A non-dictionary payload throws seedVerificationFailed; the prior direct JSONEncoder write is removed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in Apps/Currency/Tests/E2E/README.md: The Coverage table adds the history-cache.e2e.ts journey and its documented legacy-cache refresh, out-of-range cache replacement, relaunch persistence, flat-rate validity, and network requirement.
  • observed — Modified behavior in Apps/Currency/Tests/E2E/README.md: The provider-fixture instructions replace cache identity currency-fixtures-v12-shared-quotes with currency-fixtures-v13-history-cache and add that daily fiat fixtures carry the current history-policy marker and All fixtures use completed months.

* resolve history validation and shared quote fixture conflicts
* coordinate migration stamps with successful history writes
* cover concurrent preferred refreshes and exact cache relaunch reuse
* assert combined current and historical source labels
* retain exact persisted observation and contributor checks
* verify expanded archive dates and saved timestamps
* target the provider row when source identifiers repeat on expanded dates
* poll until asynchronous production rates create their cache
* verify the archive chart and scrolled monthly explanation separately

🟡 Minor · Update the All-history accessible-name expectation. · history-archive.e2e.ts:20-21

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the All-history accessible-name expectation.

The All-history path loads Fawaz monthly reference rates with Coin Metrics as the contributor. The UI formats the source disclosure as Fawaz + Coin Metrics · monthly reference rates · GMT, so the current toHaveAccessibleName assertion fails before the remaining checks run.

Suggested fix
-  await expect(source).toHaveAccessibleName('Coin Metrics + Fawaz · GMT');
+  await expect(source).toHaveAccessibleName('Fawaz + Coin Metrics · monthly reference rates · GMT');
