Summary

Fast Fusion wasn't able to render 3D vehicles in its ingame menu, and the minimap could be missing during a cold shader cache. After Claude (Opus 5.5) investigated Fast Fusion's DLSS implementation, it was able to replace it with FSR instead like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Claude (Opus 5.5) also made sure the minimap was entirely visible even with a cold shader cache.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • FSR upscaling can preserve and smooth image transparency, keeping translucent content looking consistent.
    • DLSS now supports same-resolution output, including DLAA-style use.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Temporal upscaling handles standard and reversed depth correctly across FSR and DLSS, and supports additional depth formats.
    • Improved motion-vector and depth handling for DLSS evaluations.
    • Reduced premature asynchronous shader-building skips for render targets that are still being drawn.

The BlitColor overload that takes a raw image view, which draws the
FSR 3.1 and NVIDIA DLSS outputs, never invalidated the scheduler's
state the way BlitImpl does. The game's next draws reused stale dynamic
state and wrote nothing: with FXAA on, Fast Fusion kept showing its
title screen while its menu ran underneath.

Fast Fusion's menus (main menu, Fusion Shop, vehicle select) draw the
vehicles through a DLSS evaluation at the same size (DLAA), in Pure
mode too, and blend its output over the menu by alpha. The network's
passes can't run, so nothing was written and no vehicle showed.

Recognise Fast Fusion's inputs next to Fortune's Weave's: RGBA16F
colour, motion vectors in NDC, standard D24S8 depth and an output the
size of the input. FSR 3.1 now takes standard depth, reversed into an
image of its own first, and carries the colour's alpha to its output,
accumulated along its motion vectors. NVIDIA DLSS is told whether the
depth is inverted. Fast Fusion's network is not translated: compiling
it froze the menu for about 13 seconds and its output then failed the
checks.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (debugging, implementation, message draft)
With asynchronous shaders, a draw whose pipeline isn't built yet is
skipped when depth is on, on the assumption that the game draws it
again next frame. Fast Fusion renders each track from above once, when
a race loads, to make its minimap, and draws its vehicle thumbnails
once too, so before their pipelines were built the minimap outline and
the thumbnails stayed empty for good.

On Switch 2 titles, skip a draw only when the game has been drawing on
that render target (address, size and format) for 60 frames with no
gap over 15, and otherwise wait for the pipeline. The wait is recorded
on the scheduler worker: on a cold shader cache, Fast Fusion hitched
as often as before.

Walkthrough

The changes extend DLSS evaluation detection and temporal-upscale depth handling. They add FSR passes for alpha carry-through and depth reversal, track render-target redraws in the Vulkan pipeline cache, and invalidate scheduler state after explicit-image-view blits.

Changes: Temporal Upscaling and DLSS Evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Depth orientation contract and propagation
src/video_core/rasterizer_interface.h, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_rasterizer.*, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.*, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.h, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_streamline_dlss.*, src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache*
Temporal-upscale interfaces now pass depth orientation through the rasterizer and texture cache to FSR or DLSS. The texture cache accepts additional single-sample depth formats and uses the selected image format when creating depth views. DLSS sets its depthInverted constant from the supplied orientation.
DLSS evaluation detection and fallback
src/video_core/engines/kepler_compute.*
DLSS tracking recognizes additional input formats and same-size output pairs. It records motion scale, depth orientation, optional depth, jitter, and translated-network status. Temporal fallback uses the recorded motion scale, and native tensor emulation also checks translated-network status.
FSR alpha and reverse-depth passes
src/video_core/host_shaders/CMakeLists.txt, src/video_core/host_shaders/fsr3_upscaler_*.comp, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_fsr3_upscaler.*, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.cpp
FSR can reverse standard depth before later passes. When the input color has alpha, the runtime enables the alpha pass, which resolves alpha using motion-reprojected history and writes it alongside the upscaled RGB.

Pipeline Cache Redraw Tracking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track target redraws before asynchronous-build skips
src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_pipeline_cache.*
The cache tracks render-target use by address, dimensions, and format, removes stale records, and checks redraw status before applying existing asynchronous-build skip rules when asynchronous shaders and the native Turing macro engine are active.

Blit Scheduler State

Layer / File(s) Summary
Invalidate scheduler state after explicit-view blits
src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/blit_image.cpp
The explicit-image-view BlitColor overload invalidates scheduler state after recording the blit.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 385fe

The Fast Fusion menu and minimap fix adds redraw tracking that can wrongly skip one-time draws when render targets collide or when the first color attachment is unused. It can also record a draw without a bound pipeline when an asynchronous shader build fails. These issues affect a narrow set of titles and timing windows rather than every user, but they should be fixed before merge.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 385fe

A background rendering failure can now affect more operations without safely stopping the affected draw. The potential impact is incorrect rendering or application instability; a privilege or data-access bypass was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: With asynchronous shaders enabled on the native-Turing path, the new target-history gate allows additional unfinished pipelines into draw preparation. If pipeline creation fails after the initial completion check, the binding callback returns without a valid pipeline, but the independent draw callback remains recorded. This expands a pre-existing failure path to depth-enabled and larger draws previously skipped while building. The source supports possible drawing with stale or absent pipeline state; application or driver consequences remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated reachability is from guest-controlled graphics programs and resource descriptions into the emulator's host GPU command path. The retained concern affects draw-state correctness and failure containment within that path. The inspected evidence does not establish cross-process data access, privilege gain, or effects on other GPU clients.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The newly added shaders use host-selected resource views rather than guest-supplied host handles. Alpha writes are bounded by upscale dimensions, neighborhood reads are clamped, and previous-history sampling is conditional on reset state and valid coordinates. The reverse-depth pass bounds writes by its destination image size.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The explicit-view blit now invalidates cached graphics pipeline, rescaling, descriptor-buffer, and command-buffer state after recording its commands. This makes subsequent draws restore state instead of relying on state displaced by the blit. The upscaler output is separately transitioned back to GENERAL for reuse.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Fast Fusion: Menu Vehicle Rendering and Minimap Fixes" is related to the changeset. The objectives and commits describe fixing missing 3D vehicles in Fast Fusion menus and a minimap that can be missing with a cold shader cache. The changes in the summaries cover FSR 3.1 and DLSS handling of depth and alpha for Fast Fusion's menu vehicle inputs, which matches the vehicle rendering part. The summaries do not mention the minimap fix directly, and the pipeline-cache changes that support it are only partly described. The title covers the main intent, so it passes.

Use an equality-checked target key.

The shifted height and format bits overlap, so distinct targets can share a key. For example, the same address and width with 1080/A8B8G8R8_UNORM and 1272/A8B8G8R8_SRGB produce the same key. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

If memory is reused this way, the new target inherits the old target’s redraw history. A one-time draw can then be skipped. Store the full fields in a key with equality comparison.

Track the active color attachments.

If rt[0] has format NONE but rt[1] is active, this selects the depth registers instead. The texture cache supports that attachment configuration. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

When depth is disabled, unrelated draws can share the same stale depth key. A new one-time color draw can then inherit redraw history and be skipped. Track the active output attachments and skip only when their redraw status supports it.

Synchronize pipeline publication before accepting unfinished draws.

If the build finishes between the two is_built checks in GraphicsPipeline::ConfigureImpl and ConfigureDraw, the second check skips the mutex wait. Both checks use relaxed loads, so they do not publish the builder’s writes to pipeline to the scheduler worker. This creates a data race when the worker reads the pipeline. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use acquire/release publication or synchronize every path that reads the completed pipeline.

Cancel the queued draw if pipeline creation fails.

This branch now accepts unfinished depth draws. If the asynchronous build fails after GraphicsPipeline::ConfigureImpl checks it, the scheduled bind returns without binding a pipeline, but the separately scheduled draw still executes. It can use the previous pipeline or issue an invalid Vulkan draw. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Propagate build failure to the scheduled draw so it is not recorded into the command buffer.
