vulkan: back sparse terrain arrays at low detail without sparse residency - #570
I have read and followed the Coding Guidelines to the best of my ability.
I have put [HUMANMADE] in the title if the pr was human-mande
Summary
What does this PR change and why?
Mario Kart World drew its world (road, cliffs, walls, trees) with a strong pink tint on macOS. The world's terrain materials come from three 8192x8192x68 sparse virtual texture arrays (two ASTC 8x8, 1.45 GB each, and one BC6H, 5.8 GB). The game streams into them through its sparse tile mappings: all 68 layers hold the low mip levels (1024x1024 and below, 0.4 MiB a layer in ASTC) and four layers hold full detail. The renderer never uploaded any of it on MoltenVK, because the upload for these arrays exists only for hosts with sparse residency (SparseLayers). They were created as sparse images, which MoltenVK accepts and then gives full Metal textures on first use (the arrays took about 9.9 GB, past the 16 GB of the Mac), and nothing was ever uploaded, so they sampled as undefined or zero texels, and terrain shaded from them came out pink. The same holds for a stand-in image of a smaller size: it makes no difference what size an array nobody uploads into has.
A color array of 256 MiB or more in a Switch 2 sparse region, in a format the host samples natively, on a device without sparse residency (CompactLayers) is now backed with only its low mip levels, the first levels that fit 256 MiB (levels 2+ for the ASTC arrays, 3+ for the BC6H one: 90 MiB each), using the existing trimmed-level machinery (host_level_offset). Every layer is uploaded when the image is first used and only the written layers after that, reading just the levels the host keeps from guest memory (UnswizzleImage takes a first level). Normalized coordinates and derivative LOD address the trimmed image correctly; the four full-detail layers sample at 1/4 and 1/8 of their resolution.
This needed a change in MemoryAllocator::CreateImage, which called an image "huge" (never backed) past 2^28 texels, whatever the format. It now counts bytes, with compressed formats at their size and everything else at 4 bytes a texel, so the limit for uncompressed images stays 1 GiB and a compressed image that fits is backed.
Hosts with sparse residency are unaffected by the new path: they take the SparseLayers path, which creates these arrays unbacked.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of very large layered textures on systems without 2D sparse residency, while preserving available mip levels and refreshing only layers that have changed.
Large texture uploads now account for omitted mip levels, and memory estimates reflect the smaller host-side images.
Image allocation decisions now account for texture format storage requirements, improving handling of oversized textures across formats.
Texture data conversion can now process only the retained mip levels.
…ency
Mario Kart World drew its world (road, cliffs, walls, trees) with a
strong pink tint on macOS. The world's terrain materials come from
three 8192x8192x68 sparse virtual texture arrays (two ASTC 8x8, 1.45 GB
each, and one BC6H, 5.8 GB). The game streams into them through its
sparse tile mappings: all 68 layers hold the low mip levels (1024x1024
and below, 0.4 MiB a layer in ASTC) and four layers hold full detail.
The renderer never uploaded any of it on MoltenVK, because the upload
for these arrays exists only for hosts with sparse residency
(SparseLayers). They were created as sparse images, which MoltenVK
accepts and then gives full Metal textures on first use (the arrays
took about 9.9 GB, past the 16 GB of the Mac), and nothing was ever
uploaded, so they sampled as undefined or zero texels, and terrain
shaded from them came out pink. The same holds for a stand-in image of
a smaller size: it makes no difference what size an array nobody
uploads into has.
A color array of 256 MiB or more in a Switch 2 sparse region, in a
format the host samples natively, on a device without sparse residency
(CompactLayers) is now backed with only its low mip levels, the first
levels that fit 256 MiB (levels 2+ for the ASTC arrays, 3+ for the BC6H
one: 90 MiB each), using the existing trimmed-level machinery
(host_level_offset). Every layer is uploaded when the image is first
used and only the written layers after that, reading just the levels
the host keeps from guest memory (UnswizzleImage takes a first level).
Normalized coordinates and derivative LOD address the trimmed image
correctly; the four full-detail layers sample at 1/4 and 1/8 of their
resolution.
This needed a change in MemoryAllocator::CreateImage, which called an
image "huge" (never backed) past 2^28 texels, whatever the format. It
now counts bytes, with compressed formats at their size and everything
else at 4 bytes a texel, so the limit for uncompressed images stays
1 GiB and a compressed image that fits is backed.
Hosts with sparse residency are unaffected by the new path: they take
the SparseLayers path, which creates these arrays unbacked.
Tested with Mario Kart World on an M3 MacBook Air (16 GB), Hypervisor
backend, Low GPU accuracy, key script through the menus into a race
on Mario Bros. Circuit. Before, the free-roam island's road and walls
were pink in the captures; after, the asphalt is grey and the desert
terracotta in the title scenes and the race start (280 s, 36 frames, no
pink). Process footprint at 240 s fell from 18 GB (21 GB physical) to
12 GB (16-17 GB physical), with the game reaching the race instead of
still being in the menus. Not tested on NVIDIA or AMD, whose arrays do
not go through the new path.

The change adds compact host mip handling for qualifying large layered images. It uploads retained mip levels by layer, widens guest image size calculations, and changes Vulkan image allocation classification to use format-aware size estimates.
Changes: Compact Texture Handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Calculate image sizes and classify large allocations src/video_core/texture_cache/util.*, src/video_core/texture_cache/image_base.h, src/video_core/vulkan_common/vulkan_memory_allocator.cpp, src/video_core/renderer_opengl/gl_texture_cache.cpp, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.cpp
Guest image sizes use 64-bit calculations. Vulkan allocation classification uses a format-aware first-level size estimate and a 1 GiB threshold. Buffer-backed image sizes use explicit u32 casts.
Select and create compact host images src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.cpp, src/video_core/texture_cache/image_base.h
The renderer checks compact-layer eligibility, trims host mip levels to a configurable limit, and marks qualifying backed images with CompactLayers.
Map guest mip ranges to retained host levels src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.cpp, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.h
Image views store host mip offsets and guest mip counts. View mip ranges map to the retained host levels.
Refresh and upload retained mip levels src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache.h, src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache_base.h, src/video_core/texture_cache/util.*
Compact-layer images refresh selected layers in batches of up to 16. Layer uploads and unswizzling process retained mip levels. Compact image size estimates account for omitted levels.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to cb113
Large texture arrays can resolve a descriptor to the wrong layer. Widen the remaining layer-address calculations before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to cb113
The smaller texture backing reduces memory demand, but its batched initialization can issue inconsistent GPU layout transitions. The change also leaves a writeback-policy gap for qualifying writable arrays. These issues could affect rendering-session availability or guest data consistency; a host memory disclosure or privilege escalation has not been established.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: A compact array with more than 16 layers is first uploaded through multiple disjoint batches. The first batch sets the image-wide initialized flag, but transitions only its copied layers. Subsequent batches therefore declare GENERAL as the old layout for layers still in UNDEFINED. Selecting every layer for the initial refresh does not resolve this batching mismatch. The PR newly routes compact-backed arrays through this inconsistent lifecycle, creating driver-dependent rendering or device-failure risk rather than containing failure to one texture.
Medium · architecture · inferred: Compact eligibility does not require read-only usage, yet every actually trimmed compact image inherits a blanket download prohibition through TrimmedLevels. Generic GPU modification and render-target preparation remain permitted. This creates an ownership and writeback-policy gap for native writable arrays that previously received full backing without trimming; it is not limited to huge images whose writes were already unsupported. Actual production use of compact arrays as writable targets remains unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated attackable surface is guest-controlled texture metadata reaching host staging allocations and GPU commands in the rendering session. The layout concern can affect session or device availability. The inspected paths do not establish cross-guest access, credential exposure, or increased host privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A qualifying guest array with more than 16 layers can drive the first-refresh sequence into inconsistent host GPU layout transitions. Driver-dependent failure is a plausible availability outcome; exploitation beyond rendering failure has not been demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The plain compact upload path computes layer addresses with 64-bit arithmetic and sizes staging from the reduced host representation. Guest block reads retain mapped-page handling and zero-fill paths for missing backing; the UnsafeRead name alone does not establish unrestricted host access.
observed — Large guest-resource identity still has narrower consumers: CreateImageView calculates the layer offset as u32, and TryFindBase narrows the address difference before checking the widened guest range. These operations predate the PR. They leave large-array aliasing uncertainty, but the inspected evidence does not prove a new host memory-safety violation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The allocator now estimates compressed first-level storage by block size rather than raw texel count. Actual allocation still goes through the existing budgeted allocation, relaxed and host-memory retries, and unbacked fallback sequence. The estimate is therefore a routing policy, not a complete resource-isolation limit.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make initialization tracking match subresource scope, or transition the entire compact backing once before disjoint uploads. Separately, define and enforce whether compact arrays are read-only or provide a retained-mip writeback contract before permitting GPU modifications.

Explanation
The title names the main change: sparse terrain arrays are now backed at low mip detail on hosts without sparse residency, via the CompactLayers path. The raw summary confirms this, including the CompactLayers path for large sparse 2D color arrays, host mip offsets, and 64-bit guest-size accounting. The title is specific, one sentence, and free of noise. It leaves out the 64-bit sizing and compressed-format sizing changes, which is acceptable because it does not need to cover every detail.

Nice work identifying the terrain arrays (8192x8192x68 ASTC/BC6H)!
Note that this also directly affects AMD GPUs on Windows (e.g. RX 5700 / RX 6000 / RX 7000 series). On AMD proprietary drivers, CanUseUnbackedSparseImages() returns false (due to driver GPU hangs on sampling unbound memory), which causes UsesSparseLayers() to evaluate to false. As a result, AMD cards cannot take the SparseLayers path either, leading to missing terrain materials (black patches / missing scenery in Mario Kart World).
However, in UsesCompactLayers():
if (device.IsSparseResidencyImage2DSupported() || ...)
AMD drivers DO support IsSparseResidencyImage2DSupported(), but they cannot use unbacked sparse images (!device.CanUseUnbackedSparseImages()). Therefore, AMD gets excluded from BOTH UsesSparseLayers AND UsesCompactLayers!
If you update the condition to:
if ((device.IsSparseResidencyImage2DSupported() && device.CanUseUnbackedSparseImages()) || ...)
then AMD (and any other driver that cannot safely leave sparse images unbound) can also take this CompactLayers path, fixing the black terrain and missing road/scenery on AMD Windows as well!

…unsafe
AMD's drivers report sparse residency but do not survive sampling unbound
memory, so CanUseUnbackedSparseImages() is false there and the terrain
arrays could not take the SparseLayers path. UsesCompactLayers() only
checked for sparse residency, so AMD missed it as well and the 5.8 GB
BC6H array stayed unbacked. Gate CompactLayers on the complement of the
SparseLayers device check instead, so a device that cannot leave these
arrays unbound gets the backed low-detail copy.
The two ASTC arrays are unchanged on hosts without native ASTC: they take
the GPU decode path with trimmed levels.

Use a 64-bit guest size for large arrays.
The 5.8 GB array described by UsesCompactLayers overflows this u32 multiplication. ImageBase::guest_size_bytes also stores the result as u32. Registration and dirty tracking then cover only the wrapped range, so writes to later layers do not refresh the compact image.
Use a 64-bit size through calculation, registration, and dirty tracking. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Sampled views of an image that keeps only its mip levels from
host_level_offset on already map their guest levels onto the host image
(HostRange). Views made through ImageView::MakeView (the typeless
storage view and the depth, stencil and color views blits use) took the
guest range as is, so on a trimmed image they could name levels the
host image does not have. They now go through HostRange too.

The huge-image check counted ASTC at a whole number of bits a texel,
rounded up (10x10 at 2 bits instead of 1.28, 12x12 at 1 instead of
0.89), so some ASTC images that fit 1 GiB were never backed. Count the
first level's bytes from its blocks instead: ASTC and BCn by block
shape and block size, anything else at 4 bytes a texel as before.

CalculateGuestSizeInBytes multiplied the layer stride by the layer
count in 32 bits and ImageBase::guest_size_bytes stored it in 32 bits.
Title 1's 8192x8192x68 BC6H terrain array is 5.8 GB, so its size wrapped
to about 1.5 GB: the image was registered, and its CPU writes tracked,
for only its first 17 or so layers, and writes to the later layers never
marked them dirty for the compact (or sparse) layer uploads. Both are
64-bit now; everything they feed already takes a u64 or size_t.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Keep layer address calculations 64-bit.
For an array larger than 4 GiB, ImageBase::TryFindBase casts the address difference to u32 before checking it against the widened guest_size_bytes. TextureCache::CreateImageView also calculates BaseLayer() * layer_stride in u32. A descriptor for a layer beyond 4 GiB can therefore resolve to an earlier layer or use the wrong array base. Widen both offsets before arithmetic and range checks. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
