macro stack fast path in High accuracy + Preflushable readback throttle experiments (measured) - #686
Two env-gated changes from a measured Ocarina of Time GPU-thread performance investigation (Ryzen 7 9800X3D / RTX 3080, Accurate mode, 1x, ~30 FPS in the forest vistas). Both default OFF; the measurements below are the real payload.
1. EDEN_NX2_MACRO_STACK_HIGH=1 — macro stack fast path in High accuracy
ProcessMacro's stack fast path is currently Low-accuracy-only; High keeps the
vector + segment + RefreshParameters plumbing for the re-fetch-at-use semantic.
OoT makes ~900k single-run macro calls a second (measured with EDEN_NX2_MME_RECORD: avg 2.9 param words, 15 calls per draw, 2,360 draws per
frame in a vista). An arrival-time snapshot satisfies that semantic for every
macro the title runs, so the flag takes the stack path in High too.
In forest scenes, Preflushable ranges download at 1.9 GiB/s in 135k copies/s
(a fence per compute dispatch x marked ranges) while the guest CPU reads
GPU-written memory ~571 times a second (single pages). The flag commits marked
ranges once per frame instead, at region-uniform timing. Four variants were
tested against the eager scheme:
variant
visual result
plain per-frame
tonemap washed out
size-thresholded
half-fresh snapshot, partial washout
region-uniform
gamma oscillating between two states
region-uniform + read-trap force-flush
constant gamma flicker
The image path's reader holds a freshness contract tighter than one frame, and
the eager scheme turns out to be FPS-neutral (the fencing thread is ~5% busy
while it writes them back), so correctness wins: the flag stays default-off and
the code is kept as a documented negative result.
Measurements that may be useful beyond these two flags
EDEN_NX2_GPU_PROFILE=1 costs 27% of the GPU thread on Linux: perf puts WallClock::GetTimeNS as the Experimental NS2 support and accumulated GPU fixes #1 symbol (zone scopes run ~150k/s). Removing it
from a heavy-vista run took the frame time 40 ms -> 33 ms on its own. Worth a
cheaper clock or fewer scope sites.
The heavy vista is latency-bound, not throughput-bound: GPU thread <=60%,
six emulated cores ~30%, ~30 FPS. The frame time is the serial chain
game CPU -> command list -> GPU thread -> host GPU -> fence -> syncpoint ->
game CPU, with a fence signaled per compute dispatch.
perf hot map (without the app profiler): memory-manager page walks ~15%
(MaxContinuousRangeUncached, GpuToCpuAddress, GetPointer), lock overhead
~8% (SpinRecursiveMutex contention between the GPU thread and the fencing
thread), method dispatch ~10%, macro execution ~5% (already JIT'd).
Macro memoization is a dead end for this title: top macro (22% of calls) has
a genuinely dynamic parameter (3,326 distinct values in one position over 44k
calls); weighted LRU-4 hit rate ~35%.
Added configurable options to defer eligible GPU buffer downloads until the data is read. Smaller updates continue to be handled at each fence, and asynchronous downloads are unchanged.
Added an optional GPU macro-processing path for certain high-accuracy workloads; existing processing behavior remains in other cases.
Improved GPU memory range lookup performance by increasing the size of its lookup cache.
Updated buffer cleanup thresholds for native-tiling runtimes to respond to cached buffer usage.
Note on the removed EDEN_NX2_PREFLUSH_PER_FRAME experiment (dropped in a later commit): it stayed FPS-neutral here — the eager per-fence download leaves the fencing thread near 5% busy, so there was little to win — and every readback-throttle variant damaged the image on Ocarina of Time: draining once per frame washed the colors out, splitting small/large ranges gave half-fresh snapshots, throttling whole regions made the screen gamma bistable, and force-flushing on a trapped read flickered constantly. The reader's freshness requirement is tighter than one frame, so the eager per-fence download stays. Kept here as a note so nobody re-walks that path.
…tle + macro stack path
EDEN_NX2_PREFLUSH_PER_FRAME=1 (default off): commit Preflushable buffer
readbacks once per frame instead of at every compute fence. Ocarina of Time
in forest scenes was copied back at 1.9 GiB/s in 135k copies/s (a fence per
compute dispatch x marked ranges), while its guest CPU read GPU-written
memory ~571 times a second. Throttle variants tested: plain per-frame
(washed out the tonemap), size-thresholded (half-fresh snapshot, partial
washout), region-uniform (gamma oscillating between two states), trap-armed
(constant gamma flicker). All broke the image path's reader, whose freshness
contract is tighter than one frame; the eager scheme is FPS-neutral (the
fencing thread is 5% busy) so correctness wins. Code kept for a documented
negative result and future work.
EDEN_NX2_MACRO_STACK_HIGH=1 (default off): take ProcessMacro's stack fast
path in accurate GPU mode as well. The title makes ~900k single-run macro
calls a second; the vector/segment/RefreshParameters plumbing exists for the
re-fetch-at-use semantic, which an arrival-time snapshot satisfies for every
macro it runs.
Measured on Ryzen 7 9800X3D / RTX 3080, Accurate mode, 1x, FSR replacement:
EDEN_NX2_GPU_PROFILE's zone clock (WallClock::GetTimeNS, ~150k reads/s)
costs 27% of the GPU thread on Linux — the heavy vista is latency-bound
(GPU thread 60%, cores 30%, ~30 fps), with memory-manager page walks ~15%,
lock overhead ~8%, method dispatch ~10% of the thread as the next levers.

BufferCache updates its preflush and garbage-collection policies. ProcessMacro adds an environment-controlled stack-copy option for eligible high-accuracy calls. Memory management updates page-table serials and expands and instruments the MaxContinuousRange cache.
Changes: GPU Buffer Preflush
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Queue and evaluate buffer preflushes src/video_core/buffer_cache/buffer_cache_base.h, src/video_core/buffer_cache/buffer_cache.h
When EDEN_NX2_LAZY_PREFLUSH begins with 1, QueueGpuWrite arms read traps for the full GPU-written range instead of queuing fence downloads. GetFlushArea skips the preemptive fast path when lazy preflush is enabled. On native-tiling runtimes, TickFrame bases garbage collection on cached buffer bytes: it does not collect below 512 MiB and uses aggressive collection at 1 GiB or more.
Macro Stack-Copy Option
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Enable stack copying at high accuracy src/video_core/engines/maxwell_3d.cpp
When EDEN_NX2_MACRO_STACK_HIGH begins with 1, eligible final macro calls at high GPU accuracy can use the stack-copy path. Existing call conditions remain in effect.
Memory Range Cache
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Update page-table serials and instrument the range cache src/video_core/memory_manager.cpp
PageTableOp and BigPageTableOp increment map_serial before modifying page-table state. MaxContinuousRange uses a 1024-entry per-thread cache instead of 64 entries. When EDEN_NX2_MEMSTATS is set, it tracks queries, hits, misses, and page-table serial changes, and logs every 500,000 hits.
Both new behaviors are opt-in through environment flags. Before merging, fix the dirty-macro stack path, which can corrupt memory or crash, and the stale read-trap bookkeeping in lazy preflush mode, which can let the CPU read stale guest memory. The statistics logging and counting issues are minor.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 53792
An opt-in optimization can violate host-memory safety while processing guest-controlled commands. A separate opt-in policy can let later reads observe stale data. Both switches default off, substantially limiting normal exposure.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: With EDEN_NX2_MACRO_STACK_HIGH enabled in High accuracy, an eligible call executes from stack parameters while macro_params remains empty. Dirty-segment state remains active until after execution. Native execution invokes RefreshParameters, and its implementation copies segment data into macro_params without sizing it. A dirty call with a nonzero segment can therefore write through invalid vector storage, potentially crashing or corrupting the host process. The 64-word stack bound does not validate this separate write destination. The base excluded High accuracy from this branch.
Medium · reliability · inferred: When lazy preflush is enabled and asynchronous downloads are disabled, a GPU write arms read traps instead of queuing a fence download. A dirty CPU read disarms the actual trap and caches the synchronously flushed area, but neither the dirty GetFlushArea branch nor download completion removes the buffer-cache trap record. The next write covering the same pages can hit ArmReadTraps' already-covered return, skipping both protection and generation invalidation. Subsequent reads can then bypass synchronization indefinitely until another invalidation occurs. This breaks the ownership handoff that replaces eager downloads; the base instead queued subsequent writes to preflushable pages.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated conditional exposure is within the emulator process handling guest commands. Enabling the affected macro path requires host-side environment configuration and High accuracy. Invalid refresh storage can affect host-process memory, but arbitrary execution, cross-process access, or a guest ability to enable the switch was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The new conditional attack path is guest macro input to stack dispatch, followed by execution-time refresh into the empty host vector. The supplied security section retains no findings, but independent source inspection identifies this regression. Its runtime exploitability remains unproven.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Stack selection preserves the complete-call, empty-accumulator, 64-word, and override checks. Refresh additionally checks dirty state and GPU accuracy, but has no corresponding check that its vector destination is populated. Those retained controls therefore do not enforce parameter-storage ownership on the newly enabled path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The first dirty CPU read waits for synchronization before returning. The lazy-policy failure is instead in recovery to the next write/read cycle: cached trap coverage suppresses the operation that would invalidate the completed read area.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define one explicit owner for active macro parameters so refresh either targets valid writable storage or is deliberately excluded for immutable snapshots. Likewise, retire trap bookkeeping when a read consumes the trap so every later GPU write can rearm protection and invalidate cached read areas.

Keep dirty macro parameters on the vector path.
If a macro header ends one command entry and its complete argument run arrives in a dirty next entry, macro_params is empty and this condition selects the stack path. MacroEngine::Execute then calls RefreshParameters(). The refresh writes through macro_params[0], although the vector is empty. This can corrupt memory or crash the emulator. Require !current_macro_dirty for the new High-accuracy stack path so dirty calls retain the existing vector and re-fetch behavior. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Ocarina of Time binds more distinct (address, size) pairs than the 64-entry
direct-mapped cache held: a vista run thrashed 22% of ~85k queries/s with a
stable page table (785 serial changes, all at boot), each miss re-walking up
to 8 MiB. 1024 entries cut the steady-state miss rate to ~6% (~3.3x fewer
walks, ~2.5% of the GPU thread). EDEN_NX2_MEMSTATS=1 logs per-thread
queries/hits/misses/serial changes every 500k queries.

Track the last serial separately for each memory manager.
If one thread queries two memory managers with different stable serials, each switch increments stat_serials without a page-table change. GPU channels can reference distinct memory managers. Key the previous serial by unique_identifier so the reported count measures remaps rather than manager switches. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Log after 500,000 queries, not 500,000 hits.
If queries repeatedly miss, this condition never logs the counters. That prevents EDEN_NX2_MEMSTATS from reporting the miss-heavy workload it is meant to diagnose. Move the log condition to a path shared by hits and misses, and use stat_queries as the interval counter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clear consumed trap bookkeeping for non-preemptive reads
With lazy preflush or a qualifying per-frame write, a second GPU write can skip ArmReadTraps because the first read left the range recorded. A later CPU read can then return old bytes without flushing. Clear the range when the first read consumes the trap.

Keep fence downloads when reads cannot be intercepted
With async downloads and reactive flushing off, EDEN_NX2_READ_TRAPS=0 leaves Dynarmic fastmem reads unprotected. Lazy mode and qualifying per-frame writes can then skip the fence download, so a guest read can return stale bytes. Route preflushable writes through the fence-download path when neither read-interception mechanism is available.

It doesn't look like the EDEN_NX2_PREFLUSH_PER_FRAME=1 flag adds much value here as you mention it stays FPS-neutral and produces visual glitches.
EDEN_NX2_MACRO_STACK_HIGH=1 looks more promising. Macro execution only covers about 5% of the profile with it already being JIT. Can you provide me with benchmarks so that I know what to expect specifically?
Did this solve a crash for you? Give me more context.
Yeah, I'm fine dropping the preflush flag — every version of that experiment I tried ended up making the picture worse in one way or another (colors looking washed out, brightness jumping back and forth), and it never bought any real speed. I'll take it out and just leave a note in the description that it was tried and didn't work, so nobody spends time on it again.
The macro stack one didn't fix a crash — nothing was crashing for me. What it does is make each macro call take a copy of its arguments the moment it arrives, so nothing can change them while the macro is still running. It just behaves more consistently, and it skips a bit of bookkeeping on every call. For scale: Ocarina of Time fires close to a million of these calls a second in busy scenes, but they're only around 5% of the total work — same as what you're seeing — so realistically the savings are a few percent at best. I haven't done a careful side-by-side speed test with it on and off yet. I can run one and share the actual numbers before this gets merged, if that's useful.
If it makes the PR easier to review, I'm also happy to trim it down to just the macro stack change and the lookup cache — the two pieces that clearly help.
Per review: the flag stayed FPS-neutral (the eager path's fencing thread sits
near 5% busy) and every throttle variant damaged the image on Ocarina of Time
(per-frame: washed out; size-split: half-fresh snapshots; region-uniform: gamma
bistable; trap-armed force-flush: constant flicker). The negative result stays
documented in the PR description; the eager per-fence download remains.

Rearm pages after a reactive read in lazy preflush mode.
When EDEN_NX2_LAZY_PREFLUSH=1 and asynchronous downloads are off, a reactive read disarms the memory trap but leaves the page in read_trapped_ranges. A later GPU write can skip rearming and the generation bump. The CPU can then reuse its cached read area and read stale guest memory.

The serial the MaxContinuousRange cache invalidates on bumped after the
tables changed: a reader walking concurrently could cache a torn result
under a still-valid serial. The ops now bump first, so a reader either sees
the old serial with old tables or retries. (The GpuToCpuAddress cache and
its seqlock read live on the perf branch this PR does not include.)

…glantine-Community#686)
Null mod roots (e.g. no load dir) were dereferenced in ApplyLayeredFS and
PatchExeFS, and GetOrCreateDirectoryRelative was called on null roots.
Skip missing roots instead. Needed for the NUP RomFS LayeredFS path in Eglantine-Community#727.

Two env-gated changes from a measured Ocarina of Time GPU-thread performance investigation (Ryzen 7 9800X3D / RTX 3080, Accurate mode, 1x, ~30 FPS in the forest vistas). Both default OFF; the measurements below are the real payload.
1.
EDEN_NX2_MACRO_STACK_HIGH=1— macro stack fast path in High accuracyProcessMacro's stack fast path is currently Low-accuracy-only; High keeps thevector + segment +
RefreshParametersplumbing for the re-fetch-at-use semantic.OoT makes ~900k single-run macro calls a second (measured with
EDEN_NX2_MME_RECORD: avg 2.9 param words, 15 calls per draw, 2,360 draws perframe in a vista). An arrival-time snapshot satisfies that semantic for every
macro the title runs, so the flag takes the stack path in High too.
2.
EDEN_NX2_PREFLUSH_PER_FRAME=1— Preflushable readback throttle (negative result)In forest scenes, Preflushable ranges download at 1.9 GiB/s in 135k copies/s
(a fence per compute dispatch x marked ranges) while the guest CPU reads
GPU-written memory ~571 times a second (single pages). The flag commits marked
ranges once per frame instead, at region-uniform timing. Four variants were
tested against the eager scheme:
The image path's reader holds a freshness contract tighter than one frame, and
the eager scheme turns out to be FPS-neutral (the fencing thread is ~5% busy
while it writes them back), so correctness wins: the flag stays default-off and
the code is kept as a documented negative result.
Measurements that may be useful beyond these two flags
EDEN_NX2_GPU_PROFILE=1costs 27% of the GPU thread on Linux:perfputsWallClock::GetTimeNSas the Experimental NS2 support and accumulated GPU fixes #1 symbol (zone scopes run ~150k/s). Removing itfrom a heavy-vista run took the frame time 40 ms -> 33 ms on its own. Worth a
cheaper clock or fewer scope sites.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Note on the removed
EDEN_NX2_PREFLUSH_PER_FRAMEexperiment (dropped in a later commit): it stayed FPS-neutral here — the eager per-fence download leaves the fencing thread near 5% busy, so there was little to win — and every readback-throttle variant damaged the image on Ocarina of Time: draining once per frame washed the colors out, splitting small/large ranges gave half-fresh snapshots, throttling whole regions made the screen gamma bistable, and force-flushing on a trapped read flickered constantly. The reader's freshness requirement is tighter than one frame, so the eager per-fence download stays. Kept here as a note so nobody re-walks that path.
