Summary

When an atomic compare-exchange fails, it returns the value it found in memory. The patch saves that value and uses it as the expected value on the next try.

This ports jpkto’s fix from [Lichii PR #206](zortos293/Lichii#206). The new test checks the generated SPIR-V for the storage float atomic retry path.

Type of change

    • Bug fix

Testing

    • Tested on Windows

The regression test fails on stock Eglantine nx2 at 0857e8b4a7. I ran the patched atomic retry and global memory tests and got 656 passing assertions across three separate test cases.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved the reliability of shader atomic updates for packed half-precision and 32-bit values. When an update must retry, it now uses the latest value returned by the previous attempt rather than relying on an earlier value. This helps ensure updates are based on the most recent data and reduces the chance of inconsistent results during concurrent shader operations.

Retargeted to nx2-experimental for pre-build testing. It will be promoted to nx2 after validation.

Walkthrough

SPIR-V CAS loops now use compare-exchange results as expected values for subsequent attempts. The half-vector storage-buffer CAS calls specify U32 memory values. New tests check emitted SPIR-V retry instructions for float32 and float16x2 storage atomics.

Changes: SPIR-V atomic retry handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
CAS loop emission

CasLoop uses word-sized expected values for packed-half and U32 memory operations. The storage-buffer write CAS loop retains each compare-exchange result for the next attempt. Half-vector add, min, and max calls now specify U32 memory values.

The test target includes checks for emitted compare-exchange, expected-value load, and store relationships in float32 and float16x2 storage atomics.

The changed retry paths have no established production failure, but some paths remain untested and the new regression check can miss an overwritten expected value. These are bounded test-coverage risks suitable for owner follow-up.

Add coverage for the other changed CAS loops.

The test covers only the scalar storage-float path. Add returned-word retry checks for the packed-half branch, shared-memory and storage increment/decrement paths, and DefineWriteStorageCasLoopFunction.

For the storage-write case, enable uses_int8 or uses_int16 and disable direct access for that width.

Use U32 for the storage load and compare-exchange in the packed-half
add, min, and max helpers. Keep the arithmetic in F16x2 and reuse
the returned U32 word when the exchange fails.

Add regression coverage for all three operations. Their generated
SPIR-V passes spirv-val for Vulkan 1.1. I ran the atomic retry and
global memory tests and got 3738 passing assertions in 4 test cases.

Addresses the packed-half review finding in Eglantine-Community#716.

Check that the returned word reaches the next retry.

An intervening store can overwrite the returned word without failing these assertions. A fresh memory load may return a stale value. Check that the failure back-edge reaches the next comparator load without another store to the expected-value variable.

I saw that 18106bdf49 landed in nx2 with the compare-exchange retry fix, the packed-half correction, and tests for the generated helpers. #716 now has merge conflicts against nx2-experimental.

The test in #716 also emits actual packed-half add, min, and max calls. I ran the patched tests locally and got 3,738 passing assertions across four test cases.

Would you like a test-only follow up based on current nx2 for that call-site coverage, or should I close #716 as superseded?
