Use Switchbrew's official names for Switch 2 HLE services and commands - #756
Renames Switch 2 HLE services, interfaces and commands to the names Switchbrew documents, so the code matches the official nn:: names. Behavior is unchanged except for the chat:u and nvdrv items noted below.
Commits, oldest first:
am: use Switchbrew's names for the Switch 2 commands
hid: use Switchbrew's names for the commands added for Switch 2 titles
chat: return chat:u's objects and events instead of empty replies
audio: name the Switch 2 audio sessions after their nn:: interfaces
nvdrv: name the Switch 2 AS ioctl 0x0B after NVGPU_AS_IOCTL_GET_SYNC_RO_MAP
am: answer IsTensorRtSupported with true
hid: answer IsOunceVibrationDeviceMounted like IsVibrationDeviceMounted
chat: implement the chat:u calls Switchbrew documents
hid: read back the Switch 2 scene id and mouse pointer ranges
am: give IApplicationProxy 40 its IPerformanceFunctions
am: keep the overclock request on the applet
hid: keep scene ids and pointer ranges per application, log 213 once
chat: use StubReplyEvent for the events that never fire
Notes
The branch was rebased onto the current nx2. The audio session rename conflicted with the Star Fox audio change (587633d). That change was replayed by hand onto the renamed classes, so the audio header now has the new names and the Star Fox code.
The Star Fox commit reflowed some comments in the audio header. The renamed version keeps the earlier comment wrapping.
Testing
Syntax-only MSVC check of the nine changed .cpp files (application_functions, application_proxy, application_proxy_service, common_state_getter, self_controller, audio, friend, hid_server, nvhost_as_gpu): all pass.
Not done: full build and link, and no runtime test.
Renames only, no behavior change. Only entries the Switch 2 work added;
commands upstream Eden also lists keep their names.
- ISelfController 22-24: GetScreenShotAcdIndex,
GetScreenShotApparentPlatform, GetScreenShotApplicationProperty.
- ISelfController 2000: GetGraphicsSupervisor; 2100-2401:
SetRecordingLayerEnabled, SetSharingLayerEnabled,
SetCopyrightLayerEnabled, SetRtcScreenSharingAudioEnabled,
SetStreamPlayMirroringAudioEnabled.
- ICommonStateGetter 650/651: Begin/EndUsingCameraResource; 2000:
SetRtcModeChangedMessageEnabled; 2010: GetCurrentDisplayLayoutRatio.
- IApplicationFunctions 230: IsTensorRtSupported.
- appletOE 10: OpenApplicationProxy2; 2000: OpenCompatApplicationFunctions.
- IGraphicsScaleController is nn::am::service::
IGraphicsScalingParametersFunctions (header renamed to match), and its
command 10 is GetGraphicsScalingParameters. Switchbrew leaves
IApplicationProxy 40 and 60 unnamed; they are named after the
interfaces they return (IPerformanceFunctions, this one).
Renames only, no behavior change. Covers the IHidServer entries the
Switch 2 work added as UnknownNNN (upstream Eden does not list them):
137-160, 311/312, 322-324, 550, 1005, the Jcms commands 3110-3113 and
the Nmouse commands 3130-3142.
213, 214 and 220 have handlers, so their functions are renamed too:
SendVibrationValueInMode, SendVibrationValuesInMode (was
SendNx2VibrationValues) and IsOunceVibrationDeviceMounted. 3114, 3134
and 3143-3149 are not on Switchbrew and keep their placeholder names.
SetGraphicsScaleChangedNotificationEnabled(bool) is called at boot by
every Switch 2 title in the 11-02/11-03 run logs (MKW included) and was
left to the auto stub. The graphics scale never changes here, so there
is never a change message to send: accepting the flag is the whole job.
MKW calls chat:u 3 and the chat session's 2 at boot; both were
auto-stubbed, so the title got no object and no event handle back.
Per Switchbrew (Switch 2: Chat services):
- chat:u 1 returns the same IUserShimScopedObject as 0.
- chat:u 2, 3 and 4 return IUserLayoutCustomizationShimScopedObject,
IVirtualCameraShimScopedObject and IUserSelectiveTalkShimScopedObject.
Nothing implements them yet, so each is an nx2 stub interface whose
commands succeed empty.
- The session's 2-4 (AttachToRoomInfoChangedEvent,
AttachToLocalCameraImageProcessingModeChangedEvent,
AttachToLocalCameraZoomMagnificationChangedEvent) take nothing and
return an event. None of these changes outside a GameChat room, so
each gets its own event that is never signalled.
Renames only, no behavior change. Switchbrew (Audio services) gives the
interface names of the Switch 2 audio services:
- aud:u is nn::audio::IUserClientSession (was INx2AudioUserClient).
- auddmg:u is nn::audio::devmgr::IUserSessionManager, and its command 0
returns nn::audio::devmgr::IUserSession (were
INx2AudioDeviceManagerService and INx2AudioVirtualDeviceManager).
- audsmx:u is nn::audio::sysmix::IUserSessionManager, returning
nn::audio::sysmix::IUserSession, whose command 1 returns
nn::audio::sysmix::IExternalStreamSession (were
INx2AudioSoundMixerService, INx2SysmixUserSession and
INx2SysmixStreamSession).
The devmgr and sysmix classes share names, so they live in Devmgr and
Sysmix namespaces. auddmg:u 0 is OpenUserSession like audsmx:u 0
(Switchbrew leaves both unnamed). The command IDs of every session
match Switchbrew's lists; command names stay (most come from SDK
symbols). Session name strings keep their nx2: prefix, which drives the
auto stub.
…RO_MAP
Renames only, no behavior change. Switchbrew (NV services) lists
0x8010410B as the Switch 2 ioctl NVGPU_AS_IOCTL_GET_SYNC_RO_MAP with the
fields base_gpuva, sync_size and num_syncpoints, so
Nx2GetSyncpointShimInfo / IoctlNx2SyncpointShimInfo {address, stride,
count} become GetSyncRoMap / IoctlGetSyncRoMap with those field names.
IApplicationFunctions 230 (Switchbrew: IsTensorRtSupported, Switch 2,
20.0.0+) was a zeroed stub, which told titles the console can't run
TensorRT networks. Switch 2 hardware can, and the DLSS network work
(#465) now handles what a title runs next, so answer true like the
console.
220 (Switchbrew: IsOunceVibrationDeviceMounted, Switch 2; a PID, a
VibrationDeviceHandle and an aruid in, a bool out) always answered 0,
so titles saw the Switch 2 vibration device as absent. It now reads the
handle and answers whether that device is mounted, the same way 211
does for Switch 1 devices. A handle the vibration code doesn't recognise
reads as not mounted rather than failing, as 214 already treats them.
- GetRoomInfo (11) writes the 0xF0-byte nn::chat::RoomInfo as all
zeroes, the console's answer outside a GameChat room (ChattingUid at
0x18 invalid). The auto stub left the title's buffer as it was.
- chat:u 2 returns a real IUserLayoutCustomizationShimScopedObject: its
command 1 hands back an event official software takes right after
Initialize, which the nx2 stub couldn't. The event never fires; the
layout never changes outside a room.
- The commands Switchbrew names but gives no layout for (local camera
image processing / zoom, screen sharing, realtime audio levels, the
audio stream work buffer and sharing key on chat:u; camera streaming
and audio stream recording on the session) are registered under those
names and answer 0, as the auto stub did.
Zeroed stubs answered the getters 0 whatever the title had set:
- 138/139 SetSceneIdForPrivateApp / GetSceneIdForPrivateApp (Switchbrew:
aruid and a u64 in; aruid in, u64 out) now store and return the id.
- InitializeNmouse (3130), InitializeNmouse2 (3139, MKW calls it) and
SetNmousePointerRanges (3132) take the pointer ranges (width, height);
GetNmousePointerRanges (3133) returns them instead of 0 x 0. No mouse
is ever attached, so the shared memory the title hands over is left
as it is.
Command 40 returned an nx2 stub, so IsCpuOverclockEnabled always read 0
even after SetCpuOverclockEnabled(true). IPerformanceFunctions (Switchbrew,
Switch 2) now keeps the title's request and reads it back, and also
reports enabled when Eden's CPU clock setting is Boost or Overclock.
The title's request doesn't change that setting: it scales the clock the
guest reads, which would jump under a running title.
IApplicationProxy 40 makes a new IPerformanceFunctions per call, so a
SetCpuOverclockEnabled(true) on one object read back as false through
the next. The request now lives on the Applet like the other
application settings (media playback state, game play recording), under
its lock.
Also drops the nx2_stub_interface.h include both Switch 2 AM interface
headers carried without using it.
- The scene id (138/139) and the Nmouse pointer ranges are kept per
applet resource user id, so another applet can't overwrite what the
application reads back.
- InitializeNmouse (3130) goes back to a placeholder: none of the 312
Switch 2 boots in the logs on this machine call it, so its Switchbrew
layout has no capture behind it. InitializeNmouse2 (3139, MKW) stays.
- SendVibrationValueInMode (213) is still dropped: two layouts fit its
32 bytes and no capture says which. It now logs its first request so
the next run of Kirby Air Riders, the only title seen sending it,
settles that. MKW rumbles through 214, which is forwarded.
IChatSession 1-4 and IUserLayoutCustomizationShimScopedObject 1 each
created their own never-signalled event. ServiceFrameworkBase already
hands out one lazily (StubReplyEvent), so the event members, their
cleanup and the per-command handlers go.
The changes add and wire Switch 2 application-management services, update audio service interfaces, expand friend and HID command handling, and rename the nvhost GPU syncpoint map ioctl contract and handler.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 36afa
A specially shaped vibration request can read beyond the command buffer. Guard that read before merging, or explicitly accept the bounded risk.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 36afa
A new diagnostic path reads guest-controlled requests without explicitly checking the remaining buffer capacity. This leaves a plausible host-memory exposure requiring resolution. Other inspected changes preserve existing ownership and driver layouts.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new command-213 diagnostic reads eight words from a descriptor-derived offset without checking the remaining command-buffer capacity. A near-end offset could copy adjacent host state into diagnostic output. The unchecked read is observed; admission of a triggering malformed request remains unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The unresolved diagnostic-read exposure is within a guest client's access to the HID service and the hosting emulator process. The inspected sink is host diagnostic output, not a demonstrated guest-readable response or remote endpoint. Exploitation also requires reaching the first invocation of the once-only diagnostic.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The concern is a guest-controlled descriptor layout influencing the payload offset, followed by command 213 copying and logging eight words without an extent check. The fixed buffer and unchecked copy establish the proof obligation, but a triggering malformed request was not verified end to end. Because the full guest command buffer is copied, a short declared payload by itself does not establish host-memory disclosure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new HID state handlers do not use arbitrary raw aruid values as their effective keys: ClientAppletResourceUserId aliases ClientProcessId, whose serializer takes ctx.GetPID(). With a PID descriptor, that value comes from the calling process. Without it, the context PID remains zero. The shared service lock serializes request handling, countering the suspected concurrent unordered-map access.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The new scene-ID and pointer-range maps live on the shared HID service. Setters replace the entry for an effective PID, and absent entries read as zero. The existing applet-resource cleanup does not erase these maps, so entries persist until service destruction. Caller-PID marshalling limits growth to effective process identities rather than arbitrary per-request keys; a material cross-application or resource-exhaustion impact was not established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Before diagnostic parsing, validate both the declared payload extent and the remaining backing-buffer capacity. Skip or reject malformed input rather than reading a fixed eight-word block. Separately, align the new HID maps with applet cleanup and explicitly define handling of requests that omit the PID descriptor.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Guard the names array index against unexpected commands.
OpenStubObject computes ctx.GetCommand() - 3 and uses the result as an index into a 2-element array. The command table maps only commands 3 and 4 to this handler, so the index is valid today. If someone maps this handler to another command later, the array access reads out of bounds. Add an ASSERT or a bounds check to catch that mistake early.
Proposed fix
- const char* name = names[ctx.GetCommand() - 3];+ const u32 index = ctx.GetCommand() - 3;+ ASSERT(index < names.size());+ const char* name = names[index];

Check the request size before logging command 213.
A short first request with many descriptors can place the payload near the end of the command buffer. The eight-word PopRaw can then read beyond the buffer. Skip the log unless both the declared payload and the command buffer contain eight words.

HintCold runs every 30 s on the Switch 2 texture pool backing. On Linux it
called madvise(MADV_PAGEOUT), which writes the pages to swap right away
while holding the mmap lock. A guest core's mprotect (the JIT) then waits
for that lock, and the whole emulator stops with it, audio included.
Ocarina of Time on an i5-10400 with swap on a SATA SSD: the emulator
stopped for 3-15 s every few minutes, with nx2:ColdHint in rq_qos_wait and
a CPUCore thread in mprotect, every guest core idle.
MADV_COLD only deactivates the pages, like VirtualUnlock on Windows, so the
kernel pages them out first when RAM is short, as a03e816 intended.
With it, no swap-outs and none of these stalls over about 30 minutes of
play; the hitches left were pipeline builds.
