Fast-forwards nx2-experimental (797461a8b6) and nx2 (74db237124) with the stability, visual, and performance work from nx2-fast-forward. All 70 merge conflicts against nx2-experimental are resolved and verified (410/411 unit tests passing).

Highlights

  • Stability & crash fixes:
    • Clear deleted BufferIds across all channels in BufferCache::DeleteBuffer (fixes VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST in multi-channel games).
    • Guard out-of-bounds TIC reads, zeroed texture descriptors, and unmapped GPU writes; reset state-tracker flags on channel release.
    • Eliminate data race on clip_distance_written across parallel shader compile workers.
  • Visual & CPU fixes:
    • Fix Dynarmic AVX-512CD EmitVectorCountLeadingZeros16 (CLZ Vd.8H) upper-lane corruption (vpmovdw instead of vpackusdw), fixing garbled JPEG save thumbnails in Ocarina of Time.
    • Keep frames_ahead and present_one_ahead OFF by default (eliminates screen flashes from guest buffer overwrites).
    • Make the 0.25x OoT volumetric fog scale strictly opt-in (EDEN_NX2_OOT_VISUAL_WORKAROUND=1), restoring volumetric fog and light shafts.
    • Ampere/Maxwell lowering and texture-cache fixes (64-bit TryFindBase delta, 7-bit ISBERD immediate, indexed AST, signed RED.E offsets, generalized bound SURED, 64 SSBO slots for graphics stages).
  • Shader stutter & frame pacing:
    • Enable async shader building by default on fresh configs; prebuild deferred disk-cache graphics pipelines on background threads (VkPipelinePrebuild).
    • Rebuild stale null-pointer compute pipelines asynchronously without WaitIdle on the GPU thread; prebuild distinct persisted pointer-mask variants at boot.
    • Per-frame shader build budget (shader_build_budget) and pending_wake on queue submit.
    • Built-in Ocarina of Time dynamic-FPS (nx2_oot_time.h) and full-resolution patches (toggleable in Properties -> Add-ons).
  • Runtime switches & docs:
    • All performance switches are gated in src/video_core/nx2_perf.h (EDEN_NX2_PERF_ON / EDEN_NX2_PERF_OFF / EDEN_NX2_PERF_OPT=0), with unsafe experiments locked off in DefaultOffMask() and always_off.
    • Documented in OOT_STATE.md, SHADER_STUTTER_NOTES.md, UPSTREAM_CANDIDATES.md, and CREDITS_OOT.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional Ocarina of Time patches, including a real-time frame-timing patch, manageable through Add-Ons.
    • Added a CPU setting to prefer 3D V-Cache cores on supported processors, and enabled asynchronous shaders by default.
    • Improved Vulkan rendering and pipeline handling, with support for compatible cooperative-matrix hardware.
  • Documentation
    • Added Ocarina of Time setup, testing, troubleshooting, and contribution guides, plus an issue-report template.
    • Updated Windows log and mod-folder paths to use the Eglantine folder.

With the skip, vi2 returns before the back has run this frame, and the
guest rewrites data (constants, exposure) that the back still reads for
it: only the pushbuffer is snapshotted at submit. The user saw incessant
brightness flashes on the 07:13 build that had it on.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (diagnosis and change)
…heck

The once-per-frame guest byte compare of native 64 KiB uniform banks was
gated on Nx2Perf::Enabled() only, so EDEN_NX2_PERF_SAFE/OFF could not
reach it. A CPU rewrite of a bank later in the frame is uploaded one frame
late, a candidate for the brightness flashes that persist under SAFE.

It is now Opt::BankOncePerFrame ("bank_once_per_frame"), on by default
(not in always_off: default behaviour is unchanged). It is in
DefaultOffMask, so EDEN_NX2_PERF_SAFE=1 turns it off: SAFE turns off
every non-legacy switch, and SAFE should rule this one out too. Off, every
bind on a new draw ticket compares the bank with the shadow (GPU-modified
banks still skipped).

Profiler counters: bank rechecks skipped by frame, bank late changes.
EDEN_NX2_PERF_VERIFY=1 (per-draw path, as before) logs pages that changed
after the frame's first bind, 64 lines then a count every 1024.

Assisted-by: Claude (implementation)
…bits

The bind memo hit only 13-16% of binds: a hit needed the global tracker
CPU and GPU epochs, the scheduler tick and the frame unchanged, and
unrelated writes (constant buffer words, fence invalidations, written
SSBO binds, downloads) move the epochs on almost every draw.

Under Nx2Perf::Opt::BindMemoLocal ("bind_memo_local", off by default and
in always_off until measured), a hit needs the same channel, buffer id,
address and size, an unchanged buffer_epoch (bumped only by CreateBuffer
and DeleteBuffer, so the id cannot name a reused slot), the same frame
(TouchBuffer's LRU stamp) and no CPU-modified bits in the range. With
none set, SynchronizeBuffer uploads and clears nothing whatever the GPU-
modified ranges hold: CachedCpuWrite (the only setter of CachedCPU bits)
has no caller, so Untracked bits equal CPU bits and the clear notifies
no page counts. A hit on a new scheduler tick still marks usage and
notes it for that tick; the storage path no longer needs a usage mark
for a hit. The memo is noted only when the range is clean at note time.
Written storage binds keep the full path. Vulkan commands and
descriptors are unchanged; only host bookkeeping is skipped.

Off, the epoch-based hit and note run unchanged. EDEN_NX2_PERF_VERIFY=1
runs the full path on every hit and logs "Nx2Perf bind_memo_local: ..."
for sync would upload, usage not marked, and buffer_epoch stale (the
page table names another buffer for the range). The GPU profile splits
misses by reason (key, buffer epoch, frame, dirty range) and counts hits
on a new tick.

Assisted-by: Claude (implementation)
landed_prev_always / one_ahead_landed (both off by default): the host
syncpoint value rises on the fencing thread after every fence queued
before it (downloads, query results, operations), so it means 'landed in
guest memory'. vi2's frames-ahead early return (N-1 recorded at entry)
and present_one_ahead's skipped wait then wait for N-1's landed value
before the reply. EDEN_NX2_PERF_VERIFY reports presents that returned
before N-1 landed. The 600-present line counts early returns before
landing and the time waited for it.

Assisted-by: Claude (implementation)
MSVC's std::deque allocates one heap block per element larger than 8 bytes,
so every queued constant buffer word, every non-merging noted write and
every draw epoch record cost an operator new on the split front, and
LastWriteTo walked the deque backwards block by block.

Nx2Perf split_rings (off by default) keeps them in preallocated
power-of-two rings instead: 4096 constant buffer words and 512 noted
writes in fixed arrays (both already capped there), draw epochs in a
vector ring that doubles when full. The std::deque path is unchanged when
the switch is off. With EDEN_NX2_PERF_VERIFY=1 both containers are kept,
every retire and query is compared, differences are logged as
"Nx2Perf split_rings:" (64 lines) and the deque answer is used.

Adds the "cb words noted" profile counter, runs the split write tracker
tests with the rings off, on and verified, and compares rings, trackers
and constant buffer word overlays against std::deque past their
capacities.

Assisted-by: Claude (implementation)
landed_prev_always / one_ahead_landed renumbered to 49/50 after bank_once_per_frame (48).

Assisted-by: Claude (integration)
split_rings renumbered to 51; profiler counters kept from both sides.

Assisted-by: Claude (integration)
bind_memo_local renumbered to 52.

Assisted-by: Claude (integration)
Logs "Nx2Frame: n= iv_p50/p90/p99/max fw_p50/p99/max" (ms) about once per
second of host time from the vi2 present path: guest present-to-present
interval and time blocked on the GPU fence. Fixed-size rings, no allocation
per present; EDEN_NX2_FRAME_STATS=0 turns it off. back_idle/front_wait are
omitted: gpu_split only times idle and waits under EDEN_NX2_GPU_PROFILE.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (implementation and unit test)
Nearest-rank p99 equals max for windows under 100 presents, which is
every window at 60 FPS or less. Add iv_n_over_20ms, a spike count that
pools across a run, and note the p99 caveat in the header.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (review fix, code and tests)
The lab's flash check (40 captures at the idle Kokiri spawn) finds 25-40%
of frames at another brightness with frames_ahead on, and none with it
off, everything else at the defaults. Running the guest a frame ahead lets
it rewrite data the back still reads for the previous frame, like
present_one_ahead. It costs ~5 ms per frame at the spawn spot;
EDEN_NX2_PERF_ON=frames_ahead brings it back.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (flash bisect and change)

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (integration)
EDEN_NX2_PERF_CONTROL=<path> starts an "Nx2PerfLive" thread that polls the
file every 100 ms (size/mtime) and applies the arm it describes (label,
on/off lists, safe) on top of the startup mask, for the live-safe switches
only. Every applied file is logged as one "Nx2PerfLive: set=..." line.
On() is now one relaxed atomic load and a bit test after its first call;
nothing changes when the variable is unset.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (implementation, call-site audit, unit tests)
bank_check, write_intersections and immediate_callbacks have no On()
call site, so a live flip only changed the mask bit and an A/B run
measured nothing without a warning. They now land in ignored=.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (review fix and unit test)
The --max-seconds watchdog and `stop` only ran an unchecked taskkill. Started
from a process whose console had gone away, the watchdog's taskkill never ran
and an orphaned eden-cli kept running minutes past its limit.

Kills now hold a process handle, run taskkill /T for the children in a hidden
console of their own, fall back to TerminateProcess and check that the process
is gone. A pid that was reused (creation time differs) is left alone. The
watchdog is a `watchdog` subcommand in its own hidden console, retrying, and
`stop` exits non-zero and keeps emulator.pid while the emulator still runs.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (implementation and tests of the console-free kill path)
Live nx2_perf switch control file (EDEN_NX2_PERF_CONTROL), 13 live-safe
switches, lab_ctl stops the emulator without a console.

run_oot.ps1 now refuses to report a result from a run that never left
the title screen (INVALID, exit 3: those windows read ~60 FPS), starts
python and lab_ctl through Process.Start with a hidden console so a
press or capture can no longer be skipped silently once the launching
console is gone (a failed launch or press ends the run with exit 6),
checks DEVICE_LOST in emulator.log and in this run's eden_log.txt,
notices an emulator that exited early, stops the emulator on Ctrl+C
and checks that it is gone (lab_ctl's watchdog covers a dead script),
keeps comma lists such as EDEN_NX2_PERF_ON=a,b intact, waits 45 s
before a stall dump (emulator.log grows in chunks), and records when
gameplay and the walk started in phases.txt. New -Stay (no walk) and
-Flash N (captures standing still, judged by the new flash_stats.py).

perf_summary.py takes a run dir, labels each 600-present window title,
loading, spawn or walk, sums the per-second Nx2Frame lines, prints FPS
per Nx2PerfLive label, lists the switches that are off, and has a
--self-test.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (port from the internal lab scripts, tests and README)
The flash fix (frames_ahead and present_one_ahead always off), its
~5 ms cost and today's numbers at the current lab save (~36 FPS at the
spawn spot, 43-45 after the walk; the older 51 was another save), the
Nx2Perf switch system with the live control file, Nx2Frame lines, the
unmeasured V-Cache pinning, and the migration dialog fix. Help wanted
lists today's open items; the credits add the commits since the stable
state and PastaLaPate; the test report form asks for environment
variables.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "nx2: fast-forward stability, visual, and shader-stutter fixes" matches the main thrust of the PR objectives. The objectives describe a merge of nx2-experimental and nx2 into nx2-fast-forward that covers crash and stability fixes, visual and CPU corrections, and shader compilation changes. The title names these categories without listing files. It is specific enough for a teammate scanning history. The changeset is very broad, so the title covers the main themes but not every area, such as the large performance-switch and GPU-split work. That breadth is expected for a title of this length.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 28.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 175 functions across 50 files. (221 skipped: 55 unsupported, 166 over the file limit.)

Review comments at @src/core/memory.cpp:
- Around line 663-666: Update the page-request handling that uses
armed_read_traps so a request containing an already-armed cached page increments
read_trap_generation, even when reactive flushing is disabled. Invalidate only
once per request, and preserve the existing behavior for uncached pages and
newly armed pages.

Review comments at @src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h:
- Around line 200-204: Update the quartet-mapping loop so a group extending a
previous pair is rejected when paired[group] is also true; mark result.valid
false and return result rather than assigning an unreserved register region.
Preserve the existing mapping behavior for valid pairs and unpaired groups.
- Around line 2517-2522: Update the backward scan keyed by index to detect
branches later in code whose targets fall in (cursor, index], and stop the scan
at that boundary so it cannot accept a stale offset definition across a loop
back edge. Decode branch destinations using the existing instruction and
relocation conventions, while preserving the current relocations-based stopping
behavior.

Review comments at @src/video_core/buffer_cache/buffer_cache_base.h:
- Around line 948-955: Update HandleRasterizerDownload so that, when read traps
are enabled, the cached read area covers only the pages disarmed for that read;
retain the full image-wide area for the GPU flush and preserve existing behavior
when read traps are disabled.

Review comments at @src/video_core/engines/kepler_compute.cpp:
- Around line 836-845: Update the cached rejection branch to match the exception
path for non-DLSS matrix-multiply programs: after the existing retry handling,
call FollowPhotoUpscale and return the result of UpscaleFromConstBuffers for
that case. Preserve the existing output_pass handling for other cached
rejections.
- Around line 858-864: Update the rejected_compute_programs cache lookup and
insertion around rejected_compute_programs[program] so a cached rejection is
reused only while the program’s code and mapping remain unchanged. Invalidate
the entry or key it by code identity; do not rely on g_nx2_code_epoch alone,
since failed translations may not advance it.

Review comments at @src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/fixed_pipeline_state.cpp:
- Around line 195-199: Update the `alpha_test_ref` calculation to preserve
comparisons against 8-bit alpha values while retaining one pipeline per 8-bit
step: keep references already on the 1/255 grid unchanged, and map off-grid
references to the midpoint of their grid interval. Preserve the existing
Never/Always handling.

Review comments at @src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_rasterizer.cpp:
- Around line 2994-2995: Update the indexed-draw calls to
UpdateAlphaToCoverageEnable and UpdateAlphaToOneEnable to pass the selected
pipeline, and update both helper signatures and declarations to accept it. Use
the provided pipeline when available; retain the CurrentGraphicsPipeline lookup
when it is null so DrawTexture preserves its existing behavior.

Review comments at @src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache.h:
- Line 3544: Update the page_filter.Mark call for image.cpu_addr so images with
stand-in CPU addresses are skipped, using the established stand-in-address
check; preserve marking for valid guest addresses.
- Around line 1832-1833: Update the refresh logic around image.flags and
modification_tick to preserve GpuModified for partial uploads; clear it only
when the refresh replaces the whole image. Keep the existing modification-tick
update behavior unchanged.
- Around line 1832-1833: Before clearing ImageFlagBits::GpuModified or advancing
modification_tick, preserve newer GPU-written alias data in the regions covered
by the alias so a full refresh cannot overwrite them with stale guest data.
Update the refresh flow around image.modification_tick to ensure
SynchronizeAliases still processes that newer alias data rather than skipping it
because the image was marked newest.

text and width.

Remove the top-level return statement.

Line 165 has a return outside a function. Biome reports a parse error. If the Workflow runner loads this file as an ES module, the file fails to load. A runner that wraps the script in a function body can accept it, but standard tooling cannot parse the file. Wrap the script body in an async function, or drop the return and export the result.

Review comment at @.agent/handoff/d13/oot-60fps-r7plus.js at line 165:
Make the script valid as an ES module by removing the top-level return in the
result construction and exposing the rounds and history through a
module-compatible result mechanism, preserving both values.

Fix the log path in the issue template.

The template tells users to attach %APPDATA%\eden\log\eden_log.txt. The data folder is now eglantine (EDEN_DIR is "eglantine"). The other docs in this PR use %APPDATA%\eglantine\log\eden_log.txt. Users who follow this template look in a folder that does not exist for this build.

Review comment at @.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/oot_test_report.yml at line 92:
Update the log path in the issue template’s drag-and-drop instruction to use the
`eglantine` data directory, matching `EDEN_DIR` and the other docs. Preserve the

Align the build and branch instructions with local-combined.

The same document says performance work "should start from local-combined". The build steps still check out stable/oot-playable-no-crash-2026-11-05. The PR flow tells contributors to branch from that stable branch and open the PR against it. OOT_STABLE.md says the stable branch still has the frames_ahead flash bug. Contributors who follow these steps measure against a build with known flashes. The README.md in this PR says to open PRs against nx2. State one target branch consistently.

This change brings back the TSC estimate that crashed Intel CPUs which report no crystal frequency.

The deleted guard (max_std_fn < 0x15) limited EstimateRDTSCFrequency() to CPUs without leaf 0x15. The deleted comment states that Intel CPUs which have the leaf but report no crystal frequency, such as Coffee Lake, "keep the OS clock", and that "an i5-9400F crashed at launch on the measured RDTSC clock."

On those CPUs, leaf 0x15 returns a nonzero ratio denominator and crystal_frequency == 0. Line 221 then computes tsc_frequency = 0. The new guard now calls the estimator. The estimate is about 2.9 GHz, which is above std::nano::den. As a result, g_wall_clock is built with invariant = true and uses the native RDTSC path again. Line 333 and the new inline JIT CNTPCT path also depend on that native path.

Restore the manufacturer restriction. Alternatively, confirm that the root cause of the earlier crash is fixed elsewhere.

Update the EstimateRDTSCFrequency guard so Intel CPUs that expose leaf 0x15 but
report zero TSC frequency do not enter the measured native RDTSC path; restore
the prior manufacturer/leaf restriction unless the earlier crash is demonstrably
fixed elsewhere. Preserve estimation for the other supported cases and the
existing clock-selection safeguards.

Do not tie Unsafe_IgnoreStandardFPCRValue to cpuopt_unsafe_reduce_fp_error.

The setting cpuopt_unsafe_ignore_standard_fpcr has its own UI entry: "Faster ASIMD instructions (32 bits only)", described as running "with incorrect rounding modes". After this change, a user who turns on "Faster FRSQRTE and FRECPE" also gets incorrect ASIMD rounding. Turning off the ASIMD setting no longer prevents that. Gate the flag on its own setting.

Run the photo-upscale stand-in again when the cached rejection short-circuits the dispatch.

The first rejection of a matrix-multiply program goes through the catch block. That block calls FollowPhotoUpscale() and then return UpscaleFromConstBuffers(); (Lines 874-875). After that, the program is in rejected_compute_programs, so later dispatches take the cached branch instead. The cached branch only calls UpscaleInsteadOfNativeProgram(), and only for the first two failures. It never calls FollowPhotoUpscale() or UpscaleFromConstBuffers().

The consequence follows from how the window works. Per the comment above FollowPhotoUpscale, the first rejected pass of each evaluation opens the dispatch window. Within that window, a pass that has both images in its constant buffers is replaced by a blit. With the cache in place, later photo-mode evaluations (Mario Kart World docked) never reopen the window. Rejected passes also no longer try the blit. The 3840x2160 image then stays empty after the first evaluation. Only the UI shows.

Keep the cached branch equivalent to the exception path for the non-DLSS matrix-multiply case.

Update the cached rejection branch to match the exception path for non-DLSS

Rounding the alpha test reference to the nearest 1/255 step changes test results for common references such as 0.5.

std::round(ref * 255) / 255 moves the reference onto a grid point. A reference of 0.5 lies between 127/255 and 128/255, and it now becomes 128/255. With GREATER, a texel with alpha 128/255 passed before this change. It now fails. Interpolated or float alpha values in (0.5, 128/255] also change result. Alpha test reference 0.5 is very common, so cutout edges shift by one alpha step in many titles.

You can keep one pipeline per 8-bit step and keep exact 8-bit results:

  • Keep a reference that is already on the grid.
  • Map any other reference to the midpoint of its grid interval.

Every 8-bit alpha value then compares the same way as against the original reference.

Use the selected pipeline for the alpha dynamic states.

During an indexed draw, the helpers look up the pipeline as non-indexed. With geometry consistency enabled, the second lookup can return null and disable an enabled alpha state. It can also clear a skipped-geometry entry for a different draw.

Pass the selected pipeline to both helpers. Keep the lookup for DrawTexture, which passes null.

Preserve GpuModified for partial refreshes.

A GPU-written sparse image can receive a CPU update in another tile. The partial refresh clears GpuModified but leaves the GPU-written tile unchanged. A later JoinImages can then skip copying that tile and delete the old image, losing its contents.

Keep the flag set for partial uploads. Clear it only when the refresh replaces the whole image.

Preserve newer alias data during refresh

If a CPU write touches an image outside a newer GPU-written alias, the full refresh can upload stale guest data over the alias-covered region. The new image tick then makes SynchronizeAliases skip that alias, so later rendering can use stale texture data. Preserve the newer alias data before treating the entire image as newest.

Skip page-filter marks for stand-in addresses.

A non-sparse image with a stand-in CPU address sets PageFilter::overflow. This permanently disables the texture filter, so later GPU writes take the texture-cache lock and call WriteMemory even for unmarked pages.

Suggested fix

-        page_filter.Mark(image.cpu_addr, image.guest_size_bytes);
+        if (image.cpu_addr < ~(1ULL << 40)) {
+            page_filter.Mark(image.cpu_addr, image.guest_size_bytes);
+        }

Update the page_filter.Mark call for image.cpu_addr so images with stand-in CPU
addresses are skipped, using the established stand-in-address check; preserve

With read traps enabled and fence downloads disabled, a texture read can cache an image-wide area that includes another armed buffer page. A later GPU write to that page does not rearm it or invalidate the cached area. A CPU read can then skip OnCPURead and return stale data.

In HandleRasterizerDownload, limit the cached area to the pages disarmed for the read when read traps are enabled. Keep the full area for the GPU flush.

Update HandleRasterizerDownload so that, when read traps are enabled, the cached
read area covers only the pages disarmed for that read; retain the full
image-wide area for the GPU flush and preserve existing behavior when read traps
are disabled.

Invalidate cached rejections when the program changes.

If a different compute program is uploaded or mapped at a rejected GPU address, the cached rejection can skip the new dispatch without translating it. The entry can persist for the session while diagnostics are inactive and the tensor mode stays the same.

Invalidate the rejection when its code or mapping changes, or key it by code identity. Do not rely on g_nx2_code_epoch alone: a failed translation may have no registered shader entry to advance the epoch.

Update the rejected_compute_programs cache lookup and insertion around
rejected_compute_programs[program] so a cached rejection is reused only while
the program’s code and mapping remain unchanged. Invalidate the entry or key it
by code identity; do not rely on g_nx2_code_epoch alone, since failed
translations may not advance it.
